Extremely uncomfortable wedding

It sucked.

The vibe was so bad. During the cocktail hour, while the bride and groom were taking pictures, people went from subtly bitchy ("Nice dress she had on. Bet it was expensive") to outright angry ("This is just wrong, right? Everyone agrees this is wrong?") in record time. By the time the couple showed up, everyone was pretty obviously in a pissy mood.

We ordered. One woman loudly asked her partner if he had brought enough money for her to get the scallops. At one point, the bride urged a guest to get more wine and she just flat out said, "I can't. I didn't bring enough cash."

A local TV Station should have been called to put this on the 11 o'clock news. Worst couple ever!

First off reading this was painful. I couldn't imagine being a guest at this wedding and I echo what several people said Delfina you're a lot better person than I. I would have broke down in tears and I could tell people were that miserable at my wedding reception.

Anyone else secretly hoping the 21 year who was all for pot luck and having guest contribute to their day reads this and realize how horrible it is to make your guest pay or work on your wedding day?!

Wow! This sounds like a train wreck. You are better than I am. I would have returned the gift and not gone instead opting for a date night with FH. I just can't even wrap my head around how they thought this was ok and that not one person involved said "hey this isn't a good idea". I mean I always planned on having an open bar but everytime I talk to mom about wedding she is like "you are going to have an open bar right?". I don't know how anyone didn't say this isn't ok through the whole process. Hopefully they try to make it up to their guests later.

The whole time I read that I just felt all sorts of badness and secondhand embarrassment. Can't imagine having been there

And this is the full bloom of entitlement. How could any adult even consider such a hideously hosted affair? How could they add insult to injury by passing a jar for "contributions". It's a shame, an embarrassment, and the prototype for greedy, princess for a day, foolish, cheap, gift grabbing weddings. I hope the couple were duly humiliated. They asked to be humiliated, and they don't deserve to be let off the hook. They obviously underestimated the intelligence and class of their guests -- none of whom they could afford to host (something they realized, but chose to ignore so that they could have their 30 minutes of pageantry). This post literally turned my stomach. This type of non-reception encompasses all of the "it's my day", "stay home if you don't like it", "this is a celebration of our love, and nothing else", "people who love us and want to share in our love will show up no matter what -- or if -- we serve them", "I got my Disney gown, and that's all that matters", and "I still deserve a bachelorette party because I'm the bride" rhetoric.

I have no sympathy -- not an ounce -- for a couple who scammed their wedding guests. How dare they? Honestly, how dare they? May their wedding be talked about for decades to come. They earned that distinction.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. How would someone even be okay with their reception gojng that horribly? I'm sure they realized it was that bad. But I think I'm more shocked they made everyone pay for their own mean AND passed around a jar for donations. What in the actual fuck?!
