Brides with fit and flare or mermaid dresses...did you get a mermaid petticoat?

Amanda, on March 2, 2012 at 2:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15

I have a fit and flare gown and it never occurred to me to get a petticoat for it. The bottom has a good flare to it, but it doesn't keep that shape when I move in it. Did you wear a petticoat with your dress. If so, where did you get it? I want some opinions because I have already spent money on a slip dress ($80) that I wouldn't be able to wear comfortably with a petticoat.

Is your slip an A-line slip? Or is it mermaid, but just not a stiff enough material? e-bay has a ton of mermaid slips. http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-mermaid-bridal-dress-accessories-fishtail-petticoat-lining-slip-/300662738586?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item4600e54e9a

I saw those on ebay. I guess the fact that they are from China makes me nervous. Here is a picture of my slip dress. I could probably wear them together as long as its comfortable. I just don't want to be tugging at it all night at the wedding.

My dress is a mermaid & I purchased a mermaid petticoat at the same bridal boutique where I purchased my dress! I wanted the bottom to flare a lot more & it was perfect with the petticoat. I paid like $75 for mine.

Whether you need a slip with your mermaid dress - or not - depends upon the weight of your dress. If your mermaid is made with very lightweight material you can probably get away without one. However, a lace mermaid or any heavy fabric - you will need to have a mermaid slip. I prefer the Alfred Angelo mermaid slip over the David's Bridal slip - It has more "ooomph" HTH

I didn't have a mermaid dress, but just as a PSA to Brides about petticoats...
My consultant tried to push me into buying a petticoat to wear with my dress. Me being the naive bride I was, had no idea, and was seriously thinking of paying the outrageous price they were charging for one. Then, when they called the seamstress over so I could get a rough estimate for alterations, she heard that I was considering a petticoat and told me that a petticoat with my dress was not only unneccessary, but the dress looks better without it!

I tried the dress with and without, and I loved it without. The consultant STILL tried to insist I needed one, and tried selling me a mermaid petticoat for an A-line dress. I did NOT buy a petticoat, but simply wore a longline bra and standard slip.

My dress was silk chiffon, very flowy, which is one of the things I loved about it. Don't let a consultant push you into buying one unless your dress really needs it!

Julean - most bridal consultants are expected to sell X amount of items along with the gown and if they don't do it they'll be asked why. A lot of dresses don't need petticoats/crinolines, but some really do. It is best to have a consultation with your seamstress/alterationist before purchasing undergarments you may not need.

I understand the concept of upselling. I wasn;t truly blaming the consultant. I just wanted other brides to be aware that just because the consultant tries to sell, doesn't mean you need to buy. I agree! A consultation with a seasmtress prior to buying the undergarments is ideal Smiley smile

I remember that horrible strapless bra thing the DB consultant told me I had to have along with the slip. It couldn't support my girls, didn't fit right, and if I'm spending hundreds of dollars on a dress I expect it to have all the support I need.
