Do I need a Trial Run for Makeup?

Mrs. Castig, on December 10, 2012 at 1:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

My budget for make-up and hair was $300. I decide I would add my MOH but then thought I should also add my mom. I found out it would be cheaper to add one more person so i added my brothers wife. The total is $385 for all of us; plus tip ( I was thinking $100 from all of us). This puts me $185 over budget. The trial is $150.00 This is way over budget. I never wear make-up so I don't even know what looks good on me. Would the make-up artist be able make me beautiful (lack of another term) without it or is this required?

It's hard to say. If you are laid back, and if you have scheduled plenty of time so that if you don't like it you can redo it, then I'd say don't worry. If you're a worrier and/or have your schedule planned to the minute, I'd say it's better to try it out first so there's no worries on the day of.

It's not required but since you don't wear make-up and have no idea how you would look it's best to get one done. This way you could let the MUA know if you like it or need a little more of this or a little less of that. Could you bargain with the MUA? Is the $150 just for you or for all of you? If it's for all of you could you ask everyone else to chip in with the trial and you'll take care of the day of?

I'd say yes, I wish I had done so...if the trial is too costly, do you have any loved ones (friends/family) who have at least SOME makeup experience that can try different shades and looks on you? This may be helpful and not as costly.

You never want any (bad) suprises day of!

I honestly would, because I'm the same way; I don't wear much makeup, so I want to make sure it doesn't look cakey on my face. I had gotten my makeup done for my friend's wedding (obviously with no trial since it wasn't my own wedding) and it was SO cakey. I thought I looked like a clown. The makeup I'm going to get done for my wedding is airbrush instead of traditional, so I'm definitely going to get a trial to see how it looks. I know it's not in your budget, so maybe you can either try to talk to them and see if they can do a little better on the price, or maybe you can ask help elsewhere?

I'm having my make-up & hair trial done the same day (same person doing both) it's only $85 all together for both including the trials. I don't wear make-up as much as I use to, now I do just when we go out to the club or a special occasion, I want something different that I know I wouldn't be able to do myself on a regular basis.

I plan to have one. I have even scheduled a trial for my E-pics. Also, you still have some time before the wedding so I would go to a Bridal show. Sign-up at the MaryKay table for a free facial. I did and I had all of my girls (and close fam & friends) over for a Mary Kay day. Everything was free and we got to play with different shades of Make-up.

Also, the fee that I am paying for our day of make-up includes the trial. Maybe you should show around and see what you come up with.

I have 5 BM, a MOH, a FG, and the mothers. The mothers are not included in the trial and neither is the FG. In total it is about $300. Maybe a little less. My make-up is free as a gift. I think you should have the trial. I would hate to have WEDDING pictures of myself wearing make-up that was not tasteful or to my liking.

What if I cut back on guest gifts just have a couple nice ones instead of a lot of smaller ones? Would that be rude?

I personally didn't have a makeup trial because 1-it was $75 and 2- the artist's shop was far from my home. I wasn't worried about the trial because I am super laid back with makeup and had an open mind, but knew what I wanted my makeup to look like. That being said I LOVED my makeup for the wedding, but I am a fan of makeup. If you are not going to do a trial I would recommend that you atleast have some inspiration photos with you when she does your makeup. This should give the MUA some ideas.

I had a hair trail done, but no makeup trail. The girl doing it knows me well, the colours of the wedding, my dress and style so I was not worried about not doing a trail. The end result was gorgeous and turned out great and I received many compliments on it.

She also made sure to schedule lots of time for both the hair and makeup the day of.

That depends on how picky you are and how experienced your MUA is with your skin tone/ type and desired look. Could you perhaps cut your brother's wife and see if the artist would do the trial for the same price as having that extra person? I really don't think you're obligated to pay for your brother's wife's makeup for your wedding. As for cutting back on the favors, I don't think that's bad. I've never really felt the need to receive a favor as a guest.

Also, I think it's a little strange that the cost for your trial will be more than the cost on the day of (but I'm assuming 385/4). Maybe you can have your MOH, mom, ad brother's wife choose between either hair or makeup?

Have you considered looking for a different MUA? My daughter's make-up trial was free. I had to pay for mine though.

Also, if you can't find someone else, I agree w/ Amy V. It is actually what I did for my wedding because I couldn't find a MUA where I was married in VT. I don't wear make-up daily these days, however, I do wear it often enough to know what I like and what I don't like. However, I wanted a step by step decision so my nerves didn't get the better of me on my day of. I made an appointment with the Estee Lauder counter & had a make-over. I wrote down the colors and purchased some of them. I did my own and actually I liked my day of make-up for my wedding more than my day of make-up for my daughter's wedding.

You can check out the MAC counter. They are usually slow in February. Call and make an appointment. Their make-up since to be popular with those that are not old tars. ; )

You don't have to have one, but I would suggest it. I don't wear make up much either so I plan on doing one because I worry lol.

Previous posters made good suggestions of checking out make up counters Smiley smile you could take pics of how those turn out and give it to your MUA to get close to

I actually just talked to my hair stylist about this. She said that since she's been doing my hair for a while and "knows what it's like" that I don't have to bother paying for a trial with her. But when I suggested doing the same with my MUA she quickly begged me not to. Simply because your MUA doesn't know your colors and style as well. She said with the trial to write everything down including colors. Since I'm totally against breaking the bank to do this, I would go with @CaroleM's advice! Get a good idea of colors or style that you like and try to prep as much as you can.

I like Amy V's idea about the Lancome counter!! That way, you can have someone snap a picture on your phone and show the makeup artist exactly what you want!!

I'm planning on doing my own makeup... sadly, I look white as the driven snow, but my skeletal structure is from my Indian blood, so no one in the history of mankind has EVER done makeup for me and made it look right... I usually look like a raccoon. So, if I WAS going to have a pro do it... I think I'd go with Amy's idea! Smiley laugh

I would 100% get a trial- run, especially if you don't wear makeup. I was MOH this past september and my best friend had gotten a trial run before she picked me up from the airport and I told her immediately- that is a NO GO... she is such a beautiful girl and it was literally caked on... and she was surprised because it was airbrushed!! I am all about keeping within budget so I would also go with Amy's idea!

I don't know how much you like or wear make up but MAC does a free demo/ full face make up if you buy $50 worth of make-up and then you tip. Same idea as the Lancome counter and they show you how to do it.

If you're going to get a makeup counter makeover, I can't recommend Sephora enough! Their girls and guys are great and will honestly choose great products for you because they do not have to sell products to make a commission like the ladies at the mall counters have to. Also, Sephora carries a wide range of brands, so you won't be limited to just Lancome or Dior. I think this is very important because my favorite eye shadow brand is not my favorite lipstick brand is not my favorite eye liner brand and very few brands make a foundation that matches me and photographs well.
