Bachelorette party for a bride who doesn't want one AND I have to plan it. Seriously?!

Heather, on April 19, 2015 at 1:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Hello all! The women in my family have been pressuring me into having a bridal shower and/or bachelorette party. My fiance and I decided that we do not want to have a shower because we are pretty well established and do not want our loved ones and guests buying us gifts. Also, we are having a destination wedding so we already feel honored that they will be traveling to join us. Even after explaining all of this to the women in my family, they are still putting on the pressure for a shower/party.

Well, I have finally given in to their requests and agreed to have a bachelorette party. And now they are expecting ME to plan and organize everything! What bride wants to throw their own bachelorette party? Especially one who didn't want to do it in the first place!

Have any of you experienced this or something similar with your planning? It is driving me crazy!

Talk to @pancakes. She was in a similar situation and let me tell you it didnt sound pretty... if you dont want one dont let your family pressure you into having one. Its YOUR wedding not theirs

^^^Ditto. If they're pressuring you, they can plan it. If they don't want to, screw it lol.

Nope nope nope. That's ridiculous. And it's rude to host your own party, where you would be the guest of honor.

"I am not concerned about having a shower or bachelorette party. If someone offers to host a bach for me, of course I would be honored. But I am not expecting one or planning one." If someone gets huffy that you aren't organizing your own bach, just tell them you don't want to.

Don't do it. One you aren't supposed to plan it for yourself and two you don't even want it! Stand up for yourself. To me it sounds like they want an excuse to party but don't want the hassle of planning one themselves.

Wow that's a lot of nerve to pressure you into agreeing to a party and then wanting you to plan it too! I agree with the reply Sara suggested.

I wasn't going to have one and then one of my BMs said I should. I decided on having a Bachelorette party because I don't want to have a Bridal Party. I am helping plan it out...but I enjoy it. Im sorry you're in that kind of situation, though...

Thank you for the support and understanding! I don't even know why I am surprised by this at all. This is definitely considered normal behavior from them. The only reason I agreed to it is because I figured it would be easier going along with it rather than hearing them complain about not having one after the fact.

I am not the kind of person who is afraid to speak my mind, and I have spoken up already. It's more like pick your battles, you know?

Tell them if they want it, they have to plan it. Done. If you don't want it, and they don't want to plan it then it just wont happen.

Hahaha tell them to meet at your favorite bar for Happy Hour, if that isn't a good enough plan they need to do it!

If they're expecting you to plan, then "plan" it. When they ask about it, just let them know plans are in the works and you will be sending out invitations soon.

You shouldn't have to plan it. You have enough on your plates as it is. If they want you to have one then they should plan. If they don't want to plan it then oh well. I agree with Erica and Brian.

We're in the same situation - more established, in need of nothing and having a destination wedfing. My MOH. And a couple other friends insisted on throwing a shower; so we compromised. It was a combo shower-bachelorette party, open house style on an early Saturday evening (6-9pm) in a party room of one of our favourite local pubs. We had a cake, snacks, a cash bar and lots of laughs. MOH and friends insisted on setting up a card box for anyone who wanted to contribute to our honeymoon fund. I was against this; but people gave anyway. I was sort of floored by people's generosity.

You don't want to have it and they don't want to plan it.

Seems like an answer right there.....

Completely agree with LivelyBride - why did you say yes? The ball is in YOUR court with this one.

I'm on the same page as Athena. I have picked a date and time, and my favorite place which happens to be a dueling piano bar. After that it's up to them. And if they don't show up then I'll have a kick ass time anyway!

This sounds like a self-resolving problem. You don't want a party, and it's your job to plan the party.

So if you simply don't plan it - TA-DA!
