Looking for suggestions on etiquette for how to throw my own bridal shower, possibly slash housewarming party. Short story: 3 years ago I was engaged to someone else and canceled my wedding. It all happened the same weekend as my shower. So my bridesmaids threw me a beautiful shower and I returned all the presents the next day. Fast forward to now, I’m engaged to someone new and do not want to burden my bridesmaids with throwing me a shower again. Although, being that I gave all the gifts back last time, would like to have another shower. All my friends and family know what happened, so I don’t think anyone is judging me but I still feel very awkward about it all. I was also debating on somehow incorporating it as a housewarming party, to not make it look like I’m just throwing my own shower. My fiancé and I already bought a house so thinking it could be a twofer. Any suggestions?

    1) post wedding depression can be a real thing, just like depression can happen at any time. However, the people here aren't dealing with depression just because they told you that your awful idea was well...awful. Coming from someone that actually does struggle with depression it pisses me off that you would even put those in the same category.

    2) so if avatars reflect a person are you a house? Because that's what it looks like.

    3) you're going to get witty comments since there are witty people here on WW.

To elphaba what isn't a cg violation in your eyes? Seems you personally singled yourself out and chose to take offense. Well, at least I haven't resorted to using profanity.

People can use profanities here if they want to. Read the New User Sticky like you're supposed to and you'll know what the fucking CGs are.

Well, I'm happy you chose to reflect the way you were raised.

I was raised to not be gift grabby, and to be honest. I actually had a great upbringing, and anyone that truly knows me knows that I was raised just fine Smiley winking I wouldn't expect you to know that though since you know absolutely nothing about me. Nice try.

Don't be calling anyone out on how they were raised as we are trying to impart onto you a little class so people don't talk about how greedy you are to throw your own shower.

But what do I know? I'm a depressed married.

I'm pretty sure no one here planned a birthday party or wedding for "themselves."

I didn't judge you personally because I don't know you. However, I will judge your ideas. The idea to throw your own shower sucks, and is gift grabby so yeah I'll judge that for sure.

Oddly enough, I don't give a single fuck if you use profanity.

I actually haven't ever thrown a birthday party for myself. People throw one for me if they want to, but I don't throw one.

Also, the ceremony is for us, but I'm throwing the reception as a thank you to my guests for coming. Not for "myself" or it would be just FH and I. So that is the first correct comment I've seen from you. Good job!

No one here planned a party for themselves EXPECTING GIFTS. For fuckity fuck fuck's sake, get a grip. Your IDEA will come off as rude and gift-grabby and the kind folks here are trying to save you from a shitstorm of side-eye from your guests. Accept the advice or not, makes no difference to me or anyone else here. But to refuse the advice, state that only a few of us offered advice (read: validation of a bad idea), and then make comments about "reflecting the way we were raised"? Why, because we use the entire English vocabulary, not just the words that you like and approve of? That is beyond rude, seeing as how you know exactly NONE of us in real life.

Wait, can we go back to Helena's idea? It's been a rough couple months and a liquor store registry sounds like just the ticket.

Can you register there and not tell anyone about it? So then you aren't expecting gifts because people can't get it for you but you can just use the completion discount?

But but but. I would let my guests see me open and enjoy their gifts they have given me. After all I want to have a party. I deserve a party. I can't ask my friends to throw the party for me.
