My reception venue offers kegs (at $300 for about 200 servings) or bottle of domestic beer for $3 a bottle. Obviously, the keg is cheaper. And the catering coordinator said many brides choose the keg and she doesn't see any issue with it (which I originally thought was kind of strange, since it meant they would be getting less money). My mother, however, thinks this is totally tacky, especially for the formality of the event. What does everyone else think?

I am not a big beer drinker...I do live in Portland, so we have great micro brews, but, I would say that with beer, I would drink it from a tap (keg) or a bottle. NEVER a can. I do not like canned anything.

@Kathy: since I'm alcohol impaired (I'm not a drinker at all...lol) can you tell me what micro brew is? I've heard it before, but not sure what it means. and, it would definitely be from a bottle or a keg. not a can. ew gross. lol

I've always considered cans tacky. Bottles are sort of ok, but it looks nicer to have drinks out of glasses vs. cans (or bottles) with beer labels sitting around at the tables. picture yourself in guests photos with a bottle of beer in hand, now think of a clear cup, with "something" understatedly in it. IMO I'd never use bottles or cans.

Microbrews are handcrafted beers made by smaller producers. They have far more favor and character than mass produced beers.

I agree, I don't think they'll be tacky at a wedding, as long as nobody pulls one out from behind the bar & start doing keg stands! lol

Funny you say that Mikesgirl...we had a keg at our wedding. Our reception started at 4 and by 10 the party was still going. Most of the older crowd had gone by then but my Dad was there and all the younger crowd dancing it up. I turned around and saw my new little brother's buddy (who is about 6'4" and 300 pound football player) doing a keg stand right next to my dad! I was in shock but it was fine they were just having fun and I think my dad didn't know what to say - he has probably never seen a keg stand before! It was something I will never forget.

But main point - I think a keg is fine and like PP said, if it is a formal event just make sure it stays behind the bar!

I don't think its tacky at all. I've been to a wedding that had some bottles of stronger beer for people who are beer snobs and then kegs of classic beers like bud light and budweiser for the majority. The bottled beer they had ran out so quickly but no one really cared. They were just happy to have any beer at all. Oh yea.. and at the end of the night when there were just a few close family members left.. they did keg stands and it was hilarious! My FH's family is kinda wild and definitely not uptight!

If guests have to serve themselves out of a keg that is super tacky. If the bartender is serving it, its ok.
