Hellllll no i wouldnt do that.. i mean, first of all, the best man is DH's brother whom i've only met once (we're in NY and he's in FL) and on top of that, even if it was someone I knew really well, i still would be really uncomfortable with that. Do you think it's some stipulation put in place so that the best man will never be the one to catch the garter? Because maybe he's "too close" to the groom to be put in that position??? idk, thats crazy.

I think it just depends on how well you know the best man and how comfortable you are. its just half a second anyway...

Thanks for posting the links Mrs. Girlinghouse. After reading them I do remember seeing a couple of brides sit on the best man's knee.. but never the lap. I think the knee would be alright and not weird. But lap is a little much. Why not sit in the chair that the best man is sitting in? the knee I understand because he is kneeling and not sitting in a chair. And I agree it really depends on the relationships between the couple and the best man.

no prob. i guess I never really thought of it as the knee versus the lap. I kinda just thought of it all as the lap. after hearing all these ladies responses though I decided I'm not doing it....it wasn't something I was set on I just assumed that's how it was suppose to be but I'm sure people at the wedding might have the same type of opinions as these ladies.

NEVER heard of this before, I wouldn't do it the BM is FH's brother, and he's married. I think that would piss off a lot of people.

They do that here in WI. Actually EVERY wedding I have been to has been the bride sitting on the lap of the bestman. I did for my first wedding and was uncomfortable. So... this wedding.... give me a chair please!

Every garter toss I've ever seen was with the bride sitting in a chair. and the groom getting the garter.

I personally think it's a little tacky, and a little unnecesary. Just hand over the garter, and toss it.

Allow me to offer an alternative that I offer my couples during the planning sessions concerning the garter removal. I actually got the idea from a photog friend. THIS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE COUPLE WAY BEFORE HAND! The idea is to have ALL the groomsmen come to the dance floor and to kneel and put their raised knees together to make a "seat" for the bride. Notice I said "knees" - not lap. The bride then sits on the knees of the groomsmen and the groom is instructed to "assume the position". The thought process here is to include ALL the groomsmen in the picture being taken by the photog. Again, this is only an "alternative" to the traditional garter removal and MUST BE APPROVED BY THE COUPLE DURING PLANNING SESSIONS. I always give the couple the option of backing out at the last minute if they aren't comfortable with it and doing things the tried and true traditional way.

The problem with the garter toss is that no-one really knows what the "tried and true traditional way" really is: probably because it's a made-up tradition. Back in the sixties it was a fun and novel thing to do to give the groom something equivalent to the bride's bouquet-toss. In those days the couple left for their honeymoon straight from the reception, so they changed (separately and in private) into "going away" clothes just before they left. When the bride came out, she would *hand* the garter to the groom who would then toss it. Throwing underwear around in public was "naughty" enough for those tame days, that groping around under the bride's dress while the DJ played bump-and-grind wasn't necessary. I didn't hear of that until the eighties, when folk were getting less interested in going-away because they'd already been living together in secret. Nowadays no-one gets titillated without the groom's teeth being involved, or a lap-dance going on, so we see these new notions!

I must be a trampy bride too bc i plan on doing this at our wedding and my future husband and his best man are completely okay with it i guess i see where yall are coming from but it wouldnt be awkward in our case bc weve all known one another so long and know that theres nothing more to it than just for fun and tradition but the kissing thing is just ridiculous

I have seen this at almost all of the weddings i have been to. its more of a humorous thing if its a younger couple. i will be doing this at my wedding, and it would only make the best man uncomfortable if he didn't know you two very well, but seeing as he is the best man, he should know you the best.

Yes. I’ve only seen this done at weddings, I’ve never seen it another way.
