Anyone have their wedding band custom made?

*~WiiFeY~*, on January 6, 2011 at 1:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

I'm still having a hard time finding a band that fits together well with my ring. The band at kay that supposedly goes with it, doesn't really fit as well as I would like, and they slide all over the place. (I have a peekaboo diamond on either side which makes a huge gap between my e ring and a regular band- so I need a curved band.)

So a girl came into work the other day with a peekaboo diamond and we started discussing her band. She said she had it custom made and it cost her about $800. It was a fairly simple yellow gold band with a couple diamonds up front that framed the main diamond in her 3 stone ring. Soo.. I mentioned it to FS and he said that sounded good to him.

We were at a mall with a Jarrod nearby, so we went in on a whim. I tried on a couple of the bands they had there, still no luck. So I asked them about custom making one and she said that its going to be the most expensive thing we do, (cont)

And could end up being twice the price of my e-ring, if not more, because its labor intensive. So then I called a local jeweler that made the girl at work's ring (she gave me his info) and he said the whole double-the-price-of-my-e-ring thing wasn't true.

So now I'm wondering- is Jarrod just trying to make more money, or is this local jeweler just not very good? The girl's ring was pretty and she seemed happy with it, but its weird that 2 different places are saying the same thing.

So did any of you ladies get your bands custom made? Was it super expensive?

Also- I'm 5 months out. Should I get started on that now?

Oh and I'm attaching a pic of my ring's peekaboo diamond.

My rings are all custom- all 3. Yes, Jerrod's is ripping you off. They are a chain, and they like to stock all the rings at all their stores the same. To make something custom is HARD for them, and probably outsourced. DO NOT order from them, it will probably also be lower quality.

You should go to the "family" jeweler. Since that is their specialty, it's no trouble for them. You will have a much more personal experience and get a better quality ring and a fair price. YES! Get going! You will need a couple months, at least.

My wedding band will be custom made. We want it to match the top part of my ring (see the picture to the left). A very respectable local jeweler quoted us $1K for the ring, which I didn't think was unreasonable given the price of gold is so high right now.

We had my husband's ring custom made at Jared, it wasn't much more expensive than him just picking one out. He is picky and didn't find one there that he loved, so he custom designed his own....which includes 4 diamonds. And his was about half the price of my engagement ring.

KK, I had the exact same issue with my band.

I have the same small diamonds underneath the large middle stone as yours.

No band would fit right with it. So yes, we had to get my two bands custom made

The designer actually sketched out my e ring, then drew a picture of the band he could make . The pictures show exactly how good of a job he did..

The E ring is 1 carat and is platinum, almost 8 thousand dollars

The two bands ended up costing a little under 7 thousand.

What the jeweler did was create the stones on the band to be low rise, so that they hug the peek a boo diamond on the E ring

Okay thank you all so much! I was just afraid that since that guy was doing it for a lot less than other stores that the quality wouldn't be as good. But I guess its the opposite Smiley smile Thanks!

My ring has peekaboo diamonds on both sides. With a regular wedding band only the very bottom of my peekaboo is covered, from the top you can't see them anyway and if I want a better view of the peekaboo diamond, I just look at the front of my ring (the side without the band). Since the wedding band is worn first, when you hold out your hand for someone to see, they'll still be seeing the front of your engagement ring with the unblocked view of your peekaboo. I personally wouldn't spend the extra cash on a custom made ring.

Konichiwa- Its not about hiding it. The rings don't fit together at all. Its a gap between the two which makes them slide all over my finger.

My E-ring was custom made as well by a local jeweler. In fact, that's basically all they do. They walked my FH through every step of the way of the creation and created molds, sketches, etc. My ring appraises at 25K and he paid considerably less. We will also be having them make our bands. Don't let the price fool you. Those big chain jewelers sell mass-produced pieces and their employees are not emotionally invested in the company the way a local jeweler is. By the time my ring was ready my FH had developed a good relationship with them and we'll always go back there.

My e ring is a Tacori, but I do not like the wedding band that matches the e ring. So the jeweler is making my band to be similar, but it will have the features I want. I am very excited. My e ring is 1 1/2 c, so it was extremely expensive. The wedding band have diamonds all around the band, but is still cheaper than the Tacori wedding band that matches the e ring.

My wedding band was custom made by my family's preferred jeweler. He took my E-ring for about two weeks and made a wax model of the wedding band so I could see it before they made it. My E-ring has filigree details on the sides and I didn't want those covered up (much like your peekaboo diamond) so he put a little "dip" in the middle. He managed to match up the texture perfectly! I brought in four diamond chips that belonged to my deceased older brother, and he put those into my ring. So I can't say how much it would have cost if I'd bought the diamonds, but we ended up spending $200 for a custom-made white gold ring...I think we got a bargain!

Crap, you can't really see from that...here's a closeup. It's white gold, the colors in the photo are just really warm.

I am going to be having mine custom made, I am meeting with some jewelers this weekend. My ring is an odd shape too. I can't even envision what my band might look like.

I was having a similar problem finding a band for my e-ring, since it's curved (pic 1) and I wanted to get a wrap or enhancer ring for it, but they were all super expensive. I just wanted plain bands so I went to a local jeweler around here and he said it's not hard to do but it's the gold that would be the main cost, he quoted me a little over a hundred and fifty

I have the same problem...the Scott Kay band that supposedly goes with my ring doesn't match at all...the diamonds arent even the same shape!!! But a local jeweler will giveyou a much better price than any retail chain, thats what i'm doing. In fact, I will actually be in the Cayman Islands later this month and am saving a ton of money by buying the loose diamonds for the rings down there.

My ring is a custom ring and very round in the middle. The family jeweler in town made the ring and I actually have to drop my ring off this week. He needs to have it for about 3 weeks so he can make a mold out of a special material and then he will create a band that will fit the ring. It will be about 1,000, but I also live in an area where things are a little higher. My wedding is before your and he has plenty of time, but I definitely recommend going to a family jeweler because they actually make pieces. The people at the chain stores don't actually make any jewelry themselves so I think it would be hard to believe them.

My ring is Victorian and was FH's great great grandmothers. I am having a custom band made. We took it to several jewelery makers and after several tries we found an older man who's eyes lit up when he saw the ring. He made a few sketches and explained his vision for it. We loved it and he is making it now. It is costing us $1100 here in Australia. That includes the 6 small diamonds that will be in the band for sparkle.
