Anyone heard of this for the garter toss?

Texaschic, on March 26, 2010 at 3:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 57

So I have a friend who is in an arguement with his fiance over the garter toss so he asked me to see what others thought. According to the girl, the garter toss consists of the bride sitting on the best man's lap. Has anyone ever heard of this? I personally think it's very strange and could make the best man feel uncomfortable.

I have seen it where the best man gets on his hands and knees and the bride sits on his back.

Yeah theres also a wedding myth that if people start clinking their glasses, and the groom isnt around, the bride has to KISS the best man! i think some trampy bride who had a crush on the best man just made these up! i would NEVER kiss fh's best man, or sit on his lap. hes married and im not in the least interested in him so it would be majorly awkward!

I have very rarely heard of them sitting on the best mans back but certainly not on their lap. I would feel creeped out even sitting on the best mans back

My mom sat in the best man's lap for the garter toss when she got married. But it was a little different since the best man was her brother. That's the only time I've actually heard of someone I know following that tradition.

I have always seen the bide either sitting in a chair when the garter is removed or she has one leg propped up on a chair. I think that's just weird to be sitting on another man's lap. Personally I would find it at least a little weird. The best man is an old friend of our and he used to be a roommate of both fh's and mine, and I have sat on his lap before, but I would feel weird doing it in front of his girlfriend and with all of my and fh's family around.

That's the strangest thing I've ever heard. That would be a NO go for me! No way I'd sit in my FBIL's lap! YUCK!!!!

I've never heard of sitting on the best man's lap or back... that seems so insulting to the groom... FH's best man is a good guy and everything, but NOPE!

Wait...she's sitting on the best man's lap while her hubby is going below to REMOVE the garter?? or she's sitting on his lap while the other guys try to catch the garter being thrown by hubby?? Isn't the best man included in the catching group if he's not married? I'm confused. Either way....it's creepy and inappropriate in my book.

Hell no! I've never heard that. the only thing somewhat similar I've heard is that a friend of mine, when she got married... They blindfolded the groom and were making him crawl across the dance floor to try n find her to take off the garter, well while he was searchin around, her uncle came up and put her on his lap and he hiked up his pant leg, and then her cousin (male) sat on the uncles lap, and put her on HIS lap... So when the groom finally came over.. He felt a few quite hairy legs first and got freaked out and ripped the blindfold off to see what the heck was going on lol.

For clarification: She would be sitting on the best man while the groom removes it

Eh, that would just be too weird for me, considering the best man is my FBIL and he's 17. Ew, awkward. Anyway, agreed about the trampy bride.
