Days Off

My friend thinks it's normal to take the week of your wedding off from work. But we are leaving for our honeymoon right after, so I am concerned about taking too much time off. Do you feel like it was really helpful/important to take several days off before your wedding? How many? I don't want to...

Do you feel like it was really helpful/important to take several days off before your wedding? How many? I don't want to ask for too much, and I am also not sure why it's necessary to take a whole week off.

A lot depends on your schedule and how big of a wedding you're having. Mine is an hour from my home and the Thursday before (getting married on Saturday) they have decoration drop offs, and included a rehearsal in our rental fees. So I'll probably take the Friday off to do everything. If I had a larger wedding or out of town guests I might have done a week.

I don't think it's necessary. I'll work Monday-Wednesday of our wedding week and my fiance will work Monday-Thursday of our wedding week. So I'll take off two days, he will take off one. But we have a month of coordinator and I'm SUPER organized so it isn't like I'll have a ton to do.

Honestly, I think it has to do more with your job than your wedding. I am able to take off both the week before and the week after my wedding (I work in personal tax, and am getting married in August)

I don't expect to have a ton to do that week, but I look forward to spending time with family that is in town as well as relaxing and taking care of last minute details.

But a lot of people don't have that luxury, which is OK too.

I plan on taking the week before and after my wedding off (before to finish last-minute tasks and accommodate family; after for the honeymoon). However, I also haven't used any PTO this year and don't plan on using any until then

I'm not going on a honeymoon until next year because my fiance started a new job in March but I took off wednesday through wednesday for a Sunday wedding. I want the few week days to make sure everything is perfect before the wedding; mani/pedi, nails, facial, and hair appointments; then chill time on saturday before the big day then I have family from out of town visiting so I want to spend a few more days with them after the wedding when I am relaxed. I have enough PTO to take 2 weeks off if I wanted to for that and a honeymoon but since my fiance's new job gives them more PTO after 1 year we have to wait. If you both have the PTO i don't see why you can't take two weeks off. If not, I would try to take off a week and a half maybe?

It depends on how much extra preparation you need for the wedding and how important your vacation days are to you. Our venue is all inclusive and setting up for us and the drive is 4 hrs so I'm only taking off the Friday before. And that's really only to go pick up the marriage license. We aren't doing a honeymoon right after so I'll go right back to work. I would just rather take off work for other trips than spend it on wedding prep.

We are getting married on a Saturday. I plan to take off a half day on Thursday and all day Friday before and then Monday-Friday the following week for our honeymoon.

Oooh a massage, that's def worth the extra day or two. I am totally an anxious bride, so anything I can do to help keep that down is good!

I have been saving every last vacation hour for over a year for this, I still only have enough to take a week and a day or so. Do you plan on staying home a day or two after the honeymoon? To settle back into life?

Omg yes, this is what worries me. I am afraid of sitting around and overthinking every little thing! I am glad I am not the only one haha

For me we aren't taking a honeymoon so I think I will take the week off before and then the Monday after, but it will depend on how much is left to do, when my venue lets us in (it will depend on if they have a Friday event that week) and when my sister comes in town.

Honestly, I think taking the whole week off would stress me out. I might feel differently as I get closer, but I only need one day for nails/massage etc. and maybe one day to pack for our honeymoon and sort decorations (we plan on renting most decor anyway). I think it really depends how DIY you are. If you will be making a ton of stuff, you might want the time. Otherwise use it for a great honeymoon!

I started a new job in January and they’re stingy with PTO the first six months. I’ll barely have enough time to take the day before the wedding and the week after for the honeymoon. Also, my job is crazy-if I’m not there, there’s no one to cover my cases. So I have to have everything done for that period of time before I leave. I probably couldn’t afford to take more than the day before anyway.

My job has no issues with how much time I take off. I just need to have enough vacation time to take off. I plan to take the Friday before our wedding off (our wedding is on a Sunday), as well as the week afterward and the following Monday off for our honeymoon.

I took the week off before and it was a great decision! And I took a week after my wedding too for our honeymoon. It made me feel a lot more relaxed and excited.

We’re having a destination wedding and are taking 12 total days off for the wedding.. flying up the Friday before and leaving Tuesday after. No official honeymoon after. But a mini moon for 10 days in Oct followed by a honeymoon next summer for our one year so we can take 4 weeks. We’re lucky we own our own business and can operate it remotely.
