ALL of My Bridesmaids Dresses Are Too Big...I Have A Right To Be Mad...Right? *UPDATE IN COMMENTS, PG. 1*

Candice B., on June 11, 2013 at 3:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

Long story short...my MOHs and BMs all had to argue with the sales associate on what size to order their dresses. The sales associate gave them the whole "wedding dress/bridesmaids dress sizes are different than regular street sizes..." blah blah blah....which I get. But, ordering a size larger would be sufficient..MAAAYBE even 2 sizes. But 4-5 FREAKIN SIZES TOO BIG! Come on!

One of my MOHs is a street size 0, so she told the associate to order her the smallest size the dress comes in. The associate "argued" and convinced her that she should get a SIZE 4!! And she convinced my 2 bridesmaids to order a SIZE 16, when they are usually a size 8-12 (if that)!

Now they are trying to charge my girls upwards of $100 for alterations...but it was the bridal shops fault!! I think they did it on purpose to get the alterations money. So I'm going with my MOH Wed. to talk to them directly, because that is not ok.

I have a right to be upset, right?

Yep. I'm pretty sure some places do that for alterations purposes as well.

They didn't even measure them? OR ask for measurements?? Did they try on the dresses there? How would they not know what size to get if your Size 0 friend found the trial dress to be too big?

I am asking!! What shop is this???

I'd be furious especially if I was trying to argue them about it from the beginning!

Absolutely! I don't think I could hold my tongue if that were to happen to me. I'd likely call them out on it, but yes, it's obvious they do these things to get more money out of you...which is disgusting!!

@Paris - I hate that!! One of my pet peeves is businesses trying to take advantage of it's customers, especially when the customer is giving them great business.

That is terrible! I think some shops do this so you HAVE to pay for alterations. I hope you work everything out with them.

Um this happened to me, now I am not a tiny girl but when I was in a wedding last May I went and got sized by the store and she told me I was a size 22... HOLD THE PHONE what... and I had to pay $50 extra... embarrassed and confused I ordered the dress because I have no choice .... after I told the woman that I wear a 14 normally.

Well my dress came in and I went in (the bride and another BM were in the same room as me) and I was hold it to zip it up and I let go and the dress fell to the floor... the owner of the shop came in to pin me and I told her and she looked at me and said" well you must have lost weight I said no I actually gained (from the time I was measured to the time it came in my dad had passed so I did nothing but eat)

She had to take it down to a "12" When I went to pick up the dress the weekend of the wedding now TOO small where no one would do anything I had to literally be sucked/zipped etc into this dress...I went to pay the amount left and they CONT

@OTW - They measured both of my MOHs in the store. The other 2 were out of town, so they called in with their measurements and they "recommended" a size for them based on their measurements. When all of them told them that they didn't think that was right, they gave the the "street size/wedding dress size" speel and told them they know how these particular dress sizes for the designer run. blah blah blah...and convinced them to get bigger sizes.

@Brittany - I can't hold my tongue on this one! Even the seamstress was surprised at how big my girls' dresses were compared to their actual size.

@Reenski - Yes! I just can't hold back on this one. That's not cool.

Me it was $200 for the alternations since so much had to be fixed, I threw the biggest bitch fit in public I have ever done, and I told them they would be taking the $50 off.... I HATE STORES like this and I made the bride call and bitch because they weren't going to let me take my dress..

If i were you I would be pissed and throwing a fit... your girls should not pay that! Shame on people like this!

@Soon2beMrs.K - Woooow!! That really irks me that they would do that! I'm usually not a confrontational person, but I will definitely being going in there Wed. and giving them a piece of my mind!

Their dresses were already more than I wanted them to pay (even though they were perfectly fine with spending more), but to add that much in alterations is ridiculous for a bridesmaid dress. Their dresses were already almost $200!

Candice either am I but I was so fed up with this shop at that point and then try to tell me I can't take my dress... OH NO... and I could hear the bride on the phone, because the other BM"s just paid to get their dresses but all went an complained to her.

And then what set me over was they made it too small and then wanted me to pay extra... NOPE lol

Goes raise heck!! I'll support you Smiley smile

    ***UPDATE***

So, we expressed our concerns about the dress sizes and the ridiculous amount and price of alterations (very professionally), but unforntunately the sales associate did nothing for us...yet. She basically placed the blame on my girls saying that they could have changed their sizes when the confirmation email was sent before the order was made.

So, it ended with my cousin/MOH getting the contact information for the owner, to have a discussion with her about the situation. (My MOH wanted to handle it, to keep me at ease...so nice). I wish I could have my girls get alterations elsewhere, but we called around to a few places (and even asked the bridal shop where I purchased my dress) to ask could they do the alterations, but since it's busy season, and most places only have 1-2 seamstresses, they can't accomodate us.

So, more to come on this....I'm so disaapointed in this bridal shop.

    That is so disappointing.

Why would your girls change the sizes? A PROFESSIONAL measured and then recommended those sizes. The average person doesn't know how a shop's sizes run and you don't want to take a chance.

I guess this is Customer Service 2.0. UGH.

@Paris - That's EXACTLY what we said, over and over. All we are asking for is a reduced price for alterations. I can see if we were like "No, it's your mistake, alterations should be free.", which is what my MOH originally wanted. So, I'm think I'm being more than reasonable.

Hmm, my family owns a bridal shop so I want to provide that perspective I'm not saying you're wrong but: Sizes do run very differently on these dreses. When they take measurements, they aren't guessing the sizes, they are going off a size chart provided by the factory. People's body shapes are different so they aren't cookie cutter and they do the best that they can. If a person was in between sizes, they would err on the side of the larger dress because it's easier to take in. They describe why they suggest the size and the final decision is always the person who orders the dress. Normally they have to sign and initial that they are okay with the size. Alterations are never free.

The problem I have with your story is that people called in their measurements. The bridal shop didn't take them. People don't always measure appropriately. This happens all.the.time. Hard to hold them responsible if' they were not in control of the most important part.

And no, bridal shops do not do anything to make people get alterations. Alterations are not even something that is very profitable to bridal shops, first of all. Second, if they made a practice of that, their vendors would take away their dress lines.

You should hear the horror stories from the shop's perspective. No one ever wants to admit they are wrong. My family had to add sound to their surveillance cameras for this reason. They are rarely wrong, but when wrong, bridal shops normally make it right. I can even say that about their competition.

My FMIL used to work in a bridal shop and she said they do that so you pay more. It's really effed up. Ill freak if my bridesmaids dresses come in too big.
