Air Brush v. Regular Make Up - Thoughts?

Carole M (a.k.a "old tart"), on May 22, 2012 at 1:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

Cate and I had our airbrush trials by DylanMichaels cosmetics. Casey did an amazing job. However, I found out that because the airbrush was water based, it was not waterproof. I was surprised by this.

Cate loved her airbrush. I felt it showed my pores and imperfections. I am going to have a regular make-up trial in June.

I just wanted your thoughts on both types. I can't believe water based can be cried off. ???

Darn... I was just thinking about looking into airbrush since apparently it's the hot thing to do.. and leaves a "flawless" look.. but if it's not waterproof.. I don't know. I will be crying my eyes out.. I just know it. Especially the father daughter dance.

Leena, The sobbing factor was precisely why I was going for it. Our artist explained that silicone based stays on, but they prefer not to use that kind because they feel it makes the face look too matte. ???

Also, none of the eye make-up or blush were airbrush either. I don't know why I thought it would be as well. I guess I am just plain old stupid on the topic.

I read an article that said Laura Gellar's Spackle is an amazing primer. It hides imperfections.

I do know that Model In A Bottle will keep the tears off. Many artists use that.

Hmm, I had airbrush air makeup done for some photos a while back. It's designed to last for 12 hours and it looked great all day. It wasn't my wedding day, so I didn't do any crying, but the makeup artist says it lasts, and so far, all of her clients have been happy with it.

I think you should talk to another makeup artist if you want airbrush. Imo, it looks better.

Good to know Carole, seriously.. I thought the other stuff was airbrushed as well! HAH! Looks like I'm in the stupid house with you Smiley winking So it's only the foundation and all that other jazz? I don't wear any foundation.. only heavy eye make-up, light blush, and nothing on the lips.

Amy - great advice! Thanks gal! Maybe I should just go and see MAC and see if I can hire one of the girls there to do it..

I had regular and absolutely loved it. I did cry a lot though and nothing really ran.

I use a waterbased airbrush foundation on all my brides and it is most definitely waterproof. It depends on the brand of makeup. I also use a waterproof sealer for added staying power. It's a sealer that is designed for underwater use on special effects makeup and photoshoots.

Perhaps the brand of foundation was not a professional quality. Do you know which brand of makeup it was?

And actually, silicone makeup does NOT appear matte but appears dewey. Waterbased will provide a matte foundation. I am confused as to why your makeup artist is stating the opposite.

All makeup may be airbrushed, including eyes, lips, cheeks, etc. Not every artist does it.

I had both. Water based for my trial and silicone based for my wedding. I loved both!! Honestly I went to a waterpark for my bach party they same day I had my trial and it lasted through the waterpark. I was scrubbing makeup off my face at 4am. Same thing with the silicone though, I had a pool in my hotel room after the wedding and the makeup stayed on until I removed it. (I was also sweating all day because the wedding was outside and it was in the high 80's) I never felt like I was wearing makeup (except the mascara that was kinda bugging me but that doesn't count lol). Obviously not everyone is gonna have the same experiences I did but I do recommend it because I loved it. Whatever you feel more comfortable with though!! Smiley smile

Since the beginning I wanted to try airbrush makeup so I did a trial. Well I definitely did not like the way it looked on me. . I have no acne but I have delicate skin. So I wasn't going for a full heavy coverage. The airbrush makeup just didn't look natural on me. I think it depends on the makeup used and your skin. It didn't work for me at all

So I ended up doing my own makeup. Which I loved!! It looked natural, smooth and lasted the whole day. I used the Makeup Forever Hd, Makeup Forever Primer and finished it with the setting spray, All Nighter by Urban Decay. People still ask me where did I get my makeup done for my wedding day!! So yes I do recommend getting a trial for both types of makeup but I personally will always stick to my traditional makeup.

The salon we are using uses only bare mineral makeup for foundation. Then they use other brands of eye/lip products. I have my trial set for July.

Airbrush makeup should never, ever look or feel cakey. If it does, then it wasn't applied correctly. Airbrush is designed to go on in a sheer layer with buildable coverage. I have heard that consumer brand airbrush foundation (such as Dinair or Luminess) tend to be thicker and heavier feeling.

Airbrush is the way to go! It is smudge proof, waterproof, and it lasts about 18 hours with no touch ups necessary.

Stephanie, and all of the other ladies, I truly appreciate your input on this one. I guess I have a lot more questions to ask. The artist is highly rated here and on that other site. ; ) The bride(Cate) was happy with her make-up. Perhaps airbrush is not the way for mature(a.k.a. old tart) skin. In the defense of the artist though, I could have confused the two in the explanation of the difference, but I am 99% certain I didn't because I brought a pic of my wedding make-up that I did myself which gave me a more youthful and dewey appearance, and that is when she said something about the water based foundation. I also discussed the crying and she said they will teach me how to cry. So, I think I have some emailing to do today before I go for another trial. of regular make-up.

I had airbrush and it lasted like 13 hours. by the time we were ready to go to sleep, I had to seriously scrub it off with soap and water lol. I cried, nothing ran so I'm not sure what your MUA uses to say it runs. It held a heck of a lot better (for me) than regular make up so I'm glad I did it.

    THanks Mrs. Clark!

Sorry, if I sound like I am defending my artist. I just dont want to put words in her mouth. : ) She did use the word, "run". She just said it was not waterproof. The mascara and lashes are waterproof, however, the eyeliner ran. I had to fix it later on in the day, and I wasn't crying, just sweating. : )

My issue is getting air-brush is expensive, I would hate to waste the money, if the end result means my blush will have tear streaks. lolol I can have tear streaks doing my own make-up.

I absolutely *loved* the airbrush makeup trial that I had with my makeup artist. It felt like nothing was on my face at all. And it really did just give a glow to my face.

I personally do not charge more for airbrush makeup. In fact, I primarily only do airbrush unless someone is dead set against it.

I use a professional grade makeup sealer on top of the finished face for added durability. The sealer is designed to keep makeup in place for underwater photoshoots and special effects makeup.

Silicone in silicone based makeup allows the formula to glide across the skin and it will have an outward dewey appearance where as water-based is going to be matte. Perhaps you could ask what brand of makeup the artist is using.

Mature skin should definitely opt for airbrush makeup to smooth out the skin tone and conceal any minor flaws. The brand of airbrush makeup I use is water based but works exceptionally well on mature skin and remains in place through sweat, rain, tears, etc.

FYI: There are waterproof eyeliners and lipliners available that are smudge proof, sweat proof, smear proof, fade proof, etc.

I was having a serious issue with this also!! I booked a place to do hair and makeup and they do both airbrush and regular (they call it their "signature technique") I had planned on getting airbrush since that seems to be the thing to do for weddings but she told me that they don't like doing airbrush because their signature technique is much better. She was totally upselling herself by telling me she was trained by J Lo and Kim Kardashian's makeup artists. I'm still going to get a trial with both to see what I like better. I'm afraid I'll look shiny if I don't get airbrush. She also said "real makeup artists don't use airbrush and celebrities never use airbrush either" These were HER words not mine!! I thought it was kind of snotty of her to say but the pictures on her website of the girls makeup were so beautiful and her reviews are so good I guess I just have to trust her.
