Do I really need something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue??

Shy-Bull, on August 18, 2016 at 5:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

Title says it all... I am struggling trying to find things or think of ideas for this. Do I really need it??

I think it is just more of random tradition that I know nothing about, but I'm hoping it is one of those "you don't have to if you don't want to" type things.

Is it supposed to be bad luck if you don't have those things!?

Thanks for your help!!

You don't NEED anything except you, the person you're marrying, and a marriage license.

You need oxygen, food, and shelter. Plus a FH/FW, an officiant, and a marriage license.

Nope. If you're into it, go for it. If not, don't waste your money

I skipped some of it, but did some of it. I had something old & borrowed -my great grandmothers brooch on my bouquet, and my new was my dress (my mom bought it for me). I had nothing blue.

Thanks for the (mostly) helpful responses. Don't forget the 2 witnesses @catbones and @sasswood.

Just didn't know much about this tradition and wondered if there was anyone who had helpful info on it.

Mostly helpful responses? All of the responses were helpful. What's your problem?

Yes you need one or your marriage will not be valid, you have to show these items to the clerk when you get your license.

I guess my definition of helpful is vastly different than a sarcastic remark regarding necessities. That's all!

I got my answer though, thanks!!

I can see someone brand new being surprised at sarcasm. You should not be. Ask silly questions, you will get answers to match.

Hey, H&S, while I can understand the remarks about necessities came off as snarky, they can save you a bundle of money, stress, and time by the end of your wedding planning, so please tuck it in the back of your mind, "I may want X, but do I actually need it?" I am a therapist and can assure you, even this tiny change in the words you use will make a huge difference in your outlook.

Oh, I don't think this is a silly question by any means.

@Zoe- I will definitely word my questions differently, because what I wanted to know did not come across adequately enough obviously.

I'm not surprised at all by the sarcasm.... I just was really looking forward to answers regarding people's thoughts on something old, new, borrowed, and blue.

Do you *need* these things to get married? Obviously not. Is it considered bad luck? To some people who believe that superstition, obviously yes. But if you don't care and don't believe that it will bring you bad luck, don't stress about it.

Nope. Plenty people don't follow tradition/superstition and ended up fine.
