Adding Nerdy Touches to the Wedding

Caylin C., on August 17, 2014 at 10:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 33

I was wondering if anyone was adding nerdy touches to their wedding without doing a full on nerdy theme. FH and I are pretty big nerds. We go to conventions and play Magic the Gathering and all kinds of nerdy stuff. However, I don't want to have an overtly nerdy wedding. I think it would be nice to add some small nerdy touches though. My question is how do you do that without them looking random or weird in an otherwise traditional wedding?

EDIT: I should have stated incorporating anything into my ceremony is not an option as I'm being married in a Catholic church.

I know some people incorporate nerdy themes into their ceremony music.

You can also scatter little charms or pictures for decoration.

Some people go all out nerdy on the wedding cake.

Is there specific nerdy things you want to incorporate?

I'm having a Catholic ceremony so I definitely can't incorporate anything into the ceremony. I was thinking along the lines of Game of Thrones themed table numbers and maybe using some nerdy signs in different places.

We got introduced into the reception to The Imperial Death March (Darth Vader theme). H even acted like he was using the force on the best man.....sooo yeah. That's who I married...

Processional music won't work, but maybe you could use the theme to Game of Thrones for your entrance into the reception, or for the cake cutting?

I think it would be SO COOL to use the different house names for your table "numbers" instead of actual numbers. You could print the different sigils, and put them in frames-- that would be sooo awesome!!

Maybe you could have a nerdy card box? I've seen tardis', the chest from Legend of Zelda, the boxes from mario . ..

Your favors/escort cards are another good place to personalize. . .

I think as long as they're small, and you're not consistently using the same thing (like, using JUST stuff from GoT), then it won't look like you're trying to make that your theme.

@Barbara, that's pretty much what I was thinking of doing for table numbers except with the seven kingdoms since we won't have nine tables.

You all have great ideas. Maybe my OCD is just going into overdrive thinking small touches will look random lol. I guess they'll look completely normal since everyone knows we're nerds!

I'm making Lego bouttineres for FH and the groomsmen. I'm making our card box out of Legos. Our cake topper is also Legos. I'm quoting Dr. Suess in my vows, and maybe Game of Thrones. I'm trying to find a way to incorporate more nerdy things, because we're huge nerds, but I don't know what yet.

You can totally make it look nerdy without overwhelmingly disorganized. Our wedding is inspired by the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, MTG, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, etc etc etc lol. FH wanted to bring all these elements in, the challenge was to do so in a tasteful way. We are using music from the movies in the ceremony and during dinner and cocktail hour. The boutonnieres have the Elven brooch on them. Our centerpieces are inspired by the LotR hobbit homes. Our cake topper are characters from the Game of Thrones. Think about a few specific areas that you would want to incorporate some nerdy/geeky items into and focus on that.

We have a rustic theme, but we have a few nerdy touches here and there. I got a cake topper that says, "To infinity and beyond." We also plan to have our guest book be a replica of the my adventure book from Up, except it will say, "Our Wedding Book." And we will probably have some kind of nod to Wall-E as well. We are pretty big pixar fans.

@Jecca, we also want to get Always engraved on ours because it's our song. But I want to see if FH would be okay with having his say "After all this time" and mine say "Always". It's nice because it's a nerdy reference for us and also because we've known each other for 14 years and been through so much, but will always love each other.

ETA: I also got him an iPad as an engagement present that says Always so I think it would be nice for his wedding band to say something different.

I made a thread about this a while back. Lots of ideas there from my own wedding and many other ladies here.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of threads about ideas and I pretty much know the things I want to do. I just wanted to know if it would look random at a traditional wedding.

I think personal quirky touches are stellar! I put hawaiian quotes on our favors, and had the DJ play a number of hawaiian songs during dinner, but we didnt have a cake, so a cake topper would have been something i would have done funky, and the table "numbers" were not numbers either

We're getting married on may 4th, "may the fourth be with you" and fh will have a silver lightsaber tie clip. that's it so far, cuz I didn't want to have a "star wars wedding". I want a romantic garden wedding, but its fh's wedding too. He's happy that I thought to add those details, if I can find some more that aren't too out there, I will incorporate them as well.

We had Star Wars boutonnieres and the guys walked into Star Wars music. That was about it, though, I hate Star Wars but Husband loves it. We handmade the bouts but the florist put the flowers in them.
