Dress Fittings: How soon and how many?

My first fitting was two months out. I had a total of three. I think it really depends on the person doing the alterations. Some require more time based on their load and/or manpower.

My boutique suggested one fitting about 6 weeks out, and a final fitting two weeks before the wedding.

I really do think it depends on the person.

I had a fitting also about 6 weeks before. It was supposed to be only minor alterations. Unfortunately, the alterations person was more incompetent so it took quite a few fittings to get it wrong in the end. Are you having alterations done in the salon or did you shop around?

My first alterations appointment is actually about 4.5 months before my wedding. But that's mostly because my dress is in a different state and I have to schedule fittings around when I'm there. Plus, I haven't lost or gained more than 5 lbs in 5 years. So I'm not really worried about that.

The salon doesn't do alterations. I think they used to, but they don't anymore. They gave me a list off their website with 12 seamstresses that I could choose from, one of whom previously worked for the salon. So, I guess I am doing some shopping around. I started looking at reviews on the ones that were recommended and thought I'd narrow it down to 3-4 and start calling them to check on availability, prices, etc.

My first fitting is scheduled for April 28th. The seamstress was fine with coming the first week of may but that was too close for comfort for me.

Start calling and see who you're comfortable with. I understand losing weight is important, but I really wouldn't want anyone to have my experience. 10 days before the wedding I did NOT have the dress that fit correctly. It was really stressful and I ended up taking the dress home because I just didn't have any more time to deal with it :-(

I lost a lot of weight (apparently by wishing because I was not DOING anything) right before my wedding and like 3 or 4 days before realized that the dress was WAY too big. So I would make sure you get the major alterations done in enough time for YOU to feel comfortable. But make sure that you try it on a week or two before your day to make sure nothing additional is needed.

Thank you for posting this! Before I even start thinking about fittings I have to find stores that have the dresses I want to try on in sizes that will fit me now! I'm also trying to lose a bunch of weight. I'd hate to order a dress smaller than what I could fit into when ordering, but might possibly end up doing it. Good luck!

My first one is February 18th. I think average is 6 weeks out.

My first dress fitting is a little less than four months out.

First fitting this friday, (3months) and she said we will have at least 2 more with the last one being a week before the wedding to make sure I am happy and the dress is good to go.

This is a burning question for me too, As I am in Taiwan.. I will probably plan a trip for a week next jan/feb to shop for the dress. will only have 1 week. then I will go back in july for another week. (these are the times my school has vacations, this way i only need to take off for the wedding)

Then I will prolly arrive 2 weeks before the wedding and do a final fitting. I am glad I have a year until I need to find my dress.... I want to lose weight before I go hunting...

Do you think 1-2 fittings will be enough?

I was told by the alterations person to do my first fitting 6-8 weeks. So, my first appointment is this weekend (6 weeks). I've read online that depending on how many alterations you need, you will likely have 1-3 appointments. If you are losing weight, they suggest you schedule your final fitting a week before your wedding just to make sure it fits.
