Chipotle for Catering?

Kylie, on September 8, 2016 at 4:09 PM

My fiance and I both love chipotle and he really wants them to cater our wedding. I am not opposed to it because I also love chipoltle but I'm wondering what our guests will think. We're also going to have a candy and desert bar with cupcakes and cookies but I just wanted other opinions.

No joke I wanted to do this too but FH said no lol. I say do it as long as it's not an extremely formal or black tie wedding

Fajitas aren't uncommon down here for wedding and big catered events. so chipotle for a semi-casual or casual wedding? Sure! Just make sure there's plenty of guacamole.

I have had food poisoning from Chipotle twice and I know a handful of other people who have, as well. I wouldn't particularly side-eye it at a wedding, but I definitely wouldn't be eating it...

My friend had it for her baby shower and it was delicious....but I still have yet to eat it again after that E. Coli scare.

Bill Ackman would be all about that but I think most people still have a bad taste in their mouth about Chiptole.

I think its funny that most people come here and state "I'm paying for my own wedding" like its something new and different.

These days, people who have help from their families are really the exception. Most people pay for their own weddings.

At any rate, it would be best to try to find a caterer who can actually do set up/tear down, etc for you.

Do you have a favorite Mexican restaurant?

If you're going for casual, afternoon, I personally wouldn't mind chipotle as a guest, BUT...if you have to pick it up and have someone set it up, I'd go with a different caterer who can handle that for you.

Catering is one of, if not the, greatest expenses related to a wedding. Your top priority should be to host your guests well. Sacrifice in other areas before resorting to serving Chipotle.

If you're going for Chipotle, budget for a few of these as well. This one has wifi!

I wouldn't want it because I don't plan on having diarrhea at my wedding. I find that all those chain Mexican places just taste like beans anyway.

I have no opinion on the issues of Chipotle since it's pretty good here. However, it is not wedding appropriate IMO.

I wouldn't side-eye someone serving me Chipotle. I've been to weddings where I know the bride and groom paid more for more traditional wedding food that ended up being pushed around my plate because it tasted gawdawful. I don't care what anyone spends, just give me something edible.

I'm also biased, as I've never been sick from Chipotle and I'm also having Portillo's cater my wedding.

I think this really depends on your crowd and the atmosphere and budget of the rest of the event. If it's a small wedding with a young crowd that didn't travel too far, and the rest of the wedding is casual, it's fine. If guests are travelling far, or if your venue is fancy, or particularly if you've spent a lot of money elsewhere (expensive dress, favors, photo booth), you will get some side-eye. To be honest, I personally would happily eat Chipotle at a wedding. It's more diverse and allergen/ preferences accommodating than something like a pasta bar. Plus, I've had three $100+ a plate wedding dinners of rubber beef and chicken that was so dry it was completely inedible and everyone got hammered drinking on an empty stomach.

    Chipotle is better then self-catering!!!

I personally love Chipotle, so I would probably be super stoked.

Unfortunately, I did read the comment about how you would have to pick it up yourself. That's a lot of food to sit out without any cooling/warming stuff.

I vote NO due to you shouldn't have to pick up your own food on your wedding day and then worry about storage.

Chipolte. I've never eaten it, but I'm going to be completely honest. The first two words that come to mind when I hear "Chipolte" are not "fast food" (which it is), but rather, "food poisoning". Back in February, 2016, in the wake of the food poisoning issue, Chipolte closed all of its nearly 2,000 restaurants to give employees a refresher course in food handling safety. That's a dramatic step, but it was probably necessary. According to news releases, the company spent about $10M to instruct farmers and small scale suppliers on how to meet more stringent food handling safety protocols. I just read a news story from February, 2016, and it said that Chipolte suffered a 44% reduction in sales following the late 2015/early 2016 food poisoning outbreaks. The story goes on to talk about the three pathogens that caused the problem, but at this point, that's not important. What we're talking about is Mexican fast food at a wedding -- Mexican fast food with a poor reputation.

Make no mistake...although Chipolte is popular, it is still solidly classified as fast food. While it may be a tad more expensive to purchase an entree at Chipolte (at least $6.50) than McDonalds, they're still competitors. Even without the food poisoning scarlet letter, I'm not sure I'd be cool with a fast food entree at my wedding. Actually, I am sure -- no go. I'd cut the guest list by 70% in order to toss fast food and replace it with Filet Mignon, Chicken Marsala, and Salmon options.

That being said, Mexican fast food is preferable to self-catering or potluck. It's still preferable to Kentucky Fried Chicken or white "You've tried the rest, now try the best" white, pizza boxes. It's still preferable to Subway, Burger King, Wendy's (the best of the fast food brands), or Roy Rogers. It's one step below Olive Garden -- a decent, Americanized Italian restaurant that now caters weddings at a very reasonable cost. As far as issues of dining are concerned, Chipolte is still far below most restaurants -- Italian or otherwise -- who would cater your wedding very nicely.

Listen, you can do what you want (besides potluck or self catering). How would this idea, which may have seemed feasible during an at-home planning session, actually look when the fast food is laid out on serving tables? Ehh...it's going to look like fast food (that comes from a restaurant that unfed wedding guests might flock to after they left a cheese and cracker wedding).

If you want to do Mexican food, do authentic Mexican food and get rave reviews. I have family in San Diego, and they know the "real" restaurants to go to if you want authentic Mexican. Chipolte isn't on the list. If you want Mexican food, that's fine (have some plain chicken for those older individuals who would love Mexican, but can't eat it) -- but pay for the real thing. Does fast food have a place at a wedding reception? Not in my book. When you take that route, you run the risk of every guest assuming the worst -- you wanted the guests because of the attention and the gifts, but you really couldn't afford them.

I wouldn't do this even if it does fit your wedding atmosphere because 1) they don't deliver, 2) that means someone will have to pick it up and set it up and if they are a guest at the wedding they may have to miss a portion of your wedding to do so, and 3) since chipotle doesn't set up or deliver, there's no means to keep the food warm which means guests might be forced to eat cold tacos with soggy tortillas for dinner. These reasons sound like they will inconvenience at least a couple people, if not the entire guest list. I don't think it is worth the risk, no matter how much you love chipotle. Find a place with a similar menu (like a local restaurant that offers catering--delivery and set up) and book them instead.

I mean, Chipotle may not be the most wedding appropriate but I need to be a Chipotle warrior here. I eat Chipotle on average once a week - maybe more. I never get sick of it, I absolutely love it. I've also never gotten sick FROM it. The e-coli thing was very minor in comparison to the amount of locations Chipotle actually has across the country. Many other restaurants have had the same, if not worse, incidents and more of them. Stop associating Chipotle with e-coli. It's just plain ignorant. I hate when people take something as law just because it's highly publicized.
