Did You Cry When You Found Your Dress?

Lisa, on October 19, 2023 at 12:40 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 35
In so many wedding-related movies and TV shows that I've seen, the bride almost always cries when she says yes to her dress. It's a super sweet moment to watch, as you can tell the bride feels happy and beautiful. Seeing one of these shows recently, I thought back to my dress shopping days. I did not cry when I picked out either one of my two dresses, though definitely felt excited about the dresses I chose! I'm not a very emotional person to begin with, so I'm not surprised that I didn't cry.

But then I wonder, how common is this? Do people usually only cry in the movies when they choose their dress? Or do many people get emotional in this scenario? Did you cry when you said yes to your dress?

I feel like this really depends on the person! TV shows and movies can give unrealistic expectations when it comes to dress shopping in my opinion. I didn’t cry at all when I picked my dress, but I did feel beautiful.

I said yes to 3 dresses for our DW, and zero tears were shed for any of them. And I feel like I had all the "tear inducing details"! It was just my mom with me when I said yes to the first one, so I had the intimate mother-daughter moment that seems to invoke tears on the tv shows. The other tear jerker moment I've noticed on those shows is when they add the veil. But when they put a veil on me, I hated it LOL The 2nd and 3rd dresses I had custom made for me. So despite them being exactly what I wanted, and seeing my creations come to life... still no tears; despite being super excited about them! Now, for our courthouse ceremony, I ended up getting the skirt I really wanted to wear originally, but didn't find in time. I adore it! And when my fiance saw it, he said "That is SO YOU". Still.... no tears. Like you, though, I am not a very emotional person; so maybe that's why. I've been wedding dress shopping with several friends when they've said yes to the dress, and none of them have cried either. I do think they purposefully choose emotional people for those shows though, and that they try to invoke emotions with their interview questions.

I cried personally, although I’m a pretty emotional person I didn’t expect to because of how I react with most things I like being a polar opposite reaction.

I did not cry, but that doesn't mean I love my dress any less. I knew it was the one the second I put it on and have not had a moment's regret. Had my second fitting last night and still love it!

I totally agree that TV and movies often give unrealistic expectations for many things wedding related, but especially dress shopping! Lack of tears certainly doesn't mean there weren't strong emotions. Awesome that you felt beautiful in your dress when you picked it!

Oh wow, you really did have all the moments while dress shopping! Awesome that you were finally able to get the skirt you wanted. I totally agree that adding the veil seems to be the moment where people are most likely to get emotional. You bring up an excellent point about emotional people being chosen for shows like Say Yes To The Dress - and then a couple glasses of champagne plus beautiful dresses plus deep interview questions probably also help producers get a tearful reaction from brides.

So, full disclosure: I’m a very emotional individual, and always have been. I got watery-eyed at the notion of, “Oh, my gosh! I’m trying on wedding dresses!”

Now, finding ✨My Dress✨ was a different kind of emotional. More like a sudden rush of total happiness, confidence like I had never felt before, and a “This feels right” sort of feeling.
But it was at David’s Bridal, so they had me ring the “I Found The One” bell. The stylist handed me that little bell, and told me to close my eyes and think of the moment I met my groom… This is where the water works really got started. Once she gave me the go-ahead, I rang the heck out of that bell!
I still say it’s a surreal feeling to be so happy that you laugh and cry at the same time.

I didn't cry, but that's typical for me. While I loved my dress, it wasn't that big a deal to me.

I did not cry, but the woman that was helping me with my fitting said that when I tried on my dress, my whole face lit up. I legit could not stop smiling lol

    YES!!

I def cried when I found the ONE. Its something i've always dreamed of, my wedding dress. I tired on many dresses until I found the one, and I KNEW it was the ONE because it made me CRY! It was so perfect!

When you know you know! I got my beautiful wedding dress from Elite Bridal in Laguna Hills CA. Its a boutique wedding dress shop and exceeded my expectations.

I'm not much of a crier honestly, but I absolutely love my dress and even after my lymphedema diagnosis I will still wear it other people's opinions be damned. I cried more when people told me I shouldn't wear it than when I picked it out.

I actually cried over a dress I didn't end up getting LOL! I found a gorgeous Galina Signature dress from Davids Bridal and "said yes to the dress" but didn't purchase that day because it was expensive. The next time I went back I re tried it on and I had a bad reaction on my skin from the beading so ultimately decided I didn't want that for my wedding day if it was going to give my skin a reaction. The dress I got was definitely my 2nd choice, so I didn't cry with the one I ended up with, but I still LOVE the one I got instead.

Awesome that you felt so strongly about your dress! I wasn't sure how I'd react to finding mine. I'm not really an emotional person, but still wasn't sure what my reaction would be. What was it about the dress that made you feel the most emotional?

Totally agree - just because someone doesn't cry when finding their dress, certainly doesn't mean that they like it less than those who do cry. Awesome that you immediately knew it was your dress, and exciting that your wedding is so close!

Aww, that is SUCH a sweet story with the bell!! I love the idea of associating the feelings of finding your dress with the moment you met your partner!

I did not cry. I was more frustrated because of my allergies due to the fabric of all the dresses I tried on. It was such a struggle, until I found one that worked. It was more like “thank god something fits me and it looks pretty.” My mum and maid of honor cried though.
