Hello everyone! So let's get the basics out of the way. I'm not casting judgement on a single person, just stating the facts. I have not had sex (or "messed around" ) and won't until we get married in four months (!!!!). I am 21 and going to the OBGYN for the first time today for a consult and exam....

Hello everyone!

So let's get the basics out of the way. I'm not casting judgement on a single person, just stating the facts. I have not had sex (or "messed around" ) and won't until we get married in four months (!!!!). I am 21 and going to the OBGYN for the first time today for a consult and exam. I am terrified. Not because of pain, just a bit embarrassed to have someone looking and touching me. I want to start birth control ASAP to regulate periods and be sure that I'm not on my period for our honeymoon.

What questions should I ask? About birth control, sex, anything! Nothing is TMI and won't be taken the wrong way. I'm not interested in "stretching" myself using toys or anything.

Thank y'all so much!!

1 hour until I leave!

Ask all the insanely outrageous questions that you can. They have heard and seen worse. Even if you feel it's a "stupid" question, ask it. you can never have too much information when it comes to your "girl"

Um where I come from(washington DC) and in the united states it is normal for women to go to a GYNO once they start menstruating, not when they start having intercourse, your OP makes it sound like OBGYNs are only for 'dirty girls' who have sex, which isnt the case. I started menstruating when I was 14, and didnt have sex until I was 19, so that was 5 years of GYN visits. Also, the tenser you are the more uncomfortable it is, so try and relax while youre there.

One of my good friends is an OB/GYN. She's seen everything and once while checking to see the position of a baby during labor, the little sucker reached down the cervix and squeezed her finger. So unless something squeezes your docs finger during your exam, nothing you will say will be too surprising. Also, I was told my uterus is tilted to the left and without missing a beat asked if that meant a baby bump would lean left if I got pregnant. After asking, I told my doctor they could laug at me because I realized how stupid that sounded.

A pee test is not just to test for pregnancy. Have you ever had a UTI? Pee test.

Just relax. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You could probably even ask for suggestions on how not to make it hurt, your first time.

Also, if you're going to use KY or any other type of product, PLEASE test it on your skin a couple days before, to be sure you're not allergic to it. One of my good friends got married in 2008. Both of them were virgins and they were beyond ecstatic to have sex on their wedding night. WELL, turns out she is allergic to an ingredient in KY and their wedding night wil never be forgotten and not in a good way either!

@Anisea: I live in the DC area and not ONCE have I ever heard that. I started my period at 8. Are you seriously suggesting I should have seen a GYN. Where do you get your medical information?

Every time I have to go, I always say to myself "I'm clean, and normal looking, so my appointment can't possibly be the worst they've seen." Especially on a college campus. For some reason, it makes me feel better. Especially since my last OBGYN was a man.

Just remember to relax & it won't hurt! Just take deep breaths & think of your wedding! It'll help distract you from feeling awkward!

A lot of people start going to the OBGYN before they start having sex! I was one of them. It's a little awkward at first but most doctors are very nice and make you feel as comfortable as possible. Let them know your concerns so they can be a little more "gentle." The exam down there takes, literally, maybe a minute. It's very quick.

I've always heard 18 or when you become sexually active.

I didn't go when I started menstruating. My first visit was like 5 years later.

The exams are usually very fast and clinical (not at all embarrassing.) And if your OBGYN knows its your first exam, they should be able to use a smaller speculum for your pelvic exam so it won't feel quite as weird.

I am sure I am too late or your appt...but I want to say, CONGRATULATIONS on choosing chastity until marriage. I admire those who make such a difficult choice. =)

As someone who felt like her doc knew her vagina, better than her lover did (Cancer...saw him so often)...I can tell you, it never gets to where it is 100% comfort zone...but yes, they see them daily. I prefer a female doctor to a male one. Though my cancer doc ROCKED and I will always be grateful I found him.

Consider that BC will most likely increase your breast size...especially in the initial starting months...and allow for room in your dress!

And I did not see you ask for advice on the marital sex, but...LUBE. You really should not have pain, unless he is Long Dong Silver...if you have proper lubrication. Nerves can hurt the natural lube process...so put some in your overnight bag! =)

Hi Hannah! How did it go? Did you get started on birth control? Kudos for saving yourself for marriage. I wish I could've done that but I have no self control.

Just remember, these MD's see vaginas ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. It's nothing new for them. You could like have a unicorn eating jolly ranchers down there and they wouldn't think twice. Especially since you've never done anything, you have no STD's and probably a nice, healthy va-jay-jay (yes, I'm complimenting your lady bits, no need to thank me, you're welcome!)

As a nurse I've seen more vagina's and penis' than I'd care to think about, and everyone is always nervous. But remember, he/she is a professional and they know what they're doing and looking at.

Remember to take your pill every day around the same time - give you're a window like 8p-10p if when you take it (if that's the route you went). Set an alarm if you need to (tons of apps for pill reminders). Good luck!

Also, sex may hurt the first time. And the first few times. It did for me. I would recommend packing lube (this is my personal fave http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U0L4NW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000U0L4NW&linkCode=as2&tag=ask06d-20) just in case you get nervous, don't get as wet as you make think, he's super big, etc. It's compatible with condoms or no condoms. Lube always makes sex better. But not too much. Just a drop or two. Add more if you need. Too much and it'll be a slip 'n slide. Avoid OIL BASED lubes - greasy and staining.

Make sure to avoid a UTI, pee almost immediately after sex. If you don't, you can get bad UTI's. I would pack some cranberry pills and Azo as well JUST in case. Lube can also cause irritation so I would just try to touch yourself with it before you go and make sure you aren't allergic (that would be terrible on your honeymoon!). Try experimenting with yourself and get comfortable with that.

Yeah you don't need to go once you are menstruating. Some do that as early as the age of 8 (some younger). The rule of thumb through my doc and past obs has been 18 or sexually active which ever comes first.

If I remember correctly, they are now suggesting that girls go see an OB/Gyn as soon as they are old enough to consider Gardasil? (This stuff came out after my girls were already too old to receive...so memory is not fresh on it)

But yeah, the general consensus is, 18 or sexually active...whichever comes first.
