About to cancel over reception food. One unexpected expense after another...

Let me just say we've managed to pull together every other detail of this wedding on almost zero budget but the food is going to be what kills it. Neither of us has any desire what so ever to do a lame cake and punch reception as we have a summer night adults only wedding planned. I've hardly spent anything on my dresses, less than $100 for both my wedding and reception dress together. My flowers are being done by my grandmother. My mom and I are doing centerpieces. My aunt, mom, FH, FFIL and myself are decorating the venue with borrowed lights from family and venue is free. I got all linens second hand and will be reselling all after they are cleaned. Photography services are being gifted. Videography is being gifted by another. Photo booth is being gifted by my daughter. Ceremony is being performed by my oldest son. Middle son and daughter is preforming live music at reception and FH nephew is DJ. We have to rent tables, chairs, dance floor, bathroom trailer, pay for open bar or signature cocktail. Guest list is over 200 that's close family and friends. We were going to do a BBQ style menu which for our people and our lifestyle completely appropriate. My compromise to not shut down is for us to provide brisket, country style pork ribs and chicken and to include and insert that says something along the lines of .... You know that family, friends and food are the greatest! Please join us in the continued celebration of our love following our ceremony for a pot luck reception. We'll provide the meat and drinks! You surprise us with your best sides and pies! ( It not a contest but as always there will be games, karaoke and prizes!) *Your company and sweet smile is the only gift necessary*
I know more than half of you are going to rip me a new one with how tacky it is but why should a couple go into debt to get married when they've already been through hell and back? That whole wait until your circumstances are better thing?! This is better. 5 years ago my house was ripped away. The year after that I was nearly killed in a car accident and it took years to recover. The next year my mother had a heart attack leaving me to care for my disabled sister. I'm waiting my life away. Just when I think I'm a few months away I get TBONED by an uninsured driver and there goes part of my wedding budget. I'm tired of waiting for the right moment.

For someone who thinks offense only comes in when someone is unhappy, you seem awfully defensive.

I'm sorry, there really is no place for insulting someone trying to voice their opinion that you already insulted. Just because you medically can't do a cake and punch reception doesn't means it's lane. It's just not an option for you. Just saying.

I don't know of a single person who has to pay that much but I have exactly 7 people on my list who have children under 10 and they regularly do mom's night out at my church so I've already arranged the sitters if they want to use them. If not they can use their own but they all use these girls regularly.

Because I'm replying? What do you want me to do? Just sit back and enjoy people rip me apart and misconstrue everything I said? Sorry I tried to condense everything to much and not write a whole book. Should have just deleted it but that's not an option.

But you came on here to presumably ask for advice and you even knew how people would respond?

So what was the point?? You don't want to hear about the additional options to your day (immediate family only, small ceremony, out to dinner) then what did you want? A pat on the back? Everyone to say aww yeah you had a couple set backs you DESERVE to be thrown a party that is your own responsibility?

Everyone has set backs - Someone just backed into my car and drove off without leaving information, I'm stuck covering my deductible now - but I'm not letting it affect my hosting. And if it did - well then we would scale back. I would rather treat my immediate family well then over two dozen people crappily.

Ditto!! Where do I sign up to have hot cabana boys fanning me poolside and feeding me grapes, because that sounds LOADS better than my office! Smiley xd

And OP, take a deep breath. Nice deep breath. It's gonna be okay, really. I get you on wanting 200+ people to come celebrate your moment with you and your FH. Left to his own devices, my FH had a guest list of 175 people, without even taking a breath to stop; those were just his close friends and relatives. Adding the rest of them and he'd have been at 250 all by himself. Working with him to cut that guest list down to what will fit the venue and what we can afford has been the hardest sacrifice for him in this, but with all the bills we already pay plus footing our wedding ourselves, hosting 300 people just wasn't feasible or realistic. It was a tough conversation. It still is, and still takes some gentle pushing and pulling to compromise. But that's part of weddings, marriages, and everything - learning where you will compromise.

So first, look at what you HAVE. Your venue is free. Most brides here would LOVE to say the same, so smile and be grateful for that. That's usually the second biggest expense next to food. You're renting all your tables and chairs, and you got your linens cheap with intent to resale them. Bravo! That's being thrifty, and reselling the wedding items will be making another bride's planning easier. So, good job! Your family is already going above and beyond to help you in this, from your flowers to your lights, and your photography, videography, and photobooth are all being gifted to you. OMG. Those are huge wedding expenses, just being gifted to you. You are insanely lucky, and you must be well-loved for them to pitch in like that. I'm jealous, and I'd be thanking them every moment I can. Not saying you don't, but emphasizing gratitude shifts a lot of things in life. A lack of gratitude is the seed of discontent.

