Cake or Assorted Desserts - What's your choice?

I was talking to my mother last night about the wedding cake. She is a little traditional and was appalled that I didn't want a big wedding cake. I was thinking a small cake or a few rounds on a display for the "official" cutting, and then other desserts (cookies, donuts, chocolate strawberries, etc.) across the table. To me, a full cake is pricey, especially with so many guests that may or may not like the flavor we choose. Also, the caterer we are looking at can take care of desserts, so one less vendor to manage.

So... my question is who has done this/planning on this? Show me your inspiration or real pics!

Was the cost of doing this more or less than a traditional cake?

Edit: For reference, we have a approx guest count of 150. First couple quotes were $5 and $5.75 per person. I cannot see spending $800+ on cake!

We are debating between the two also. Fh and I don't really eat cake (I don't really eat sweets period but can enjoy a bite here and there but don't like cake). I think fh is going to keep the cake option as it is included in our all inclusive venue (can take it out and get some money back) because he likes the look of them and how you can have different flavors. We may also have a his favorite and her favorite candy jar or a candy bar

I personally would much rather have a dessert table! We were discussing the idea of having a small cutting cake and a dessert table that the venue offers that includes cake options but also has cheesecake, cannolis, cookies, etc. That sounds much better to me because not everyone likes cake (and my sweet tooth likes it all Smiley winking ) but we haven't actually decided anything yet.

No, I'll send the cake home with someone if they want it or put it on plates for them to take though. The cupcakes and cookies they can just walk out with - they don't have to have a box.

To save money, you could do a small cake for the cutting ceremony and have sheet cakes hidden away to serve. Offering 1-3 flavors of cake is a fun idea.

As a guest, I LOVE cake. Cupcakes or cake pops work too. Donuts are ok. But honestly, I’d be disappointed with cookies or brownies (if the only option).

I'm doing both. We'll have enough cake to feed 1/2 to 3/4 of our guests and our venue is providing us with a small dessert bar that will have two to three pieces of small desserts for each person. Personally, I like the variety - not everybody likes cake. Most weddings I've been to opt for a small cake for cutting and then have cupcakes and such.

We are doing this! A 1 tier, simple cake for cutting & pictures. Then a dessert bar with cupcakes, cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, and cheese cake bites! It cost honestly about the same, but we are doing a big dessert spread.

We're doing a smaller cake with an additional sheet cake for more servings, that saved a couple hundred dollars to start.

We aren't having a cake at all. We are having donut towers instead. We are also having a S'mores bar and cookies.

Depends. Cake is one thing to think about. I wouldn't want to put more time into thinking about an assortment of desserts! Does your venue offer a dessert bar? Mine does, I just didn't want it cuz I went with cake. The dessert bar per person would've added up to way more than my cake, 4 tier for $325. My mom is making an assortment of italian and other cookies so that'll amp up dessert also.

We chose to go with a small two tier 4/6" cake for us to cut, then six different flavors of cupcakes for guests. We are paying around $430 for an estimate of 125 guests.

Dessert bar of mini-cheesecakes and mini-tarts with fresh fruit, chocolate, whipped cream, etc toppings. We wanted something a little interactive. We are cutting a slightly larger cheesecake for ourselves.

Hi! We decided on both. A two tier (8"&6") for show and cutting, cake balls(up to 4 different flavors), cookies, and two types of bars. The 8" cake itself is "supposed" to serve like 42 people or something, so we will MAYBE keep the 6" for ourselves and serve the 8" if people want a slice of that. The wedding cake is champagne flavored-AMAZING. That ended up being our favorite, but we also got champagne cake balls, chocolate peanut butter cake balls, red velvet and the last is undecided. Anyway, we went all across the board for our desserts. Have fun with it! There's no rule on what you have to do. Do the small cake for your mom and get whatever else you like too!

To answer your price question: I am a cake decorator. It's been a little while since I worked at a grocery store and made them, but even then they were seriously over-priced! And that's just a grocery store, sadly. It's the same product no matter where you get it, really. It will cost us $140 for the cake itself, and with 192 cake balls, 8 dozen bars and 72 cookies, the total price is right at $450. That's so fantastic, we just might call and order an extra couple dozen champagne cake balls for our freezer Smiley smile

In comparison, we originally wanted to go with a more upscale bakery to do the desserts (plans changed big time and we had to scale back in some places) which would have included little tarts and little individual size cakes. The tarts alone were $30 per dozen!!! I wanted extra desserts that people could take home in goodie bags as the "Thank You" gift and that final price would have been outrageous! The lady we ended up going with charges like $18 for two dozen cake balls and under $9 for a pan of 16 bars. Waaaay more affordable and still super delicious!

Good luck and enjoy the tastings!!!

I'm with you! we're having a small two-tired cake for cutting, probably get it at either Walmart of Sam's club where they are pretty affordable, and a sheet cake. It's fall for my wedding, so we're probably going to have apple pies since it's huge apple orchard time here in the fall. My sister-in-law makes AMAZING chocolate chip cookies and i'm buying the ingredients for her to make a couple dozen

How fun! I remember at my cousins wedding, she found a place that did these giant chocolate strawberries with painted tuxes on them! They were soooo cute and delicious. She put one on each place setting as the thank you I think, but we sat at a table with just a few of us so I ate the additional gifts that didn't have owners. Oops! But...Yuuuum.

Our venue offers cookies and brownies so we took that option and are having cupcakes with fruit filling as well.
