Did you invite your boss?

Amy, on June 7, 2016 at 4:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36

I am closer with my old manager than my current manager (but like them both) and we are all at the same company (but in different groups). Is my gut right that if I invite my old manager, I should extend an invitation to my new one as well? Did any of you invite or not invite your managers?

I invited my old boss and the boss that replaced her when she quit. My old boss came, my new boss didn't.

I work in two places invited both bosses (both are small companies) my husband works In a larger company and also invited his boss. It all depends weather you want them there or not.

Good to know - maybe that would happen for me too that only one would attend.

I am only inviting one other coworker.

I invited 3 of my direct managers (and one former who had retired recently) but did not invite their boss, who is in our department as well. My situation may be a little unique though. For one, I've worked here with all of those that I invited for 14 years. Also, DH worked here for over 6 years as well, so they all know and have worked with both of us for a decent period of time. The main boss that I did not invite really hasn't been with the company nearly as long as the others and I really don't have much of a relationship with him (and neither did DH) so we kept him off the list. I feel like he would have been more annoyed to get an invite than anything, lol. He's just that kind of boss. The others were super excited to be invited and also to have a chance to catch up with the one that has retired. I also invited a few other co-workers on my same level.

You can invite who you want. I'm inviting my old boss and a few co-workers, but not my current boss even though I'm still at the same place.

You don't have to invite your new boss if you are not close.

Nope, never had a boss for too long and got to know super well anyways. Probably won't invite coworkers either.

We didn't invite managers or partners, but we invited most of those on the same level as FH, (that he has a relationship with, he doesn't even know most of the audit staff at his firm). It definitely feels like an all or nothing type of situation, at least on various "levels"

I am inviting my boss. He is very sweet and (overly) concerned about his employees. When I got home from vacation on Saturday, he texted to see if we made it home safely.

If I didn't invite him, I think he would have a little bit of hurt feelings, and I don't mind having him there.

I actually have 8 bosses, but I'm only inviting the one I consider my true boss, because we work in the same building. I suspect the other 7 will have hurt feelings too, but I can't afford an additional 14 people in a ~40 person guest list.

Yes, my current boss is invited. My co-clerk is also invited. Only 5 people work in our office (I work at the courthouse for a judge, so the judge is my boss and he is invited). The only other person I work directly with is my co-clerk and we talk wedding all the time and I already know she can't come due to an annual family vacation. I am not sure if my boss will come though. Its not important to me that either come, its more so makes it easier to get days off for wedding related things and the wedding. I'm a term (1 year) employee so I am not entitled to PTO, any time off I receive is just my boss being nice. So I got a Friday off to travel to my shower, a Friday off to travel to my bachelorette and hoping to get at least 2-3 days off for the wedding. And them being inviting means I can talk about this with them which makes asking for time off easier.

Thanks all - this is great info and glad to hear there's no one size fits all. I might wait and see if we have a lot of declines (we just sent most of the invites out) and then make a decision either way depending on our space.

I did, and regretted it because by time the wedding came around I couldn't stand her ass! Luckily, she couldn't make it!

Who you invite is up to you. If not everyone is invited, there are a couple considerations.... 1) Don't hand out wedding invitations in front of people who aren't invited. 2) Be clear about who is invited on the invitation (if they get plus ones or not).
