Did you invite your boss?

Amy, on June 7, 2016 at 4:22 PM

I am closer with my old manager than my current manager (but like them both) and we are all at the same company (but in different groups). Is my gut right that if I invite my old manager, I should extend an invitation to my new one as well? Did any of you invite or not invite your managers?

DH invited both his old boss and his current (at the time) boss; he got along well with both, but wasn't really in touch with the old boss anymore. But it was a good move, because things changed where he works and he ended up working for the old boss again.

I will be inviting one of my co-workers only. I don't feel close enough to the others to invite.

I invited both of my bosses! I didn't invite the owner of the company or anything, but my direct supervisors and I are pretty close over the last 4 or so years so I am happy to have them there for our day Smiley smile

I'm not inviting any of my main bosses but I am inviting at least one, maybe two, of my supervisors. I feel closer to them.

I work at 2 elementary schools. I am inviting all my administration as well as everyone I work with. I work in a very small school system-3 schools total- & inviting admin is expected. Since everything is political, I'll invite them whether I want them there or not. Only one admin will come if any though & about 10 coworkers.

I am inviting the whole office. We are a small law firm and we are all close. I have gone to all their kids mitsivas and such - its normal. I mean i dog sit for one boss and one of the women from work stayed over night with me at the hospital when i got really sick at a convention we went to. - i was 24 but she didnt want me to be alone. I spend regular - voluntary time with most of them outside of work and since that was my critia - it would mean leaving out 2 which would be unkind

I invited my current boss, but not my previous one or my PM who I also work closely with. My boss is my mentor and work mom, so it just made sense.

I'm a manager in retail and since I'll be gone, the other managers have to be there to run the store so there's really no point in even inviting anyone that works in the store with me. I will, however, be extending an invitation to my District Manager. She gets really giddy about milestones in the lives of the people that work for her and I know she'd be tickled pink to be invited and I can spare 2 seats for her an her husband.

I invited mine. I work in an office owned by two optometrists and there are about 25 people total there. FH, on the other hand, works for a company that has locations in a couple other countries as well as here in our city. Here in our city alone, there are like 700ish employees, so he only invited a few friends from work, but that did not include his boss.

I'm inviting my old boss just because he was a big mentor for me and also happens to be a mutual family friend. He no longer rates me, so he'll simply be attending as a guest! I wouldn't want my new boss there, I wanna let my hair down

I'm inviting my assistant (who is also a good friend outside of work) and both bosses. I've shared a small office with both owners for almost 10 years now so it wouldn't feel right not inviting them. I'm also inviting my boss from my last job (the event company I still freelance with) as they are like family and also decorating the wedding earlier in the day. We said no to any other co-workers though. FH made the decision not to invite his boss only because they've never met in person (virtual team) and he would have to fly in. Figuring the boss wouldn't make the trip, FH felt it was gift grabby to invite him.

Ultimately, it's up to your situation and what feels right.

I don't want my boss to see me party so no. I don't think I could fully be myself with any coworkers present.

Amy- please don't do that. Guests that you are B-listing will likely know and be hurt or offended. If your boss' did not make the first cut, they really do not need to be there and it is totally ok to leave them off of the guest list.

FWIW, I will be inviting all of the owners and managers of my restaurant. It's family owned and I've worked there for almost 10 years.
