Brides who had a civil ceremony & a wedding...what did you wear?

* Gin, on November 5, 2011 at 12:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

We live in Germany (as most of you know)...were having a civil ceremony here next month and planning our wedding in the States for Spring 2013. We are not doing anything special for our civil ceremony, no party afterwards ect. We want all of that to be at our wedding when we are with our family and friends. However, we are having a photographer to capture it and then do some pics of us throughout the city so we can utilize the pics at our wedding for everyone to be a part of everything. I do not want a wedding dress for the civil ceremony, but unsure what I should wear? What did you wear? I was thinking an ivory lace style dress (haven't found one yet though) and some nice heels and I will carry a small bouquet. But would another color dress be okay too, it seems so hard to find an ivory dress that's not a wedding dress in Germany in winter months.

Advice, help and inspiration appreciated!

What about an ivory suit (fancy cocktail suit)?

This is the dress I wore to my civil ceremony. I didn't bring any flowers, I think it would have been more of an inconvenience if I had. It was nice to be able to hold my FH's hands through the ceremony Smiley smile

I really like that dress Kiela- I was wondering if it would be okay to wear something in non traditional colors and you did, so why not? I never thought about that with the flowers, probably best. Would you mind if I PM'd you some questions since I don't really know many brides who have had a civil and still planning a wedding? Thanks!

Check out H&M! I was just looking at the American site (because I don't speak German) and they had this dress: http://www.hm.com/us/product/94707?article=94707-A which is ivory, lacy and long-sleeve! Perfect for a cold winter civil ceremony. They also had some silver or gold dresses, but they looked a bit too cocktail dress to me. You can also check out Zara... I'm trying to think of other stores that are in Germany too...

Thank you Shana! I love this dress actually. I went to H&M and Zara today and they didn't have this dress or anything in ivory, I will check out the website Smiley smile

That is a beautiful dress. I've done many civil ceremonies in Central Park, and my brides have worn everything from full out wedding gowns to suits to cool dresses like that one. I have also been in the NYC clerks office (where they do weddings on site) and there is also the whole gamut from gowns to suits to sundresses.

So do I , my concern is that I am only 5'3 so it may be too long for me. What do you think?

    Shanna, I looove that dress!

Ginny, I think the dress may fall below the knees on you. Because of the 3/4 inch sleeves, the 3/4 leg length on you may look a bit off (with a 3/4 sleeve length, it either needs to be above the knee, or fall past your ankle).

Maybe you could hike it up at the waist if you cinched it with a belt?

Ginny, I love the idea of doing a photo shoot around the city! For my civil ceremony I wore this dress. i will say once the ceremony is done it takes a small load off because you can't really get "cold feet" Smiley smile

I wore this dress to ours. I really wanted something white, but I was 8.5 months pregnant and it was the middle of winter (like it is with you), so I had extremely limited choices.

Hi Ginny -- I got a white dress on sale at Dillards (not sure it's nationwide, but maybe equivalent to a Kaufmans). How has your luck been ordering from the US online - if you've done it?

We're doing our civil ceremony next month too Smiley smile getting excited!

We're doing ours in two weeks and I'm going to wear a black skirt and nice dress shirt. I think that something that is nice and comfortable should be good Smiley smile
