Did you end up with a completely different dress than planned?

Just curious to know your experience? What did you have in mind (silhouette, fabric, neckline, etc.) and what did you end up with and why?

I'm probably the odd one out, but I saw a dress online that I absolutely fell in love with. I called a local boutique to asked if they carried it, and they did. I tried on a few others first, then the one I had come for specifically. I LOVED it. I tried on a couple others after but I knew it was the one, I called and ordered it a few days later

I did. The dress I fell in love with originally was more of a boho style and in blush pink. It was only sold online so I ordered it and when it came in, although I still loved it, it was going to need a lot of alterations on the length of the dress and train. I am really short and they must have made that dress for the Empire State Building with the amount of length it had lol. The costs of the alterations were insane so I went to Davids Bridal on a whim and found a white ballgown that I loved and bought on the spot.

It's just enough detail but not too much! There were happy tears when I looked in the mirror (and I don't cry). It's an Essense of Australia gown! D2533 I believe. The stock photo on their website doesn't do it justiceSmiley smile

100% yes. Totally thought I’d go with a Hayley Paige ball gown. Ended up with a Martina Liana trumpet. Honestly it just made me feel great in my own skin (which before this wasn’t really a thing) it was kinda a huge turning point for me in how I saw myself. Who would have thought trying on dresses would have such a huge impact 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is the dress I chose. Pre alterations.

This is my second marriage and I am a bit older. I didn’t want a traditional wedding dress. I looked at Mother of the bride dresses and purchased one. It was champagne color. I had second thoughts and wanted something that looked more bridal. Fell in love with a cream colored drop waist wedding dress

Absolutely yes. I feel like ALL of my saves were consisting of mermaids/fit and flair. And I definitely went a whole other route... More like full bodied A Line (per stylist)/ballgown (per designer's website)
I did get a couple things right. I knew I wanted spaghetti straps. 💕
Ended up learning lace does not look good on me, good long sleeves are hard to come across, and I do not like low backs (on my self).

    YES.
I had in mind a sheath gown with lace, spaghuetti straps or short sleeves with a halter neckline or something that made my back show off. I didn't want it "flowy" either, I wanted it to go straight down my body. I didn't weight more than 110 and I absolutely have no good back end or chest either, so I felt uncomfortable with flowy dresses. I thought I would get lost in them and I saw myself with a gown that went straight up with my body. Went to my first dress meeting with my mom and aunt, and it was the worst experience I could ever have. I only tried on 2 dresses: the first one was laced up, nude see through and white beautiful lace with a slim figure, halter and all the way to my toes completely hugging my body. I LOVED IT. Tried the second one (believe it or not, the one I got married in) and my mom and aunt started saying mean comments about how that dress hid my body the best, since I didn't have a "figure" as they kept saying. Went with that one just because I was dying to get on the car, leave, take a shot or two on the way home and cry my eyes out. 2nd fitting I went by myself (loner here...) and I can say I wasn't in love with the dress yet, I was just doing it because it had to be done and I couldn't go back. Again, left and cried the whole way back to my appartment. I remember the only person I shared my dress feelings with was with my now husband so yes, he had an idea of how the dress was. 3rd and last fitting I went with my Maid of Honor and the dress obviously was done. When I tried it on with the head piece and earrings, I felt something. Maybe not love, but maybe excitement? Nothing compared to the actual day when I had my makeup, hair, accesories and everything extra done that I actually felt in love and cried sith the dress on. Everyone was speechless and needless to say, my mom and aunt were right at the end... Not in the body positivity parts at all... but in that the dress was the one, kind of way. Keep a really open mind and give dresses you don't see yourself in a chance, you'll end up even looking at yourself in a better way than before and of course, FEEL IT AND FEEL COMFORTABLE IN IT. Don't make my mistake and let other's opinions shadow your body positivity, good vibes in general and happiness or excitement in the process. I did not enjoy mine at all.

Update! So ladies, just got back from my appointment and although I didn’t say yes yet, I have a completely different outlook on what I want now! I thought I wanted long sleeve, mermaid/trumpet laced dress. No A-line, no strapless, no sheath or ball gown!

Well, turns out sheath and A-line flatters my body way better, I also look better in a strapless and spaghetti strap. The long sleeve made me feel like I would sweat quickly from dancing. My mom picked a dress for me to try that I did not think I would like but of my top choices!

The sheath dress they have is so pretty BUT I felt the bottom half of the dress was bare and lacking the detail and lace I wanted. =(
I have another appointment at a boutique an hour away I am interested in their collection....so I’m hoping to finally say yes.

My question, am I supposed to be in love with my dress? I really liked what my mom picked out but I think I might want to see more...I’m still not sure!

I went in knowing I wanted a ball gown. I tried on pretty much every style, and I liked the ball gowns the best. My dress doesn't have the sweetheart neckline that I love and figured I'd get. It's also not sparkly or lacy or anything like that which I thought I would want. I liked dresses with those elements, but I LOVE my simple textured organza Vera Wang ball gown. I tried it on in grey, but I'm ordering it in Ivory. Fingers crossed it still looks how I imagine it xD

It helps if you LOVE it, but there's also a possibility that the dress needs to grow on you over time. You can usually tell when you're just not feeling it. Definitely go look at the other store, see what they have. If you find yourself comparing every dress you try on to another dress then that kind of points you in the direction of what one is probably capturing your heart. Don't feel pressured to make a decision (unless you're running short on time) try on dresses, and then go home and sleep on it before making your final decision. I made that mistake, and i ended up going back today to try on more dresses to exchange it xD

I wanted a sheath or trumpet (like a drop waist a line?) with full sleeves. Ended up with a strapless ballgown!

Thank you! I was looking back on it and I noticed that one model had the lace of the bottom dress pulled up more. I’m thinking maybe it looked bare because I need it altered? I’m not sure how to alter lace though! See comparison below!! Thoughts? I think I will have to make a second appointment now that I have a better idea what I want. That is, if I don’t find my “dream” dress at the other boutique appt.

See how the lace on the model is higher? I’m wondering... the store does have something very similar with more lace but it’s like $400 more ($1,300) the one I tried is like $800

Most likely that’s something they’ll have to take care of when they hem the dress. They might need to remove the lace from the bottom, hem the dress, and then put the lace back on. It’s not uncommon but it does make the hem a bit more expensive due to the extra work. It’s a beautiful dress, and it looks good on you even though it’s a bit long. It is a possibility though that the hem job might put the cost of this dress on par with the cost of the other dress (obviously dependent on alterations costs)

I just said Yes to the Dress today and it was completely different from what I intended!! Had tried on some before, thought I wanted sleeves (still may do something for that bc I don't like my arms!) and a v-neck and a straight a-line. Nope! Mine is strapless, with tiers in the skirt, ivory over blush! I cried and knew that was it!
