First dance song - Ed Sheeran

Amy, on December 26, 2017 at 11:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

So the new Ed Sheeran song "Perfect" - I love it, FH loves it but when I really listened to it the lyrics sounds like a song about a young couple that broke up and got back together... me and FH have been together since we were 20 and have always been together (7 years). Am I overthinking it? Its a really lovely song and I can see myself dancing with him to it but I want everything to be perfect and I tend to get in my own head.

Honestly, I don't think people will be listening that closely to the lyrics. It's a pretty song (I'll probably have my BP walk down the aisle to the version he does with Beyonce). If you really like it, just go for it! I'm probably doing Boyce Avenue's version of "Say You Won't Let Go" by James Arthur and there are some odd lyrics in that one too, but I like it so I'm going for it.

If you and your FH love it, than it’s the song for you! I think it’s s great song, as well. If we’re beimg honest, everyone is going to focus on you two enwraped by the love, that they won’t really even be paying attention to the song. Don’t think too much into it. No one else will really care or remember Long-term what song you two chose for your first dance. As long as the both of you love it, that’s all that matters! Cogratulations and best of luck to you.

I think it's a great first dance song. I wish my FH agreed. He doesn't like to like anything mainstream or popular. I think you're over thinking it.

I have the same feelings about the song, but I doubt anyone is going to listen that closely to the lyrics.

Also, I read on Spotify that he wrote the song for his current girlfriend, they met in high school but didn’t start dating until years later. That’s how FH and I started dating except FH didn’t know I was in love with him, we never talked 😂 so I think it’s a nice song for us.

Literally no one will be listening and interpreting the lyrics that closely - and even if someone does your first dance song does not need to be a literal interpretation of your relationship.

Pick a song you both like that is a good slow song and just go with it. No one will care about the lyrics that much.

If you both love the song and want to use it for your first dance, use it!

No one is going to take apart the song lyric by lyric to see if it fits what they know about your relationship perfectly.

UO, I listen to the lyrics. EVERYONE says “omg this fits our relationship so perfectly!” about this song, but it clearly says “we were just kids when we fell in love” and “I will not give you up this time.” I tend to see it as a song for people who started dating in like high school, broke up, and rekindled the relationship later. Obviously you can use whatever song you want, but if you’re second guessing it, maybe that’s your answer.

I don't think Perfect is a wedding song, just in my opinion. I have been to three weddings in the last month and every single couple used this song, so overused. It's def up to you, but if you have any hesitation why not find another song?

We're using it because everything in the lyrics for us. We were best friends all through high school and tried to date right after but we were both too young and didn't understand what we wanted. We got together a year later and haven't looked back. So "we were just kids when we fell in love" is accurate because we were in love in high school and the "I will not give you up this time" because of the year apart. Also as an added bonus I'll going to be barefoot for our wedding.

I kind of hate the popularity of it and I'm not a huge ed sheran fan but the lyrics are so spot on that we're using it. If the lyrics are something that's going to bother you every time you hear it then pick something else but if you can get past it then go with what will make you happy.

We loved it too we ultimately decided on thinking out loud for the same reason. Suited us better better anyway since it was the first song i dedicated to him and the lyric of

"And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23" was perfect since i met him at 23 Smiley smile

That's our first dance song, not all the lyrics apply but there are a lot that do. It's really what you and FH love.

I think the bigger reason not to use it is that it’s going to be every couple’s first dance song for the next 18 months. It’s this year’s All of Me or Thinking Out Loud.

I like that song, never thought that about the lyrics that closely. I just remember the "you look perfect" part
