Cake or Assorted Desserts - What's your choice?

Madison, on April 23, 2019 at 8:16 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 56

I was talking to my mother last night about the wedding cake. She is a little traditional and was appalled that I didn't want a big wedding cake. I was thinking a small cake or a few rounds on a display for the "official" cutting, and then other desserts (cookies, donuts, chocolate strawberries, etc.) across the table. To me, a full cake is pricey, especially with so many guests that may or may not like the flavor we choose. Also, the caterer we are looking at can take care of desserts, so one less vendor to manage.

So... my question is who has done this/planning on this? Show me your inspiration or real pics!

Was the cost of doing this more or less than a traditional cake?

Edit: For reference, we have a approx guest count of 150. First couple quotes were $5 and $5.75 per person. I cannot see spending $800+ on cake!

If you decide to offer an assortment of desserts, cake should still be one of them. If you're cutting cake and having cake for yourselves, it should also be an option for guests. We're doing a small cake for cutting and various cupcake flavors for guests. It will be significantly cheaper than a traditional tiered cake because it requires much less construction and decor.

Yes, I was thinking of cupcakes as one of the options at the table. Just trying not to do a big elaborate cake.

We considered doing a dessert bar instead. With a September wedding it's still cooling off so we considered doing a small 2 tiered cake to cut and an assortment of pies and cookies. We considered a s'mores bar and I really liked the idea of an ice-cream bar but with the limited budget we just couldn't justify it. Instead we enlisted the help of our friend who's a baker and as her gift to us she's making our cake! so now instead we'll have a 5 tiered cake in an assortment of flavors.

We decided to have an assortment of desserts as well instead of only cake. We go for our tasting at the end of next month. We plan to do a 2 tier cutting cake, sheet cake for additional servings, cookies, our favorite sour candies, and possibly cheesecake. Lindt lindor truffles will also be placed on each table for guests to enjoy.

I’m having a smaller cake with a ice cream float bar & a milk & cookies bar. My cake is 2 tier & serves 70 which is actually over my expected guest list but it was under $200

I wanted a dessert bar but fiance did not. We're doing a bride and groom cake. Fiance was open to a dessert bar but didn't like the options for dessert. It makes sense with us.

It was also one of the splurge categories because we like cake. However, nobody is allowed to hate the cake at a southern wedding... It's like saying the bride's dress is ugly. Anyone who does will be side eyed out of existence.

I'm clueless on tiers and how many it feeds. What's your guest count to feed with two tiers?

We are doing this. We are having a 2 layer round cake for the cake and my fmil is making it. She is an amazing baker and had no problem with it. Plus, FH loves her buttercream frosting and wouldnt have it anyother way. And then we are having cheesecake (cherry and blue berry crumble) Snickers pie, cookies, choclate coverd strawberries, doughnuts, peanut butter balls and ordo balls Smiley smile We arn't huge cake fan so we will be eating the cheese cake Smiley smile The total cost will be about 75-100 and thats for the doughnuts, snickers pie,and cheese cakes. Everything else will be home made frome the WP or very close family!

We are having a cake as it’s included in our package. No clue what size because we haven’t met with the baker yet. We will also be having cookies and pastries as well as an ice cream sundae bar, also included in our package. As the night ends there will also be cookies and milk and coffee to go. I loved this package bc I have a sweet tooth lol

We are doing a 3- or 4-tier cake with fondant. I used to work at Sam's Club as a cake decorator (their 3-tier is $70, feeds 66, and cake is delicious) and still talk to a girl who has been a cake decorator there for like 7-8 years. She does some cakes on the side as well and is really good. So I am using her outside of Sam's Club. She is charging $125 for either choice. And then we will just get a 1/2 sheet cake at Sam's for $22. I've seen several prices for cakes and they are using $5+ per person, even more with fondant.

I would look around at other cake vendors for options. I know large stores like Walmart and HEB (a great grocery down here in Texas) do wedding cakes and people say they are much more affordable. I've also seen some killer cupcakes done instead of cake and they are usually a lot cheaper.
I'm also having 150 people and my professional cake lady (over 30 years experience, has been on a food network challenge and won) was -super- affordable, at least in my eyes. She's doing a three tiered cake, half french vanilla with amaretto filling and half chocolate with raspberry filling for only $500. I was expecting to spend over $800 and was pleasantly surprised. The samples were aso delicious.
Try asking other vendors you've booked for recommendations of affordable people. I've found that my hired vendors are the absolutely best source for finding stuff I still need. My Day of Coordinator suggested my officiant. My officiant recommended my cake lady. My cake lady recommended my caterer and possibly my florist as well (meeting with her Sunday).

I went with a 3 tier cake from Sam's that feeds 66 people for our wedding cake. It's $70. Then I'm getting about 120 cupcakes ($15 for 30 of them). Two cookie trays ($20 for 84 cookies). Lastly, a friend is making a German chocolate cake to match our wedding cake size. So, for 2 cakes that feed 60ish each, 120 cupcakes and 168 cookies: roughly $175. I may downsize the cupcakes to just 60-90.. but still, at most would be under $200 for PLENTY of sweets for my at most, 150 people. Plus, people can walk out with the cookies/cupcakes when they leave so I'm not stuck with them.

My guest count is 80 for three tiers, but she said it would feed up to 100.

We skipped cake, it was not missed. We opted for an alternative dessert through our caterer which was a big hit with guests. We weren’t interested in doing a “cutting” but if we had we would’ve just cut into the other dessert.

We are doing a dessert bar provided by our caterer, and having a personal cake for cutting...and mostly for me because I love cake Smiley smile

I like this idea of cutting into another dessert though, that's interesting!

A two tier cake can feed a lot if it is big enough. We're doing a small 3 tier for the aesthetic. We're doing the 4/6/8 for a guest count of under 50. There will be 2 other desserts.

That sounds similar to the plan I was thinking, and I like the price.

I just don't want to be stuck eating cake for breakfast for the next week! Are you going to put out little bags or boxes for them to take?
