Going into debt for wedding/reception.. what did you do?

Lindsey M., on September 1, 2018 at 3:29 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21
Hi everyone! Our wedding reception isn’t fancy by ANY means, but it’s still been expensive! We are only 2 weeks away and realized we are about 50 people over budget. Therefore we have to spend a bit more on extra tables, dinnnerware, snacks, etc. I decided to open up a credit card and go into debt by about $350, and it was honestly one of my best decisions. I was so stressed and honestly unsure if the funds would even be there in time to get everything, and it’s almost here... now we are about 90% done with gathering everything and preparing it all, and I can honestly say going into a little debt made me finally get excited for this thing!! Woohoo!

It was a store card through amazon and we financed it for 6 months interest free. Not too much damage & I’m young and need to build credit anyways. I think it worked in our favor!

Did you go into debt for your wedding? Was it a lot or a little? Any horror stories or small victories like me? I don’t know what the “norm” is so I’d love to hear your experiences!

Hope y’all are having a blessed weekend ❤️

I’m definitely thinking we might need to put some of our expenses on a credit card too. The nice thing about using credit is that you still have a month+ to pay it off without it hurting your credit!!

Congratulations btw!! 2 weeks is so exciting!!

I’m doing my absolute best not to go into debt for the wedding. I just finished digging myself out of $10,000 in credit card debt and I saved up about $11,000 for the wedding. Our guest list is about 50 more than we planned so if everyone rsvps we may end up putting some on a credit card but we are both picking up extra hours to avoid it if possible! I’m glad it worked out for you, paying off $350 should be doable in 6 months and interest free is AWESOME!

We didn’t necessarily go into debt, but got a travel credit card to earn money back on all our wedding expenses. So far we’ve put everything on the card and then pay it off every month, but it has been so nice not to worry about “what if’s” and just put everything on the card. Plus it’s 12 months no interest which is an added bonus!

I think we are going to use a credit card for some of our remaining balance as well.. we don’t really have too but we found one for 12 months no interest and you get travel points so we may do it and then just pay it off fast

I dont recommend people going into debt for your wedding, but if you do need an emergency credit card, dont just get one from your bank. There are 0% cards that give you up to 18 months to pay off before the accumulate interest. The interest is crazy high of you dont pay it off though. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.nerdwallet.com/best/credit-cards/low-interest&ved=2ahukewj1pzwhzprdahwi24mkhy-cb3oqfjaaegqiahab&usg=aovvaw0tkr2jpttxfqcfbixyt-vu

I’ve paid for everything on my credit card for the points but then pay the card off right away. Also because I wanted to protection my card gives in case there is an unfortunate incident with a vendor. But no, we are very on budget and I’m OCD about our finances so I planned for a little wiggle room and so far we haven’t needed that.

Congratulations on being just 2 weeks away!

You will be fine and should be able to pay off the $350 before the 6 months, even if you only paid $60 each month ($360)

We kept everything pretty simple and paid for everything in cash. My hubby hates credit cards! We skipped favors, all paper products, photobooths, none of that. Excellent food and drink, a live musician and a beautiful setting plus a photographer were our biggest expenses.

We saved up each month - no horror stories, sorry!!! Smiley ring

We got a credit card that allowed us to earn points that we can cash in for our honeymoon! That way we are saving some money on the stuff we are already buying for the wedding!

Since we are doing fixes around the house and decided on a six month engagement, we took out a personal loan. I put a third of it in savings for any cash deposits necessary for the wedding, and used credit cards for everything. Honestly- we have not really gotten in financial trouble. We’ve cut back on expenses (eating out, movies, etc) majorly so I think that is helping us balance out.

We earn cash back on our credit card so we put all purchases on the card but pay it off each month. We aren’t going to spend any money we don’t have for the wedding though

We had a little bit of help with our wedding, but all of it was a paid back loan. We did not go into debt for the wedding, though we do owe on a personal loan for the honeymoon. We just kept things simple and did a little here and a little there over a 5 month period, and planned our big expenses for when we didn't have big bills.

Paying everything in cash, even our honeymoon. Starting our married life on a beach not in debt.

We are doing almost the same! We paid off the honeymoon & it’s all inclusive so that’s so nice. However, we already have student debt and car payments, so I guess we’re in debt no matter what. 😂

I am 2 weeks away from my wedding I'm over about 30 people as well. We are paying everything in cash but I feel is all worth it. Is hard to stay in budget when you want the wedding of your dreams. Good luck! 😊

Using a credit card with excellent rewards for everything but luckily not going into debt. We actually use the card, or other cards depending on category bonuses, for everything in general except rent and electric that we have to pay by check and eft. Using rewards to pay for hotels for the honeymoon and splurging and getting way nicer rooms than I normally would lol. I think we got around $2500 in hotels for $1500 in points. I love rewards. I get annoyed when I can't use my card with a vendor because I try to keep all my cash in online savings so I can get 1.85% interest, so if they require a big deposit and don't take a card they have to wait 2-3 business days while I transfer before I'll write a check lol. It may not sound like much but I'm getting like $25 a month in interest now that I'm closer to the wedding, every bit helps!

We waited a very long time to have a wedding because we wanted to be able to pay cash for it. We have other debt to worry about and didn't want to add to it. So far we've been pretty successful.
