Dog down the aisle. what are your thoughts? UPDATE!!

Misty, on February 25, 2013 at 8:17 PM Posted in Planning 1 43

I belong to a yorkie group, and I would love to put a fuchsia organza dress on my yorkie and have her walk down the aisle in my wedding . I will probably have one of my sons drive her home after the ceremony while we're doing pictures. We live less than a mile from the venue.

What are your thoughts on dogs in the wedding?

4/17/13 UPDATE:

I just had a friend make a dress to match my MOH's dress. It just came today!!

The first pic is my MOH's dress; second one is my yorkie in hers! It came out so cute!!

My dog was going to be my best man... sadly he passed away. So for me I say if it is something important to you do it. My nephew was going to walk down the aisle with him... so cute... So in short my vote is YES!

I have a little 5 pound chihuahua who is my baby. I would've loved to do it but there's gonna be kids there and I know a few people that I'm inviting that are either allergic or scared of dogs so I can't do it :-(

My friends had theirs in a little tux and he was adorable and well behaved.

My two are are my children and while I would love it, I had visions of my male Pekingese lifting his leg and peeing on the benches or my little female poodle crying because she isn't with us right at the aisle. So I think we are skipping having them.

I think dogs down the isle are a great idea if they are your personal dog and a part of your life, but not sure about getting a random yorkie to do it. If you have a friend that has one that's another thing though. :-)

I am a dog lover so I would do it. If it were possible I would have our dogs incorporated in our wedding.

I really wanted our dogs in the wedding, but we're having a DW so it's just not feasible. Plus one of our groomsmen is highly allergic to dogs. I also thought it might be somewhat depressing to look back at wedding pictures with our dogs in them that may no longer be around 10 years from now.

I'm for it if the dog is well behaved and able to handle the situation. You know your dog best.

Our dog was the "best dog" in our wedding. He walked down the aisle with my MOH, stood at the altar with us in the beginning of the ceremony and then sat with my parents for the remainder of it. He took photos with us during cocktail hour and then a local childhood friend came by and picked him up and dogsat him for the reception.

We chose to include him because he is like our child, family. He is a small dog so easy to control, well behaved and socialized in crowded situations since we live near the city and he has been to many outdoor festivals with us. He also doesn't bark at all so he wouldn't be a disruption. It worked out perfectly and our guests loved him. Many people enjoyed passing him around and taking turns watching him at cocktail hour during the times when he wasn't in photos. Everyone was really disappointed when he left for the reception.

Cassie: Random yorkie??? Did my post suggest I'd get a random yorkie? I have my own, and she's the only one I'd have in there.

    ?????????????

FH wants to have both of our dogs walk the aisle in our wedding but they get overly excited when people are around and I could just IMAGINE their behavior during our wedding. I say if the dog behaves go for it lol

I on the other hand, will leave the babies at home that day :-)

LOL @ getting a random yorkie!!

I think that's a great idea (your dog, not the random Yorkie!). I would have loved to have my baby as part of our wedding and photos. Sadly, she passed away a couple months ago. My dog was more family than some actual family members - she came on vacation, errands and was there for me more than any person! Of course she would have been invited to the wedding Smiley smile

Thanks for all the comments. She's a good girl, and I think she could do well with someone walking her down. Without someone walking her, she'd walk to the first person and ask to be pet or picked up, LOL! She'd have to go home after the ceremony because we certainly couldn't keep her at the reception.

I say go for it! I love my 4 1/2lb yorkie poo sooo much. FH and I entertained the thought for a brief second, but she would go NUTS. She LOVES ppl and wouldnt even make it down the aisle because she's jumping into ppl laps trying to lick em all over lol. Plus, the place we are going to have it doesn't allow pets.

Do it! We were THIS close, but 100 pounds of puppy being controlled by someone else in front of that many people is a recipe for disaster in our case... Hah !

We're having our two border collies as our "best dogs" at the ceremony. They are well behaved and well trained, so they shouldn't be an issue. We have bought them collars and leads in our wedding colour aqua, with a bow tie for our boy and a flower for our girl. We got them from BowWow Couture off Etsy.

Please ensure you have a back up plan though. Our own dog trainers when they got married had their two Cavaliers in the wedding, but the morning of their youngest one was really unsettled so had to stay behind. Make sure you have a back up plan if things don't go well (the same way you would have a back up plan if you had children in the wedding or wedding party).

We picked our venue because they allowed dogs Smiley smile

We have hired a pet sitter to pick them up during cocktail hour.

I budgeted for a little tuxedo for my yorkie in the fall, but he died of cancer suddenly right when we got engaged Smiley sad

Yorkies are the best and if he's behaved you should definitely do it! I totally was going to and I think it would have been really cute!

LOTS of my couples include their dogs, either in 'person' or in spirit. We even have a separate website, www.vowwowwow.wordpress.com to help couples include their dogs. I guess it's obvious that we are all dog lovers......

We have a handler that we recommend, and I think that's a great idea, whether it's a paid pro or a family member who can really attend to your pet through the day.

    Go for it!
