Blanket Seating for Ceremony?

Fireworks WIFE, on February 7, 2013 at 12:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36

Okay, I just went through tons of old post on here about standing ceremonies and how badly they are reacted to, that is NOT what I'm saying here.. my idea is blanket/picnic style seating. This is not my only option and if you all think its an awful idea I'll nix the idea.

I saw this picture (below) and my heart did a little flutter. How precious is that set up? I know that for a formal event this is a big no-no (dresses and grass stains and highheels oh my!) But my event is on the 4th of July, reception is a Lobster Boil/claim bake - eat with your hands and drip butter, wear whatever you feel like event. Could this work for me in my situation? My first thought was I could have a little picnic basket at each blanket with some old fashion glass pop bottles, or maybe we'd bottle our own drinks? And then watermelon on a stick maybe.. just to get the theme involved.. I really like the idea but don't want to get caught up in the cuteness and be ridiculous - Opinions?

I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea.

Im a huge fan of relaxed, fun type of ceremonies and receptions so your's sounds like a dream to me Smiley laugh

I would suggest maybe throwing some seating pillows on the blankets for the ladies (sitting cross-legged in a dress might be tricky)

This is so adorable and unique! I love it! I agree with Rayne, I would have a few pillows for the ladies and the elderly, maybe even a few cute chairs in the back row, just in case one of your guests isnt comfortable sitting on a blankets.

Love the idea of old bottles and beverages, you should put those cute paper striped straws in the bottles too, I think you should totally do this!

Love your theme and I think this ties right in. I've also seen bails of hay used for seating, same idea, cover with blankets for casual seating.

Your menu sounds awesome, my mouth is watering!

This is a fantastic idea! It really matches your theme and I love how casual and comfy it is. I would definitely have some pillows around and optional chairs for any elderly or those who get super uncomfortable on the ground.

I LOVE this! Sounds perfect for your vision. I definitely prefer the first picture where there are defined rows of blankets, I think the second picture looks a little too cluttered for my taste. Rows of blankets would also allow you to have a defined aisle to walk down, if that's important to you! Either way, sounds like a very unique idea and great for a 4th of July wedding.

Seconding the suggestion to put a few chairs in the back! Either for older/disabled guests, or for women who may have opted for a shorter dress Smiley smile

Love it! And your ideas to embellish.

Ive been looking for picnic baskets, too . . . what have you found? The ones Ive seen seem to cost more than I think they're worth. I could see this possibly becoming an issue for you if you have to get several ?? Of course this is one of my "watch for" items every time I go to a thrift store.

That is so precious!! I love love love ceremonies that are a little off beat from the norm. The little drink & snacks would pull the whole theme together as well!

WOW! I love that idea and it goes great with your theme! I think it's perfect! And like you said, maybe a few chairs for those that are not able to sit like the elderly or bad backs, etc. LOVE IT!!!! And I love your idea of the picnic baskets with little items...it will be adorable and unique!!! GREAT JOB!

I think its cute and that touch of creativity that makes a wedding stand out Smiley smile As long as all of your guests are ABLE-bodied and you inform everyone of the casualness of the wedding all should be well Smiley smile I agree though I like the pic with the more defined rows

I think it depends on your guests. Our parents have major issues getting up and down from the ground and they of course don't want to be in chairs at the back...

YAY! Omg you should see my face right now, so happy that this is well received

As for pillows great idea, maybe I could even find some big ones, more like couch cushions, adding to my list!

As for the baskets, I will just be looking for them while thrifting until it gets close enough if I don't have enough I know target usually gets a ton right at the beginning of summer

Yes for the ceremony only! I couldnt image eating a steam pot meal in the ground Smiley smile

Do you think if I do the blankets in the rows the people in the back will have a hard time seeing? The ground is flat, no hill

Love it but you might want to have some chairs at the back or along the side for anyone older, I know some of my 60+ aunts or grandma would have a problem getting down and up, they even have a tough time with low chairs.

Bridgit had a good one with bails of hay, but bails of hay are not cheap, but you could prob borrow a few from a farmer if you can transport them and have 4 or 6 for those few people who need them. Otherwise a few white wood chairs.

I love this idea, my only suggestion is to have a different snack available, watermelon can be very messy and people may wind up with sticky hands and no place to wash them, or have wet wipes available in the picnic baskets as well, bees also love watermelon and in the middle of summer may become a nuisance with sweet fruit around... Just a thought

    LOVE IT!!

Hiker Bride had a good point about finding enough picnic baskets. Maybe they don't all have to be "picnic" baskets. Hit up thrift stores and garage sales for different types of baskets that would serve the purpose. They wouldn't all need to match. Smiley smile
