About
The Palmer Opera House, built in 1867 by Joseph Palmer. The Palmer Opera House stands at 12 W Main St Cuba, New York. Formerly housed three commercial store bays on street level and a community opera house on the second floor. The original structure was destroyed by fire on December 20, 1871.
Early the following year, on January 5, 1872, Palmer said he "planned to created one of the largest and best opera houses and halls in Western New York for efforts made by the firemen and citizens." He fulfilled the promise, holding the largest party ever held in Cuba on February 1874. For over 70 years, the restored opera house hosted a wide variety of cultural and recreational events, including operas, minstrel shows, theater, and vaudeville shows.
Severely damaged in the winter of 2001, when one of the roof beams upstairs fell, the opera house lay exposed to the outside elements for years. Extensive rehabilitation efforts began on the property in 2006, restoring the Palmer Block and reopening the Palmer Opera House.
As a Historical Landmark, The Palmer Opera House has been restored to a different historical period then most may remember.
