Buying a wedding dress online?

Rachel, on April 24, 2019 at 6:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 34
I am currently looking at a wedding dress on ASOS for $150 and also one from Lulu’s for around $90. It would be amazing if I could spend less than $200 on a wedding dress. Wanted to get opinions on buying a cheap(ish) wedding gown online? Experiences? Maybe somebody has even bought one from those two sites? Thanks!

I don't know about Lulus but I think Asos is hit or miss. I would try Etsy. They have some dresses in the $300 range. Maybe less. But I saw several in the $300 range when I was looking

I buy tons of my clothes from Lulu’s and the quality is usually very good - I wish honestly I would’ve gone with them for bridesmaid dresses! I would advise you read the reviews and go over the pictures on Lulu’s which will help you understand the fit recommendations and quality. Fingers crossed you find your dress — the price and savings sounds incredible!!

I’ve been looking at Cocomelody and Azazie. And I’m super nervous about picking a dress from online but those websites offer at home try on and that’s pretty exciting, and convenient!

I purchased from cocomelody and the dress was awful. I thought I’d be ok since I actually had brick and mortar stores, but I was wrong. I paid for the custom sizing and it was nowhere close. I filed a complaint with PayPal so I got my money back, but it was a terrible experience.

I hope my thoughts help other brides who want to know more about these shops!

You have to set your expectations pretty low to be happy with a dress from either online store (ASOS or Lulu's). If you go to a real bridal shop with dresses worth several thousands of dollars you will, of course, think the "online" dresses are cheap. I've tried on dresses from Lulu's and ASOS. When I first got them in the mail, I thought "These are so cheap." I decided to go to a bridal shop to compare. After I tried on a $3000 dress at LovelyBride in LA, I thought, "Now I know why those other dresses cost so much." I justified the high prices and told myself it was worth it for the quality. So I paid a stupid amount for a dress from an Australian label (probably still made in China). I also bought a dress from ASOS. I'm way happier with the dress that I bought online because I enjoy knowing I got get a terrific look for 25x less than what I paid at a bridal shop. The "cheap" dress is so unique and fits more with who I am as a person. And I will happily tell everyone the price!!! I would never in a million years tell anyone how much I paid for the other dress which I currently have up on StillWhite.

Both ASOS and Lulu's rock in the customer service department. You can try them on and know you can return them if you don't like them. Don't abuse it though... they will crack down on excessive returns. But you can order multiple dresses in one order and return it no problem.

    Quality

Lulu's quality will shock and amaze you. The quality is far superior to anything from ASOS Bridal. However, ASOS bridal will treat the experience with a little more flair. If you actually order from ASOS bridal (and not just a white dress from their regular stock), they will send the dress in a white box. The dress comes on a hanger inside a garment bag! Lulu's will just stuff your dress into a bag.

    Dresses I've tried from ASOS:

ASOS EDITION embroidered flutter sleeve wedding dress - I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS DRESS. The sleeves and the back (or lack thereof) really sell it! The quality is what you might expect for this price range. Unlike more expensive dresses that might have silk or satin lining, this dress dress is lined with polyester, which doesn't have that luxurious feel. The fabric is light, which makes dancing way more enjoyable. You will need additional lining. I wouldn't recommend this dress if you have a larger bust as there isn't any support. You can add cups but things might shift during flight...

ASOS EDITION Embroidered Flutter Sleeve Maxi Wedding Dress - Same as above but different lace. I really loved the side view but the front was way too busy for me. The swiss dots are everything! It's also a brighter white than the other flutter sleeve dress. Also very light fabric!

ASOS EDITION plaited wedding dress- I feel so so about this one. It's currently on sale. I like the little bit of train that comes with the dress so it feels bridal but the braided fabric in the bodice feels strange to me.

Club L low back crepe detail fishtail wedding dress - No lining and bad shape.

ASOS EDITION Embroidered Bodice Wedding Maxi Dress - I didn't like the feel of this one on my skin. Not sure why but I felt like a young child in it. It was the first ASOS bridal dress I tried on and I was appalled at the quality back then. I hadn't adjusted my expectations yet. I would say the quality is similar to the flutter sleeve one that I love so much.

ASOS EDITION nouveau embroidered wedding dress- More gold/ivory than I wanted. Very pretty though!

    Dresses I've tried from Lulu's

IN DREAMS WHITE LONG SLEEVE LACE MAXI DRESS LULUS- GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS but I wanted more floral in the lace if I was going with a lace dress.

AVELINE WHITE OFF-THE-SHOULDER MAXI DRESS LULUS- I loved this dress so much but I couldn't get the right fit in the bust. The quality was the best out of all the dresses I tried (between both ASOS and Lulu's).

I looked at a of the places people named already but got one in veaul.com for $255 and that includes shipping and taxes. Amazon has some pretty good ones too. I will probably spend around $300 total in mine because I want to add some custom alterations.

Although I have not purchased a wedding dress from Lulu’s I have ordered several other dresses that I have worn to weddings and other special events and I LOVE them. It is my go to store for fancier events. I am also looking at Hebeos for a gown. Has anyone used them?

I ordered a custom skirt off eBay to go with my Martina Liana bodysuit. The skirt was well made but looked cheap! Waste of $150. I finally found a designer skirt at a bridal shop. HUGE difference in quality. At the same shop I found a discontinued wedding dress I wore for my reception, only $200. Shopping online just isn’t worth it for wedding dresses in my opinion (unless you don’t want a traditional wedding dress).

Both ASOS and Lulu's have great return policies so unless you're buying something on final sale, you should be good to try them out to decide for yourself! I think if you want a traditional wedding dress, there are likely other stores out there that will offer them on a budget, but if you don't care as much and just want a beautiful dress, then it's fine. I found my wedding gown on Amazon for $95 and while up close you can probably tell quality isn't the best, but it does look like a wedding dress and makes me feel like a bride.

    Hi Rachel Smiley smile

If you were curious and have the budget to do so, I would recommend you check out each stores policies on returns and order them to try! Most online stores have very good return policies these days. I'm not familiar with Lulu's, however, I know that Asos's is great!

If you were happy with one of them and wanted to keep it, you could make any minor alterations with a local seamstress! I've done this loads of time with dresses I've purchased online.

What style wedding dresses are they? What is the silhouette, neckline, back, etc?

The two options are really beautiful Rachel! I would definitely take some time to consider your options to make the right decision for you. My sister-in-law actually bought her wedding dress on ASOS for £80!! It was really beautiful on her and she has had the chance to wear it again! It was a pale pink color and bought it in the BM section! What color are you wanting your BM's to wear?

My biggest recommendation, look at the reviews!! People might have left comments on the fit and how the dress feels and looks! Everyone I don't online I try to find pictures of it in real life, with real customers. I've bought plenty of cheap stuff that has looked amazing and also wasted a lot of money not doing my research!

We actually still haven’t decided on winter 2020 or spring 2020 so it will depend on what season we go with. For winter, I think I’d have them wear burgundy/maroon or possibly burnt orange. If we do spring, probably would have them wear powder blue.

Both would be really beautiful options, and it's great that you still have plenty of time to think about it!

My dress from ASOS should be coming in today! It was $150. I'll be making a post when I get the chance to try it on. They have a good return policy, so I wasn't super worried about any risks with buying a dress online.
