At the end of the war, Ocean City officials decided to subsidize the construction of a luxury hotel, hoping it would encourage tourism, just as the Blenheim Hotel did for Atlantic City at the time. Local business owners were appointed to the Ocean Front Hotel Corporation (OFHC), a committee tasked to vet and plan the project. After careful consideration, the committee hired architect Vivian B. Smith to construct the building. Smith chose tile roofing, steel girders, and concrete to ensure the hotel would be “fireproof,” which would make it far more appealing to guests during that time. These building materials saved the Flanders Hotel from the great fire of 1927, where many other historic buildings burned to the ground. The OFHC named the hotel “The Flanders,” in honor of fallen troops who fought in WWI’s “Battle of Flanders” in 1914. It opened in 1923, and has been known as “The Jewel of the Southern Jersey Shore” ever since.
