Fiance wants best friends to stay here during wedding week

Must Love Cats, on June 1, 2016 at 2:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 45

Fiance is in Canada. I'm in NY. I have my own home. It's small but very comfortable for me and typically one other person. 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. His best friend and his girlfriend live in Vancouver. If they fly from Vancouver to Buffalo they will not have enough money for a hotel. I initially did not want anybody here at my house during wedding week but I understand if this is who he wants as a best man I might need to be a little lenient. However I do expect his friends to help pay for the groceries since those are two extra mouths to feed that I will not be able to accommodate. My concern is how long I should let them stay here. My household will be disrupted. Fiance wants them to stay before the wedding, the wedding night and for a few days during our honeymoon week. I'm already very uncomfortable that they would be here our wedding night. I feel that I should give them a 4 day max. Yes they are his best friends but we would have just gotten married. I want alone time with him.

It's going to be very stressful for the two of you hosting guests at this time. I know money is tight but I think you'll be better off pooling money and getting them a hotel room or Air BnB. Did you get a hotel block? If you have other out of town guests it might be worth it and hotels usually do discounted rates for rooms.

Personally, I would offer to pay for a hotel instead (even if it meant cutting a bit from the budget to do it). The week of the wedding is stressful and having extra people around isn't something you want unless you're 100% comfortable and even then I personally would advise against. And on your wedding night? Hell no.

I have not done the hotel block yet I was actually waiting until October to call this hotel I had in mind because I actually found out that it's hard to do that so far out so I figure in October I should be able to find out what's available October 2017. I truly don't even think we would be able to help put money towards a hotel for them because my fiance typically does not spend money even down in the United States due to the currency rates so it would all fall on me. A typical hotel for two people here is generally $120-$130 a night which is something I do not have. I actually talked to one of my best friends about this because she was in a similar position. Her fiance's best friend was in California they were here in Buffalo they had to chip in money to help fly him out here and they actually housed him for 3-4 days before/after wedding. She said that it was fine in her case because her fiancé hadn't seen his best friend in so long and she never met the guy so it was nice for them. My fiance and his best friend they had a YouTube channel and they like to film stuff. He mentioned to me tonight that they would like to film something with his friend while he's here and I was a little uncomfortable with filming in my house. I also know that takes at least a couple days and that's not exactly how I want to spend post-wedding days with him. I told him that just because his friends come to town that doesn't mean I want to be put on the back burner or our wedding becomes a second option when it is the first option because that's even why everybody came. I don't want them here the majority of our honeymoon week. We don't have enough money to go anywhere we're just going to enjoy his time here in my home before he has to return to Canada. I also have 2 cats that are very shy and have medical issues. The one still is even getting used to my fiance. He doesn't like men for some reason. He even runs and hide from my father. I also don't want to stress them out because the one also has asthma and breaks out every now and then. They would not be comfortable with having two other people in their household too. I'm not trying to sound inconsiderate or selfish but I think I'm being very kind to even open up my home for his friends but as I said my house is very small. When I had a friend visit me even for 9 days it proved to be very tiring and I couldn't wait till she left. Plus she took advantage of me which is why I'm kind of tainted with allowing anybody to stay in this house. And that's why I require anybody who wants to stay here has to contribute to groceries. It was hard with the three of us in this house because he was visiting for my birthday weekend when she was here. His friends wouldn't have access to a car so we would have to be the ones that pick them up from the airport bring them back here, he would most likely have to bring them to the wedding, and then we'd have to bring them back to the airport. I'm definitely in a tough spot because he wants them to be here for the wedding but they would have no where to stay if I wouldn't open up my home to them, but I just don't want them here as long as he would like them to be here. I'm a bit OCD and not to mention how it will raise electricity and water bills with 4 people under one roof.

It's definitely not too early to get a hotel block - we booked ours right after our venue 13.5 months out and the hotel manager seemed appreciative that we did it so early. And they usually discount the rooms rates, too.

Really? Okay I guess I'll try contacting them again. Ours is 16 months out and I was having trouble getting rates.

Get them an Airbnb if it's possible. It has nothing to who pays for the hotel room as you will be married and his money will end up being yours vice versa.

I'm planning on having one of my best friends stay with me 2 nights before the wedding but the night before and wedding night she is staying at a hotel. I think having people at your house the week before and during the wedding is too much. Maybe they could stay with you, get a room for a few nights then go back to your house when your gone for your honeymoon. Also don't charge them for groceries. I would be extremely offended if I was staying with someone and they demanded that.

That would be a big fat no for me. Everyone will be more comfortable if they are at a hotel. Personally I don't like to stay with or share a bathroom with people I don't know well. They will still be able to hang out and see each other without him staying there. Someone needs to find it in the budget to get them a hotel.

Have the friends stay at our FH's place in Canada and use his car. And they have a year plus, surely they can save some money by then. Have them drive from Vancouver to Seattle then fly on jet blue to buffalo .

Why is you FH going back to Canada after the honeymoon?

You and FH need to get on the same page. Filming YT videos with his friends days after getting married? Why is he even going back to Canada? If they're his friends, why isn't he putting out the money to help pay for them? Or he should at least contribute to something to offset the cost?

There are other things that concern me than just the friends staying at your home - which would be a big fat "no" for me. A hotel for them would go on a credit card so freaking fast because it's just not worth the stress. But I suggest you and FH have a long discussion because it sounds like you've already made up your mind and he might have different plans than you. Besides, this is over a year away??? These friends can't save for a hotel? Good luck!

I think you and your FH need to get on the same page about a lot of things. Why is he eve going back to Canada? You and your FH shouldn't be required to financially help his friend out. They have 15 months to figure something out and save, I think that's plenty of time and if that means cutting their trip short because they can't afford to stay longer, then that's what it means. This is how you adult. You and your FH are not financially responsible for his friends.

A hotel on the Canadian side will be expensive as that is our Thanksgiving weekend and the last "weekend" of the falls.

To save money on flights, have them look at flying Seattle to buffalo. Even with the ferry added on it can be cheaper. We did that 3 years ago the other way to attend fbil wedding in Victoria.

As for them staying with you, they have a year to budget and save. They can book a room at Residence Inn where they have a kitchenette. The rates are reasonable for longer bookings.

Airbnb has options in Buffalo that are far less than standard hotel rates. Something to consider..

Maybe you could try to help them connect with someone else (maybe someone else in the wedding party) and they could split the cost of an airbnb? You could even contribute a bit, if needed.

Your wedding is a year away... Way over a year. It's too soon to say they can't afford a hotel.

I think a day or two before the wedding would be ok. Put them to work helping with last minute things. But they have like a year and half to plan accordingly, if they put aside a couple bucks a week they can get a hotel.
