Adding straps to my gown

Stephanie, on December 6, 2012 at 11:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I recently bought my wedding dress and it is strapless. I am adding straps to it because I am very self conscious about not having them. Just looking for suggestions on what would look with my dress. Here is a picture of the front and back of my dress. The only difference is that everything is white.

Hi if you wanted to add straps you could do them with lace covered but I would try to match the lace as close as I could, is there a color sash around the waist and also a color panel in the back of the dress... if your dress is fitted right you wouldn't necessary need straps...it's a very pretty dress..good choice!

Thank you! I'm in love with it but I'm just so self conscious about how naked I feel without straps. The colored area in the pictures are actually all white in my dress. I chose not to put any color besides white in the dress. Thanks for the suggestion!

You could also do a bolero lace jacket or shrug...I got a nice satin with fur trim to wear with my dress when it gets cool as we are gonna do some outside photos after dark in down town Chicago... there is a lot of possibilities to do to make you feel comfortable in your dress....

Like Jackie C. said, I think a bolero would look lovely. But I'm not sure if you're gonna want to wear it all night while dancing. I was thinking some nice lace cap sleeves.

What do you think about that?

Have you talked to the store you bought it from? There were a couple dresses I tried on and thought it would look better for straps. They should have options for you. They also will be able to normally get the same fabric for them if you want that. You can easily add straps to a strapless gown though. If you want spaghetti straps or a few of them gathered at the shoulder and criss-crossing in the back for something more fancy too.

If you have alterations done, you can use the left over material if there is any, to make straps. That is what i did. My dress is orginally strapless but I wanted straps for the same reasons.

We used a belt in the store and tried different looks. For me, the halter strap looked the best.

My actual straps were made from material of the dress plus we ordered extra Appliques and applied them. The appliques match those on the dress.

Thanks Ladies! I was going to talk to the store when I went to pick it up. I just ordered it in October and was trying to get ideas for when I went back in. I like the idea of a jacket but then knowing me, I would want to keep it on the whole reception which is why I thought some sort of sleeve would be better. When I was trying on the dress my consultant put the cap sleeves to show me but I've heard a lot of people say its hard to dance with them. I'm really like the idea of using material from the dress. I know there will be a bunch to use because I've already lost 42lbs since I got engaged and plan on at least another 40lbs before I get married. :-)

Thanks for all your suggestions ladies!! Congratulations to you!

I dont think adding straps to the dress will look bad as long as you can try and make them match the pattern and material of the dress

I agree also with the suggestions from the other ladies, as long as you can incorporate it from the material from the original dress no one will ever know whether you do a lace jacket, lace sleeves, or straps or halter, talk to your seamstress and suggest the ideas you like and feel comfortable with...congratulations on getting engaged and losing weight..you go girl!!! Good Luck...

Such a gorgeous dress!! I would definitely talk with a seamstress and see her thoughts on what straps could be done, she'll have the best insight with the dress & fabric. I like Jackie's suggestion of a bolero, they can be so pretty especially in lace Smiley smile

Mrs Jaclyn Smiley laugh I LOVE the idea! My mother did that for my sister in law, sort of. Jennette bought a dress from a friend who was susbtantially larger... not to mention she got married in the 80s and let me just say.... Momma pulled AT LEAST 20 yards of netting out of BUSTLES in that dress!!! Smiley surprise one on the butt and one on each hip! She also tore out the big cream puff sleeves and took the stays out of these big... fin looking things coming up from the shoulders, and made sleeves!

Stephanie I feel the same way. I am adding straps to my gown too. My dress has lace, and the bridal consultant pulled out lace straps that matched exactly, so I order a set. Does your salon have samples you can look at? Try to match color and it style as best you can
