Do you ask for discounts???

Alejandra, on May 13, 2014 at 6:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I know many of us are on a budget here. Do you make it a habit to ask for discounts when making purchases?(wedding related or not).

I am in the process of booking our honeymoon excursions and when I got to the check out page, there was a space to enter a coupon code so I googled it but did not find any. My friend suggested I ask one of the customer representatives I had been in contact with via email, but I felt weird doing that.

It did make me wonder about all the things I could save on just by asking. Is it worth it? Is it "tacky"? What do you think?

I worked in customer service and the rule was "don't offer discounts unless they ask". I would assume that a lot of places aren't going to just offer a discount up front unless asked so as to not lose as much money...

All the time! If I can't get a discount I ask for the hangers (love store hangers). I am always looking for a better cost!!!

I have asked every single vendor for a discount. Ive told them what my budget was and asked them what they could do and every single one has given me pretty significant discounts. Closed mouths don't get fed.

Yes, we always ask for specials, discounts, packages, and things thrown in for free.

Doesn't hurt to ask. I saved 30% off of my venue cost. I mentioned my wedding would be small and simple and asked if that could lower the price.

Awesome! I've been using coupons and promotions throughout the planning process but have not actually asked for a discount.

Tried to get a discount at our hotel for the wedding night. Our friend went in her gown and they upgraded her room. We got a suite so there was no upgrading. We asked about a wedding deal or discount and no go Smiley sad but last time we were there they heard it was my bday and we got a free bottle of champagne; so Mayr in my wedding gown they'll do the same!

I don't ask for discounts per se, but I have flat out told some of my vendors what I'm willing to pay.

DH is military so anything wedding related I definitely asked if they offered a military discount. Depending on the place I will still ask but not always

My husband is military as well & our DJ knocked down $1000 just as a thank you for his service.

I don't feel right asking EVERYONE, per se. But some places, heck yeah.

I waited until David's Bridal did their Veteran's Day sale to buy my dress, for example.

But I don't like to ask everyone, like people on Etsy or places like that for special discounts.

First off I love ChanelNewNew's new pic! You are so freaking cute!

I asked and received lots of discounts. I always google promo codes and when booking our honeymoon, I'll try to get discounts as well. There are a few places I never haggle with and that is clothing stores and restaurants!

Places love referrals, too. My DJ knocked $350 off of our price and upgraded our package because he was the DJ at a friends wedding and they referred us to him.

Our officiant gave us a military discount (FH is a Marine) but it was something she advertised on her website we asked about it. Didn't think of asking anyone other vendors.

My uncle and dad had to go the morning of my wedding to hunt down sherbet for the punch. They only found the kind they needed at Wal-Greens for $5.00 a pint. My uncle haggled the person at the cash register down to $3.50 a pint - hahahaha, I didn't even know you could do that!

I haven't done this along the way with planning but I just did it unintentionally when we went to order FH'a ring. The one he ended up liking was more than I had planned on spending. So I hesitated to commit and said let me think about it and he lowered it while we stood there by quite a bit.
