Clinking Glasses and How To Kill Them?

I cannot stand the "tradition" of guests clinking their glass until the newlyweds kiss. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to civilization if you ask me. Any wedding I've ever gone to where clinking starts happening, I start to grit my teeth until smoke spews out of my head. It's not...

I cannot stand the "tradition" of guests clinking their glass until the newlyweds kiss. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to civilization if you ask me. Any wedding I've ever gone to where clinking starts happening, I start to grit my teeth until smoke spews out of my head. It's not pretty.

Needless to say, I *really* want to make sure no one is forcing us to kiss by clinking glasses at my wedding, but I'm not decided on what the right way to enforce that is.

Any of you go to (or have) a wedding where clinking glasses was strictly prohibited? What were the alternatives offered, if any, and did the guests hate it? Love it? Show complete and utter indifference towards it?

This happened at all the weddings we went to when I was growing up! It doesn't really bother me .. but I do like the bells idea to prevent glass from breaking or making it into a silly interactive game with the guests.

I find it interesting that so many people don't like this. It happens at just about every wedding I've been to, and I think it's charming. I won't mind if people do it at my wedding.

I didn't say anything about not doing it at my wedding. No one did it. No one even asked about it.

It doesn't really bother me but at my wedding we are using kissing bells. I didn't know what they were until my mom bought them and gave them to me but they are little gold bells that you ring to get the couple to kiss. The ring kind of quietly, so it's not going to be terribly loud and obnoxious but like I said the noise doesn't bother me and I don't mind rushing to smooch my fiance.

I've been to a barn wedding where they had a cowbell. It was pretty funny and weird. I have also been to a couple country weddings where people literally just banged their fists on the table. I was definitely not a fan of that.

Arielle- I'm from Michigan and it's happened at the vast majority of the weddings I've been to.

I HATE this! its the number one thing I don't want happening...my family is horrible with this! Every ten seconds, when you have food in your mouth, when one of you is in the restroom or outside, etc.

I have no idea how to fix this...I thought about just not kissing when they do that...but I can picture them booing and doing it all the more to be annoying. FH said just have plastic silverware, I laughed. but no...no plastic.

I never heard of the bell or the dice...those seem better. then someone just cant anonymously start clinking. they have to get up in front of everyone and ring the bell.

Edit: WHY did this post three times!

Just ignore it and people won't keep doing it.

If they want us to kiss, the table has to stand up and sing a song about love ... I'm inviting a bunch of my music major friends so it might not deter them too much ...

I'm hoping this doesn't happen at my wedding, but if it does, I'll probably just ignore it and just do other things (continue eating, go outside, whatever). Stuff like the glass clinking makes me uncomfortable.
