Do I need a cake stand?

Esposa, on July 23, 2012 at 1:35 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 16

Is a cake stand necessary? The caterer doesn't provide one, and the cake guy said he delivers it on a round silver-wrapped board. I was going to purchase a cake stand but I'm wondering a) if it's necessary to look right and b) if that makes the stability of cake-cutting trickier. Thoughts?

Nope Not necessary. It just makes the cake taller and adds more decor. It's your choice completely

It depends on the height if you are worried about the cake cutting. If it's too tall it does make it a little trickier

We didn't have one. Our cake lady used the round silver wrapped board. It looked fine and it didn't affect the cake cutting. I couldn't see spending a lot on a cake stand that I will never use again.

    I agree with M.S.P., I don't think it's necessary.

My cake is very simple and I want a little extra bling, so I am renting one rather than buying one to save money. It's costing about $20-25

We didn't have one and it didn't look off at all. Our cake was just on a clear plastic cake board. I think its something you can add if you find one you like/can afford, but for us it was just an added expense and we decided that money was better spent elsewhere.

Maybe you can ask around and see if maybe your mom or aunties have one.....if you decide you need one. That's what I did. I am using my mom's.

If you have a cake stand, make sure it has 4 legs. It will be much more stable than a pedestal stand.

I'm actually making my cake stand. I've got some wood that I'm making one with. I'll post a picture soon. I plan to make it this coming weekend......

Im up in the air, i like how they look when people find them to match their theme etc but i've honestly never been to a wedding where they had one... i just like the added height.

I like the idea of adding some height since ours is a 3-tier cake to serve about 50 people. I bake enough that I would use it in the future (though my mom's a different story so I'd need to purchase one). However, idea of one more thing to buy and store in the kitchen afterward has me leaning towards no cake stand. Thanks everybody!

I saw some nice silver cake stands on the Hobby Lobby website. With their 40% coupon, a 14" stand was like $30.00. I have also seen them on eBay for about $30-50 depending on size.

Sometimes a baker with rent or loan you one. :-)

Cake stand is not necessary at all. It does add height and decor. I plan on renting or making a cake stand.

My friends and I actually purchased our wedding cake stands from a woman who makes beautiful cake stands with removable cake skirts. Seems that most bakers only provide those boring looking plain cake rounds to display your cake...why spend so much money on a gorgeous cake to just put it on a dull piece of cardboard? You can buy the stand kit I think it's called and it comes with a stand, a cake skirt and matching flower and ribbon for only $65!!! She has a good selection of fabric skirts and crystal ones too. The best thing about this cake stand is you can change the skirt over and over to match every event! This is the stand I purchased. Check her out on cakedress.com!

We went with one of the stands from Sarah's Stands in hot pink. Very happy with it and really made our simple cake look great. Also having enjoyed having the stand in my kitchen at home. www.sarahsstands.com
