Afternoon reception - beer and wine

jane, on October 15, 2014 at 11:12 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

We are having a luncheon. Is beer and wine fine or should we have a full bar? We have a lot of family who don't drink so we don't want to do a bar package so we would pay per drink. My friend said her bar bill was inflated because the bartender upgraded every drink to the premium liquor even if the guest didn't ask and I was hoping beer/wine would keep the price down.

Any other ideas?

I think beer and wine will be fine, and maybe consider a signature cocktail. We had a full bar but for the most part people only drank beer and wine. We provided our own alcohol so I currently have about 8 handles of liquor in my house.

    What's a signature cocktail?

For a luncheon I think beer and wine is perfect, especially if you don't have a ton of drinkers. I doubt many people would want to knock back rum with their lunch! Lol.

Just one cocktail that you chose. I can be based on your wedding theme or your colors or just something that you like.

So you could have beer, wine, and (for example) pomegranate margaritas.

Thanks! I think we will stay with beer/wine and it's good to hear others don't think it's tacky. I'll ask about a drink but I don't know how they will know to charge so it might get too expensive.

Beer and wine should be fine. No one wants to get drunk at a luncheon. Unless you're an alchie.

Limited bar is perfect. You are hosting your guests completely appropriately. Put a sign that says wine and beer compliments of the bride and groom or something to that. It clarifies what is available.

ETA: Snarky, I love a good day drunk buzz, don't hate....I so badly wanted to hashtag this

Though I think beer and wine is fine. Everyone eho thinks people won't drink anything other than beer and wine (if given the option) because it's lunch is wrong. Even people who arnt "alchies" drank rum and cokes or scotch at my wedding....at noon.

I think beer and wine is fine, and since it's an afternoon you can also look into doing sparkling wine or champagne drinks (mimosa, Bellini etc.). Those are my go-to brunch beverages, so I think those would be great for a lunch-time affair.

@Snarky- don't judge that I have favorite brunch beverages.... I swear I am not an alcoholic.

We just went to a wedding over the weekend with a limited bar of wine and beer. It was fine! Nobody was unhappy with it. Only recommendation I would make is to have at least one beer that is a crowd pleaser. I love craft brews but the wedding we went to only had craft beers and a lot of the older guests were looking for a more standard beer like Yuengling.

I wouldn't expect a full bar at a luncheon. Beer and Wine is perfect!

    I'm not familiar with Yuengling.

We will have 8 beers to choose from as well as 4 types of wine. I'm in Chicago so we are going to do a combination of Miller, Goose Island and Lagunitas. Neither of us are wine drinkers so we are going to have the banquet manager decide. The luncheon includes a champagne toast.

I'm going to ask about the cost and options of a signature drink.

Beer & wine is fine. I'm not a fan of signature drinks, personally. I would prefer limited hard alcohol so I could decide my own cocktail but then again, I don't drink cocktails anyway. LOL

I think beer and wine is fine. Mimosa's would be nice too if you can afford to throw that in.

I am having beer and wine only. Neither of us have drinkers in the family and my FH is a beer drinker.

I think beer & wine only sounds great!

I would just make sure your selection includes both dry & sweet wines.