Rentals and food can get crazy expensive. Boy, I get you there. I do. Our wedding budget is a handful of twine, some popsicle sticks, and a few dollars. We're having to compromise and cut things everywhere we can to make it all work. It's not fun, but that's what must be done. But food is something that shows you are grateful to your guests for coming, for supporting you, for being there. It's you showing your appreciation. I'll admit I've gone to one pot luck reception that turned out well; there were a grand total of thirty guests, and the pot luck was hosted by the church ladies. Everyone had survived their cooking before Smiley xd But that's a far cry from 200 adults partying. So things to consider? As others have said, cutting down your guest list. That's the most painful, but it makes planning the menu so much easier. If you've already budgeted for your main meats, most of your battle is already won. So instead of asking guests to bring more sides than you'll all be able to eat (or a mountain of chips... so many pot lucks where everyone brought chips), call your local higher-end grocery stores. Their delis often have sides like mashed potatoes, pasta salad, cole slaw, etc, readymade and in their display cases. Even if those items aren't listed on their websites, go in person, and ask the deli manager for cost for making whole pans of that would be. You'd be surprised how often they're willing to work on requests like that, and it's a lot cheaper than you'd think. Other thing to cut back on might be the open bar. Instead of open bar with the works, scale it back to beer, wine, and maybe one signature cocktail. That alone will save you some cash that you can put back toward the food.

It doesn't have to be an extreme of either/or. You just have to step back and look at it from a practicality standpoint. You'd never tell your clients to go into debt or risk food poisoning, so you shouldn't tell yourself those things, either. Express your gratitude openly to the friends and family helping you in this, and who knows, they may have some alternate suggestions that could be helpful Smiley smile

Uggh... so because you've gone through a lot, you think you deserve a wedding you can obviously not afford?

You can do whatever you want. But, that doesn't change the fact that asking guests to bring a dish to your wedding is rude, tacky and dangerous.

Not sure what you want us to tell you here.

I’m kind of confused, your title says “about to cancel” but your entire post and all your comments are just you justifying why you shouldn’t cancel. And you’re not really asking a question here, so I’m not really sure what you expected...you’re getting honest feedback here, if you can’t afford to feed 200 people then cut your guest list, no one on here is going to agree with asking guests to provide food

Who did I insult? Please tell me? I didn't insult one single person. Just because I think cake and punch is lame doesn't mean I INSULTED you for having it. That's your choice. Your wedding. Your day. Your dream. You do what makes YOU happy. See I don't believe we're stuck in 1954 where there's a wedding rule book. I've married 2 women and 2 men in RELIGIOUS ceremonies because these people whole heartedly believe in GOD. Therefore it's really hard for me to believe that there is some other hard and fast rule about wedding cake that dare not be broken *gasp*! I've had rocks thrown through the windows because of the decisions I made. I stand by them. If two people want to be married, they should be. They want pizza instead of cake ok!

Just wondering, what kind of hypoglycemia do you have? All the hypoglycemics I know, sugar is necessary and can save their lives.

    A. You literally told someone she had a simple mind. That's an insult everwhere I've ever lived.

    B. No one is telling you that you have to have cake. No one is saying you haven't been through a lot (as you seem to love telling everyone). What we are saying is that it seems as though you are set on having a party that you can't afford, and that you aren't entitled to. We are saying that if you have to ask guests to bring food to feed people at your wedding, you invited too many people.

OP "cake and punch" is usually a catch all for cake and light refreshments (such as a fruit / veggie tray, finger sandwiches, cheese and crackers.) The "punch" can be unsweetened tea, diet soda, coffee...etc.

Also, you are either misinformed about hypoglycemia or you mean hyperglycemia.

Well first you insulted anyone having a cake and punch reception and then you insulted Sarah by saying she had a simple mind.

Also, you didn't insult me. I'm having a plated dinner for 200. And I don't believe there's a rule book either because it's not 1954. You are right on that. Everyone can do what they please.

Sorry i didn't read every post, so if it's already been suggested and dismissed, nevermind .... but what about appetizers instead of a full meal? I saw some very affordable options when i was considering this myself.

BTW, the reason you might be getting accusations of insulting others are posts where you've called someone simple minded or unhappy ... I i wouldn't say either are compliments.

In the end you'll do what you want, but the very few etiquette rules that most people still follow have sound reasoning behind them. I cut my guest list, chose a much less expensive venue & dress, am DIYing a lot of things, so I can still serve adult beverages & a catered meal.

Thank you, this was honestly what I needed. Not a brow beating. I'm trying to cut every corner I can and keep thinking of ways to cut more. I know we are loved and we are grateful to everyone and we go out of our way to show it and it definitely shines back on us. We have access to a lot of things other people might not because of our outgoing nature's, our family actively participating in the community and our families both having restaraunts on both sides (funny how were having food issues but they're BUSY BUSY that's where our drink discount is coming from (cost)) we do a lot of working for family on our days off when anyone needs help they know to call us or my kids and we'll be there. Keeping a family business going means you sometimes call for help if you're short handed. We get the opportunity to meet a lot of people and I like to think we're a memorable pair! We're both the kind of people who would give someone the shirt off our back and our last dime and not think twice about it.

Not when it's controlled by diet. When you have your condition under control and you have yourself in a place where you are not reactive and stable then absolutely NO you do NOT NEED sugar.

The simple minded was in response to a comment if you read it in context, I do feel it conveyed exactly how I felt about that. If she took a generalized statement as me saying it to her personally when I have no idea of her existence then she's taking things way to seriously. I didn't quote her, didn't pick her out, never saw her before, no previous post from her, yet her claim was that I called HER WEDDING RECEPTION ..... because I think cake and punch is lame. Come on, that's taking it to far. I don't know Sarah from Adam so I didn't say anything about her reception. That's ridiculous. I mean really?
