Are kegs tacky?

Kathleen, on June 25, 2011 at 6:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

We're going to be having a semi-formal wedding in the evening with drinks, dinner, and dancing. My reception venue offers kegs (at $300 for about 200 servings) or bottle of domestic beer for $3 a bottle. Obviously, the keg is cheaper. And the catering coordinator said many brides choose the keg and she doesn't see any issue with it (which I originally thought was kind of strange, since it meant they would be getting less money). My mother, however, thinks this is totally tacky, especially for the formality of the event. What does everyone else think?

I think if the keg is served from behind a bar or from an out of the way corner, that is fine; but if it is stuck in the middle of the room as the center of attention, it could look a bit informal.

Actually, my bartender suggested kegs instaed of bottles because they are cheaper. At first, I was thinking it was kinda tacky. Then I thought about it. It will be behind the bar and the bartender will be pouring it into the glasses for them. It won't be any different than any other bar. Even at some of the classiest restaurants and clubs that I've been to, they have had kegs at the bar. I really don't think it's tacky at all as long as it is served at the bar and not just sitting out somewhere.

I think it would be totally fine. I mean if you set it out of the way it won't take away from the setting or style and most people aren't going to even notice the keg.

We are doing a couple kegs for our wedding. It's an outdoor semi-formal event as well.

That's a good point. I didn't ask the catering coordinator how it was going to be served, I guess I just assumed it would be from behind the bar like the other alcohol. I will ask.

Most of the time you won't even see the Kegs. Venues understand weddings are not "keg parties" and all the ones I've been to do a very good job of keeping the keg itself lowkey....I personally have opted to order two kegs through my venue, it just makes more sense financially

Thanks everyone! I guess I just associated kegs with drunken, crazy frat parties. LOL

I would suggest expressing your concern to your caterer, I'm sure once they explain how they would set it up you'll feel better. Smiley smile

Yep, they can usually hide them somewhat..and I think if a few people perceive it as tacky, well then they can buy their own damn drinks elsewhere than getting yours for free :-P lol.

I agree with others, if it's hidden, it's that much better. However, depending on your atmosphere, and the likings of your guest, it will or could still be acceptable.

The bar at our venue uses kegs, but they are behind the bar and the bartender will be serving it. Now, if it was like a keg at a college frat party, just sitting out for guests to serve themselves, that would be tacky IMO.

I went to a formal party (a fundraiser, not a wedding) where the bartender was serving from a keg, and I thought it a nice, easy vibe to what was otherwise a very uppity event.

Kegs are not tacky at a wedding. It will be behind the bar anyway.

They told you 200 servings out of a keg? How many ounces in a serving, at your venue? That seems pretty high.

Just looked up the stats on kegs...if your servings are 12 ounces, you will get approx 165 servings. The keg is still far less expensive than bottles.

Kegs are perfect... it allows you to serve beer yet cut a few corners on the price. My fh best man is buying 2 kegs for our wedding. i would go for it

I used to waitress/bartend weddings& 9 out of 10 people choose kegs. Its much cheaper& I'm sure they'll have it hidden behind the bar. Now that I'm planning my wedding I'm going to get a few kegs& if my guests gave the nerve to complain about the free alcohol then they can pay for their own. Just saying.

Oh&a friend of mine had a "keg trailer" delivered to his wedding.... six kegs inside. definitly fit their country wedding, but would kill the hubbs if he even thinks about it!

@Kathy: it wasn't quite 200 (I think she said like 190 or something) and I don't remember how many ounces, but like you said, it will still be cheaper.

As long as it's behind the bar and not a "free for all," i think we'll be going with the kegs! thanks everyone!

I prefer beer from kegs anyway, in my circle we don't drink a beer out of a bottle or can and always pour it into a glass anyway. I find it interesting that people think kegs are tacky.
