Do i need bridal portraits?

Jennifer, on September 7, 2016 at 9:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I decided to go with a photographer that i love but is a bit more expensive than what i was hoping to spend. Her package includes engagement or bridal photos. I definitely want the engagement session but im not sure about adding a bridal session. Im not a huge fan of pictures with just me but im worried that ill regret it if i skip it. Are bridal pics a must?

They aren't a must. A lot of people on here have never even heard of them, and even think the idea of them is stupid. They are definitely a regional thing. I had them and absolutely love them. It's totally up to you.

I heard about them here. I won't be doing them, although I kind of like the idea. I'll have plenty of one on one time for pictures the day of. I can't add another appointment or thing to do on top of everything else I have scheduled.

They're a southern thing. If I was having a big wedding with the fluffy dress, I was going to do them. My sisters did them when they got married.

ETA: They're often done after the hair and makeup trials and florists sometimes will offer a free mockup of the day-of bouquet for the photos.

I think outside the Mormon community and the south, bridal portraits aren't common at all. I don't totally understand the point since presumably you'll have "bridal pictures" of you on the wedding day. I would go with engagement photos only if I were you.

I don't understand the point of bridals. I have tons of portraits of me in my wedding dress... from my wedding day.

Bridal portraits are definitely a regional/familial thing. They can be beautiful but, not necessary at all. I would rather get the pictures of me on my big day in all my bliss instead of a stage photo session on a separate day so I'll be skipping them.

I've never even heard of them.

EDIT: just read the regional thing, I'm from CT.

I don't even offer them, and had not been asked about them in at least 6 years. Most are going with engagement photos.

Yup, it must be regional because I'm in NYC and didn't know this was a thing until I joined WW. That being said, ask your photographer to take a few portraits after your getting ready photos. My photographer did this without me even asking for/expecting it.

Can the photographer grab a couple of solo pictures of you on your wedding day?

I had mine do that so I didn't have to book an entire "bridal session"

But I think part of the reason people do bridals before the wedding to display the pictures at the reception.

I would think that the photographer being with you most the day getting ready - you would get plenty of shot s of just you. Also, they should always take a few "beauty shots" of just you with veil, flowers, something, putting on jewelry etc. I would definitely ask what type of "Day Of Wedding" photos they normally capture of just the bride so you can make a more clear decision of if you want those photos or not.

I live in Ohio and this is the first I have heard of bridal portraits. Will you photographer be a little cheeper with out them? Mine took off $300 because we did not do engagement pictures. ( I think they are pointless and don't need them for save the dates ). (Yes I know some of you are going to think I'm crazy )

I'm from New Orleans and everybody and their momma takes bridal portraits lol Usually you take bridals and then pick one of your favorites, blow the pic up as big as it goes, and display it on an easel at the entrance of your venue.

I'm doing bridals for the sole purpose of one picture (see attached pic). If you have the extra money in the budget, go for it. If not, erase bridals from your to-do list and move on honey Smiley smile

I had no idea what these were before WW, so with that being said, I'm not doing them.

Definitely not a "must". Go with the engagement shoot. The day of your wedding the photographer will most likely be able to take a few photos of just you by yourself in your dress without adding the extra cost.
