Paying for bridal party's hotel accomodations?

Rachel, on January 18, 2013 at 9:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hello ladies,

I'm getting married in April and I just got a block rate for our hotel (only $92 a night!). All of my bridesmaids are in college and some can pay for the dress, hotel, etc., while it may be a struggle for other. I'm pretty close to being over budget, but I've been considering paying for their hotel room (they would share a room). They don't have to buy plane tickets (they live ~1.5 hours away) but I think they're planning a bachelorette party that's out of town, so I think paying for a hotel room would be a nice thing to do. The more I read different posts, the more I realize this really isn't custom at all. I sort of stuck my foot in my mouth by mentioning to one of them that I "would try to pay for at least part of it IF I can find it in my budget." My mother thinks it's not my responsibility at all.

So my question is: Is it rude to now go back and say "The wedding is costing us more than we thought. Would you all mind paying for your accommodations?"

I don't think its rude. That's not really something you should have been covering anyway. When you agree to be in a wedding I think that's an expense that you should consider. So I wouldn't be offended if someone said that to me. I've never had the bride pay for my hotel when I've been in a wedding.

I think it's a really nice gesture. I paid for my BM's dresses even though it's not "required" or "customary." Since you already mentioned that you would try to chip in, it might be kind of bad if you back out. How about paying for half? Would you be able to swing that?

I'm not paying for accommodations and 4 of my BM's live out of state. I've opened up FH and my home to them and so has 1 of my other bridesmaids, and so have my mom and dad. If they'd like to pay for a hotel that's totally up to them, but I can't afford it. That being said, I don't really know the right etiquette if you've already told them you could.

Since you said "IF I can fit it in the budget" then maybe you could say to them "After going over our budget I realized that I misspoke when I said we could pay for half of your accommodations, FH and I won't be able to help pay for that." And then you could possibly offer them an alternative? Since FH and I are staying at a hotel the night of our wedding, our friends staying at our home is no big deal and they've agreed to be out early. We figured they're bringing our gifts back anyway, and our venue is literally 3 mins. away from our home, they may as well crash there.

You definitely don't have to pay, but I don't think it's OK not to do what you sort of promised. Pay half, $50 is not going to put you that much over the budget, and let them cover the rest. That way you will at least remain consistent to what you said.

Thanks girls, all good points. What basically happened is I was talking to one of them and I said I wished my parents had room at their house, but we have a lot of family from Europe staying there. Then I said, "I feel bad that you all have to pay for a hotel, but I'm not sure if I can swing it with my budget. I'm going to try to pay for part of it." She then told me not to worry about it at all and that she didn't think I should have to pay for it. I think I'll get them a room for the night of the wedding and the night of the rehearsal they can most likely find friends or family to stay with (some of them have family in Houston.)

I paid for my girls because all of them were coming from out of town. Pretty much i saw it is as they were "visiting" so of course i should host them. So i paid for their hotel room but the good thing is that we all stayed in the room since i had a small bridal party (3 girls), so I could a room with double bed and chilled together the night before. The night after they stayed in the room but i stayed in a different room with teh newly acquired husband Smiley smile

    Tough call.
My sister MOH couldn't afford her room and so was going to have to share with her bf and my parents. I took pity and paid for her room (but I said btw this is also your birthday present)

When my bff got married her husband paid for my entire trip and accomodations as it was a destination wedding and I couldn't afford to go. I had agreed to be MOH before they decided on destination.

I think if you arn't inviting your BP with dates it sure would be nice to pay for their accomodation, they do alot for you and it is customary to invite them with a date.

I did pay for them all to stay with me in the bridal suite the night before the wedding, it was a fun girly night, we did each others nails and talked and watched movies and listened to music. Im glad I did it.

We booked extra rooms and paid for them for use for our BP IF they had too much to drink (actually, any of our guests that fit that category, we had a room available.). Only one of the BP took us up on a room..the rest went to family so they weren't 'wasted'. Its a nice gesture, but not required.

Its a nice gesture but it really is up to you and what you feel comfortable with. We are covering our BP's rooms because they are staying in the cabin with us. It's up to them if they want to stay there or not.

No, you don't have to pay for your bridesmaids. Although it's a nice gesture, you could also find yourself in the predicament of having to pay for all of them because it's not really a good idea to pay for some of them and not all. Another option is when you give your bridesmaids their gift (if you are doing that), you could always give them each a money gift card for like $20 each to help them with expenses...
