Are pearls too clasy for a modern dress?

I think pearls are always appropriate. my dress has some really modern details, but i am going to wear my grandmother's pearl necklace, along with some other more modern necklaces. i am accesorizing up!!

Heck for Christmas party, I wore a very modern colorful skirt with white ruffle tank top with pink cargain sweater over it with long pearls necklace with modern necklace as well. I always mess with jewerly with fashion.

I'm not sure where she got this but my mom said she was told that you don'tt wear pearls for a wedding because they represent tears... no I suppose they could be tears of joy but for whatever reason the brides on our family don't wear them... could be a hispanic thing but you could use it if you dont' wanna wear them

ok I got clarification from my mom.. there is an old saying that said pearls were the symbol of tears and each pearl would represent an occasion the husband would make her cry. Thats why we don't wear them

If you don't want to wear pearls, don't wear them. But I don't really understand how they could be "too classy." The whole appeal of pearls to me is that they go with a wide range of formality.

Could you wrap the pearls around your wrist and wear them as a bracelet?

I agree with Mrs Allen. Show us the dress and the pearls! Haha, but seriously, I think it will go just fine. If you want tho, you could pair the necklace with another necklace to modern-it-up. I'm doing a multi-strand necklace that includes pearls and some other pieces so it goes with my modern dress. Just a thought. Good luck!

I agree that pearls can go with a wide range of looks and can never be "too classy" In our jewelry shop alone the styles using pearls range from casual to formal as seen below.

Let me just reiterate: if you don't want to wear them, don't. :-) It doesn't matter WHY you don't like them if you don't; you're not obligated to wear them.

Victoria, I have also hear that about wearing pearls on your wedding day. I'm not too superticious but better safe than sorry. Besides, I had something else in mind, like diamonded jewelry, CZ, something else besides pearls.
