Aisle runner for outdoor ceremony?

Lisa Marie, on December 4, 2011 at 10:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

Our ceremony is going to be outside in June and I had been thinking of doing just a simple, white aisle runner - nothing elaborate. However, we met with a potential florist a couple of weeks ago and she briefly mentioned that she never does aisle runners for outdoor ceremonies since they only get messed up. Is it silly to do an aisle runner for an outdoor ceremony? I was looking at some on DB and all of the pictures are of the runner outside. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't plan to spend more than $40 on a runner and I don't care if it's useless after the wedding, but don't want to waste the money if it's going to look bad for the ceremony.

Don't do it. Use petals instead.

Another problem is that with the cheaper ones, if you are wearing heels, you can actually get hung up in the runner (especially on soft grass). I agree with Celia - do petals. I am having an outdoor wedding and plan on using them.

Petals is WAY safer... Otherwise you could stream ribbon along the edges and anchor it with tent pegs....

One other decoration you might try - buy shepherd's hooks and hang kissing balls from them or drape tulle between them to line both sides of your outdoor aisle. The best price I've seen is by save-on-crafts. You can get a huge roll of tulle in any color you want on eBay. Let me know if you would like the seller's URL.

I am having an outdoor ceremony, but It will be on a courtyard so I won't be walking on grass... I have an aisle runner and I strongly believe it will be fine... Will you be walking on grass??? If you are then I agree with the other ladies get petals.... @ linda I bought the white shepherd's hooks from save-on-crafts also but inspect them because two out of eight of my hooks were damaged...

What's under it? Bumpy grass? Flagstones? Concrete? I wouldn't worry about it getting messy after you walk on it (keep your guests off, though), as much as creating a trip hazard. Any kind of fabric over grass, etc., would be tough to walk on.

I'm having an outdoor ceremony and have actually entertained getting some pieces of dance floor to put over the grass to walk on in the aisle so I can wear heels. Party stores usually sell them by the square foot.

I'm in the same boat. After sinking in to damp ground at my cousins wedding several years ago, I don't want to have the same thing happen. I was actually looking in to some scrap industrial carpet to put down under a runner til I saw the idea of dance floor panels.

    @Yardiegirl

I might look in to that myself, hadn't thought of it but it's a great idea!

We are having our ceremony outside on the beach. Instead of an aisle runner we will be putting flower pedals down the aisle instead. Looks just as good!

I'm not crazy about aisle runners anywhere, frankly. On slippery granite or wood, they are a hazard. On stones, grass, mulch or pavers, they're worse. You could do an astroturf runner, which is a little sturdier than real grass, but I say stick with petals or shells and call it a day.

Aside from whatever is under an aisle runner, you gotta consider the wind when it's outdoors. Every. Single. Time. I've seen an aisle runner outdoors, it's been extremely difficult to put down, even with tent pegs to secure it or whatever you use. Srsly don't bother. Petals are way more elegant and appropriate for outdoor weddings IMO.

We're having an outside wedding. I'm doing a little different aisle runner. It will run both sides of the aisle, so no worries in slipping, getting snagged, etc. Just an idea! =)

I am so sad to hear all the cons about aisle runners. I had no idea. I am getting married on a terrace and here is a pic from the venue coordinator of a wedding done on the terrace. Now I am still debating.....

If you're going to be on that terrace, on concrete, then you should be fine with an aisle runner. Just find a way to anchor the edgers or corners, so the wind doesn't blow it. Runners don't work on grass because it won't lay straight, and gets easily caught up on shoes.

For walking on grass in heels, I plan on getting some of these- http://thesolemates.com/

I second......Runner on outdoor ceremony can be dangerous.....You can trip on it....It would be safer if you use heavy petals in stead of runner........You can have scattered leaves also........It would be safe......

We didn't think it would be safe for our outdoor June wedding so we are using petals. Anyone can trip on their heel or get caught in it. It may not lay flat either if it's on grass. I know that would annoy me if I saw it like that.

I'm looking for wedge style shoes to walk in the grass and be comfortable for the day.
