Cake or Assorted Desserts - What's your choice?

I was talking to my mother last night about the wedding cake. She is a little traditional and was appalled that I didn't want a big wedding cake. I was thinking a small cake or a few rounds on a display for the "official" cutting, and then other desserts (cookies, donuts, chocolate strawberries, etc.) across the table. To me, a full cake is pricey, especially with so many guests that may or may not like the flavor we choose. Also, the caterer we are looking at can take care of desserts, so one less vendor to manage.

So... my question is who has done this/planning on this? Show me your inspiration or real pics!

Was the cost of doing this more or less than a traditional cake?

Edit: For reference, we have a approx guest count of 150. First couple quotes were $5 and $5.75 per person. I cannot see spending $800+ on cake!

For our daytime boozy brunch wedding dance party we didn't want to have a cake cutting to disrupt dancing.

My husband's grandma made homemade Italian cookies and my mom made Filipino cassava coconut cake and brought Chinese mocha cake. In addition we had an assortment of dessert for 100 guests from a bakery and paid I think $250 including delivery.

We had almond and chocolate croissants, blueberry coconut muffins, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, vegan and gluten free chocolate cupcakes.

Things were set up in stations as was the brunch food.

I am doing cupcakes for my wedding. No cake at all. That way there will be multiple flavors for everybody. Our guest count is close to yours and I agree with not wanting to spend that much on a cake.

We are doing cake- but most likely just a small tiered cake for us, parents and siblings.

For majority of guests it will just be sheet cakes from baker (if reasonably priced), but BJ;s and Costco cakes are also family favorites for birthdays and special events so that's our back-up.

I am so excited for our dessert bar. We are doing a small cake for us to cut and then lots of desserts!

Cupcakes: Chocolate Chip with Cookie Dough Frosting, Funfetti with Caramel Frosting, Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting. Bars: Scotcharoos & Brookies. Cookies: Snickerdoodle & M&M. Chocolate Covered Pretzels.

We are having a big wedding, so we have 420 desserts and it cost us about $800 including our cake, set up and delivery, and rentals of the serving ware!

My husband I used both cupcakes and a wedding cake for our reception. Our cupcakes were from a local baker and we had red velvet, vanilla creme, and strawberry creme. We used these cupcake stands to show off the cupcakes.

If you like Bundt cakes, Nothing Bundt Cakes can do your wedding cake compared to the traditional wedding cake. You can either have tiered bundtini(s) on the side or a dessert table with your choice of desserts from Sam’s or Costco to be cost effective. Here some photos to look at for reference. ♥️ This is what I’m planning to do..since traditional cake is quite pricey.

My sister and her husband had a smaller cake that ran them about $110 I believe. This cake was for ceremonial purposes and then offered to the bridal party/immediate family. Everyone was served sheet cake from Costco which ended up being wayyyy less expensive than one giant cake.
This is the route my FH and I will also be taking

WOW! I love this! Thank you for the inspiration. FH and are are planning cupcakes, mini chocolate pies, mini fruit tarts and some other small type desserts. I am not a big dessert or cake fan, he loves chocolate pie, and I do not. Not a hill I am going to die on, lol.

I love traditional wedding cake and would be slightly disappointed if you didn't at least have cupcakes.
