Going to the OBGYN for the first time as a virgin in an HOUR! Help!!

Hannah, on January 22, 2014 at 3:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 67

Hello everyone!

So let's get the basics out of the way. I'm not casting judgement on a single person, just stating the facts. I have not had sex (or "messed around" ) and won't until we get married in four months (!!!!). I am 21 and going to the OBGYN for the first time today for a consult and exam. I am terrified. Not because of pain, just a bit embarrassed to have someone looking and touching me. I want to start birth control ASAP to regulate periods and be sure that I'm not on my period for our honeymoon.

What questions should I ask? About birth control, sex, anything! Nothing is TMI and won't be taken the wrong way. I'm not interested in "stretching" myself using toys or anything.

Thank y'all so much!!

1 hour until I leave!

You will do fine. The Dr.'s see plenty of (areas) everyday. Let them know it's your first time and to go over all the options. Everyone is different.

FYI: the first time you "do it" will probably be painful, mainly because you've never done it before.

    Good luck!

The dr will do an exam and a breast exam. They'll discuss bc and what benefits you want. Personally I LOVE the patch and will never go back to the pill, but everyone is different. I've tried several pills and they all have diff side effects so if you go that route be prepared to try a few. Don't be uncomfortable, the dr has probably done 20 other exams today and has seen it all before. It'll be a 2 minute exam and you'll be happy to have it over with.

Doctors are professionals, so just keep that in mind. Don't let your nerves get the best of you. It can be as simple as telling them you want to be on BC. He/she'll probably give you a trial pack of something today and will ask you to make an appt for an exam and get a prescription for a full year. Give them a heads up that you're going on your honeymoon in a few months and see what they recommend. Good luck!

Birth control......maybe ask your doc for one that has 4 sugar pills so your periods are shorter? that's the only question I can think of lol

    good luck!

Ohhh man. i think you have a weird idea about what the appointment is going to be about. the doctor will ask you questions, probably do a breast exam with his/her hands and then do a pelvic exam. then the doc will take a look inside you to check for cysts and to make sure everything looks okay. it won't take long - the worst part is usually that the thing they put inside you is usually COLD!

Yea it can be awkward, but just remember that they do it alllll the time. You probably can't even THINK of a question that they haven't been asked before. It will be just a few minutes and you'll be done before you know it!

Don't be embarrassed we all go through it at one point or another! Honestly, I am 29 now and it barely phases me. I would just talk about your goals for birth control so he can prescribe the best type for you! Just relax, everything is worse when you tense up. Good luck!

Definitely be honest with the doctor about what you've done (or in your case haven't) & they will modify accordingly. Also, if your doctor is a male you are entitled to have a female in the room with you as well.

Try to relax and things will be a lot easier. If it makes you more comfortable, have your doctor explain what he or she is doing as he/she does it.

Also, don't be embarrassed because they've seen thousands of lady parts before. Good luck, you'll be fine.

He sees a million potatoes a day, so don't feel embarrassed or anything.

He'll feel your stomach and if you're scheduled for a pap test then you'll be on your back , feet in stirrups while he pokes around and asks you if anything hurts or tells you " Now you might feel a little pressure"

Ask him what birth control is best to keep track of your period and what the side effects are.

Rachel has a good point too but pills affect everyone differently so a dr really can't tell you if you'll gain weight or get acne. Of all the pills I've tried I loves lo-Estrin 24 the most but the patch is just so much easier to use.

Your doctor is a professional so any exams should be done professionally. It might be awkward to have someone look at you that way and such but a few minutes of weirdness is for the best. I would mention to them that you are a virgin as that might change their exam and what things they test you for (ie: no need for STD checks!).

I would ask about potential side effects of any birth control and see if you can do some research on the different types. I know I went on the mini pill because my family's medical history, they didn't want me taking the normal pill. I love it but it wouldn't be for everyone. Ask about the different types of birth control, what kinds are less work, and the most effective. If you have issues with your period, discuss that with them too as it might change what birth control they give you. Ask how the BC might affect your periods too. As for sex... I feel like as long as you know how to be safe and what sex generally entails, then it's easy to figure out! Cont.

If you really feel uncomfortable seeing an OBGYN then maybe just go see your general practitioner if BC is all you are wanting. That will avoid all the physical exams. They are still knowledgeable about BC and can still help you. This is what I do.

One vagina, two vagina, three vagina, four...

Just remember he or she has seen it all. Ask him or her all the questions you need to. You're also going to get a breast exam, FYI.

Just a lot of research (hint hint!). Once you guys start having sex, maybe look up some different positions and try some out as that can really change what you feel and how good it is. Don't expect it to be great right away as it might take more work for some girls to orgasm and so don't be worried if it doesn't happen the first (or second, or third) time. Just keep at it and explore so you learn the things that you enjoy and don't. Then it will be great!

Good for you for going! You should start going at 18 regardless of sexual activity. So good job for not waiting too much longer. The worst part is the waiting. The nurse brings you back and tells you to get undressed and you feel like you are sitting there in a sheet and your socks for an hour. It's really like 20 minutes. Those rooms are cold. I wore my jacket until my doctor came in last time. Haha, that was a sight! Bring your phone or puzzles or something to keep you entertained.

The pain is not bad. It's more of a discomfort than pain. The actual exam will take like three minutes. The will ask you to pee in a cup before they take you back to the exam room. Everything is very sanitary for your protection and the protection of others.

Yes, every girl should start going when they hit 18!

I get examined every year. It's not the most pleasant thing in the world, but it's really not so bad. You have to remember that they look at dozens of 'em a day. Smiley smile

The only thing you really don't want to do is wax the day of, or even a couple days before. You'll be a little inflamed and that makes a visual inspection harder.

@gamecox she might not even have to pee in a cup if she's a virgin!
