I don't think engagement parties are necessary at all,they are nice to have but definitely not necessary.to me it's just an extra expense.

Absolutely a nice to have and not at all required. We used it as a way to celebrate with family that wouldn’t/couldn’t travel to the wedding in another state. Definitely fun, but also a bit of added cost and work.
