Groom in ivory tux tacky....wha?!

Carmiel, on July 9, 2013 at 6:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 51

Is there any way this can be executed tastefully?? All ideas and suggestions welcome! Our wedding colors are ivory, moss green, and choc. brown. The only option I can come up with is putting the groom in brown, but he absolutely refuses to wear a brown tux ( I don't blame him lol). But, with our wedding about 30 days out there isn't much time for such a drastic change! I'm almost thinking fudge it and just roll with it...worse case we'll just look tacky, crap!

What are you flower colors? I think a classic black tux goes well with every color, and unless your girl's dresses are all brown, having them in black would be fine.

If brown is your biggest color, and your FH doesn't wanna go with the brown tux I suppose ivory is your only option...

I personally am a fan of ivory tuxes but I suggest if not a warehouse take him to a department store like a Macys and have him try on different color suits or just jackets to get a better idea. Maybe even a shade or 2 darker then ivory so its almost in the middle of ivory and brown, experiment with different shades of your colors.

My flowers will be ivory & soft pinks, with some greenery. I was thinking a black classic tux, but FH seems to think black is for funerals :-/

Sara-more like a tan or beige suit/tux? With that would it be okay for the groomsmen to still be in ivory? I think I'm liking that idea!

With the weather being so mild still in a month's time, have you considered brown trousers with an ivory shirt, and a waistcoat of brown and moss green? There is little time left to order such things, but if you live close enough to larger formalwear stores, you might find something suitable for your FH. He might not need a jacket at all if the temps are likely to be high enough for him and the groomsmen to withstand. Plus, they could wear light tee-shirts under the shirts in case they might feel chilled.

My H was in ivory... not sure who or why it's tacky, but I didn't care then and I care even less now. It wasn't a tux, he got dress pants and a matching vest from Dillard's, but still. We got married in December in FL, it was about 80 degrees, no way a tux would have worked.

Fiona-I do love that idea, and we do live in an area with a decent amount of formal wear stores. Any suggestion as to wear to start our search (store suggestions)?

Reenski-I never knew it was considered to be tacky until last week, and since then I've been freaking out! I remember your wedding pics, and they weren't tacky at!! Your DH's suit looked fine with your dress. But, there are many "rules" about weddings that I am unaware of as I can only think of 1 wedding I've been to in my adult life lol.

Not tacky at all , my FH and GM are wearing all white suit and shoes. Only thing that will be different is my FH suit will have a silver bling tie.

Boatbride-I never considered it to be tacky until hearing it recently, then further researching. But, it may be all in how it's executed :-/ I was just worried that after all my hard work and planning that we had broken some cardinal wedding "rule", and put the bride and groom in the same color lol!

White/Ivory isn't my personal favorite, but certainly not tacky! If done well can be pulled off in a very sleek manner! Also, I think tan would be a really nice option if you decide against ivory :]

Stephanie- I'm beginning to think it's all in how it's executed as well, but I'm not sure what an ivory tux would require in order to pull it off nicely. Any suggestions? Also, I'm definitely not against the tan/beige. I'm going to ask FH when he gets home how he'd feel about wearing an alternate color.

Totally don't see how it's tacky! FH will most likely be in white/Ivory he is very dark so black suits tend to blend in, I want him to pop Smiley smile

What about a tan tux? I think it will be fine with the chocolate brown and moss color theme. If you go with ivory, maybe he can wear a moss green vest and tie.

Linda-That was an excellent suggestion, and I am now considering tan. FH is currently going to wear the moss green vest and tie with the ivory tux. So, now I'm just hoping FH is willing to try on a tan tux.

Thanks Chrissy! I've also got some really good suggestions from the other brides. FH is going to go try on tan/beige tux and suit this weekend :-)

I’m not a huge fan of ivory/white tuxes but it’s by no means tacky. Everyone has a different preference do what you want to do. I do like the light brown/ dark brown look….and like everyone else said, if all fails black goes with everything.
