Beer,beer,beer

Alissa , on February 11, 2013 at 1:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

Ok so for my alchol using WW friends, what are you using? Kegs or cans? Also, if you are buying cans, how are you buying it? 2 30 packs a week or what? I am trying to figure out where to store all this beer and if it will stay fresh until May. Does anyone know where to get beer at a wholesale price?

LOL Beer lasts pretty long. You don't necessarily want to buy it as you go. you would want to purchase it the day of/day before. Depending on where your wedding is there are liquor laws about how much you can have and if you need a liquor licence.

Ok Im an ex beer sales rep. When 30 pks are on sale at say walmart or rite aid for 16.99 or 17.99 it is a better deal to buy can than kegs. Your cost per beer out of a keg is approx $1. 08 a cup. (prices may vary this is ca pricing but I assume its similar) Depending on your venue you may not want a bunch of cans all over the place? but on the upside you can recycle them Smiley smile And beer stays fresh approx 3 months for domestic beers (coors/bud) and more like 6 months for micro brews. If you buy it early you want to keep it in a cool dark place and it will stay good longer, dont put it in a place that the sun can hit it or it will go bad faster than those time frames I gave you. Hope this helps Smiley smile)

Wow, thanks for the awesome info Amber! In my little podunk town we have a stateline in between our city. We can buy beer on the Arkansas side but not the texas side. I havent thought about the sale beer at walmart! I will have to take advantage of that for sure. For other alcohol stores we only have locally owned ones so unfortunatly they dont have any discount cards. I may can talk to the owner and let him know how much I am wanting to buy and just see if he will give me a discount. I was more excited about cans than kegs because I want to make some cute little koozies as favors! Thanks ladies!

Yes just go to a place that sells kegs and ask them the cost of their kegs. you get about 120 16 oz beers or about 150 12 oz beers give or take (foam, spilliage etc) so then take the price divide it up and see whats the better deal.. People always think kegs are cheaper, which they are if your buying from a liquor store. But if you buy at somewhere like walmart its almost always cheapter to go with cans. When is your wedding? if its later in the summer its your best bet to buy on weekends like labor day memorial or 4th of july weekends because they are ALWAYS the best sales.

We're doing bottles and we'll probably get them from Total Wine & Beverage. They have good prices around here (Northern Virginia).

Karen, I thought about bottles, too, since we're having glass bottle cokes at our wedding anyway. A new Shiner (Texas) beer came out, and we're in love with it, so I need to start shopping around!

I personally don't like canned beer (Don't much like canned coke, either) and I'm not sure if they have the new variety in keg form, yet.

My MOH suggested Costco for beer, wine and liquor.

We did bottles. I personally wouldn't do cans unless your wedding is super casual but that's just me.

Check the liquor laws in your state/province - we were able to return anything that was unopened and still part of its original case. So bottles made more sense than a keg and saved us a ton of cash. You can't return half a keg. Smiley smile

We ordered our booze from Binny's, which is a big chain liquor store in Chicago. We used them b/c their prices were competitive, and they delivered the day of our wedding straight to the venue. Honestly - pricing was VERY similar to Costco and we got the added convenience of just placing our order in an email and doing no other work.

I think we were supposed to return the unused booze ourselves but somehow it was done for us - IDK if Binny's came to pick it up or if our bartending company or caterer dropped it off for us. We tipped our bartenders super well, so they might have been the ones to help us out. Smiley smile

We served bottles (I personally don't like drinking out of cans) and we bought cases at Costco and sales at grocery stores. We were able to return unopened cases at Costco.

We bought our liquor from Costco too and our wine from Bev Mo during their $0.5 sales.

Great thread - I was assuming we would do a keg - but I might switch it up and do cans/bottles now.

I would also ask your venue which you can do - I remember some said no cans/bottles. Also as beer has to be served Cold - how will you get the Mountains Blue, so to speak. If using an ice chest - you will need one large enough and don't forget the cost of ice. If in a frig - is there room?

We're doing kegs because all the alcohol is provided through our venue and they were way cheaper.

Yeah, I wanted to do the bottles too but I didnt know about it because I was scared that we would have broken glass all over the place. We are getting married in a barn (fancy barn) lol so we will be storing the beer in big metal water trough. I am going to start watching the walmart ads and waiting for them to go on sale! Unfourtunatly we dont have a costco and our SAMs club is on the Texas side which is a dry county on that side of the city.

Going along with Amber, a cool dark place where the temperature does not change. If you have changing temps, it changes the properties of the beer and then it will taste like...not good.

LOL. There are a lot of dry counties in Texas!! LOL!! The city voted on it a couple months ago but it didnt pass. I dont see why because you can drive to the arkansas side in 5 minutes and be at a liquor store! LOL
