Brought my wedding dress to life!

I would like to say thank you to Smart Dress Making! They took my wedding dress & made it my dream come true. I already loved my dress from the start, but they were able to make the small adjustments that made me feel like an absolute princess. Thank you to the ladies of Smart Dress Making!

I made an appointment with Jenny at Smart Dressmaking with the recommendation of fellow Yelpers. I was a little worried because I needed my wedding dress altered. It's such a big investment and a day where everyone's eyes are on you, I needed to feel confident with whoever took on this job. My mom is a sewer and she did not want to take on such a job, my dress was a ballgown style with 9 layers and a long train. It was a tough project!!

I went in and the shop is small, there's 2 or 3 dressing rooms but Jenny greets her customers like she's your super sweet Aunt. She is so nice but will also tell you straight up what she thinks of you in the dress and what changes she recommends. I think after leaving my dress with Jenny, I had 2 or 3 more fittings before I took the dress home. Jenny and her team is QUICK! There were extra fittings because I had little alterations I asked for each time and every time I came back, the dress felt more and more like me.

The whole job was a little more expensive that I wanted to pay, but her work was AMAZING, totally worth it. (She put in a bustle, took out the right side of the dress, and hemmed it to perfect length with my heels) I got so many compliments on my dress on the day of!! Thank you so much, Jenny!

After finding this shop on Yelp and using them for a bridesmaid dress alteration awhile back, I got my wedding dress alterations done by Ann, a little woman that (I presume) owns this shop.

For the bridesmaid dress, she added boning to a cheap strapless dress to help it stand on its own and not slink down during the wedding. The quality was great and it cost about $20.

I heard she had good prices on wedding dress alterations too, so this is where I brought my dress -- a sweetheart Oleg Cassini CRL277 lace mermaid dress with scalloped hemline. The entire process was super easy and I consider the price a great value compared to what bridal studios charge.

I went in and she pinned me up from head to toe, bringing in the bust, hips, thighs (to keep the mermaid shape) and length. For the hem, she had to remove the lace scallop, chop off about 6 inches of dress, and reattach the scallop. She also added a three-point bustle. The final result fit me well and cost just $150.

CON: I went in two weeks after the first fitting to try on the dress, when she told me to, for the second fitting. But the dress wasn't ready yet! Luckily I live close by and it wasn't too much out of my way. I went in again a couple days later and the dress was ready and good enough for me to take home that day.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to a friend because of the great prices. Just call before picking up your dress to make sure it's ready.

Avoid at All Costs

I was so disappointed and even cried twice in this place while trying to have my wedding dress altered. There were so many great reviews for this seamstress, so I was excited and willing to work with her thinking I was getting the best service. However, after 3 months, 7 visits, and a week before my wedding, my dress was nowhere near able to be worn. Nothing was done - and I had just asked for simple changes, nothing big. She didn't do anything I asked, and the dress ended up being overcut and over altered, and she ended up charging me double. When I would address these things she would gaslight me and claim she had no idea what I was talking about.

I ended up taking my dress to another seamstress who was an angel sent from above and saved my dress to be wearable and look nice on me for my wedding day. She also charged a fraction of what Smart Dressmaking did!

The woman at Smart Dressmaking is awful. She was rude to me and is incredibly harsh when she talks. When my husband went in after the wedding to try and receive some kind of refund, she claimed everything was my fault and that she never charged me as much she did and that I must have been confused - even though I have the receipts and we showed her! I'm sure her work is good on other items, but I would really recommend with wedding dresses, that you save yourself the heartache and go somewhere else - I would recommend Grace Clothing and Alterations in Rolling Hills. Their work is amazing and she is the kindest woman ever there!

BUT AVOID SMART DRESSMAKING - there is a high possibility that you will be overcharged, gaslighted, talked down to, and disappointed at the end.

Bridal Alterations

I went to Jenny because of all these glowing reviews of her work on wedding dresses. I thought her prices were reasonable since she was the best I had been quoted at that point (this becomes more relevant later). I brought her both my ceremony and reception gown. She spent about 30 minutes taking a look at both dresses before writing up her list of suggested alterations on a scrap piece of paper. Although she did a great job hemming and bustling my reception gown, what she did to my ceremony gown was absolutely heartbreaking.

My ceremony gown was purchased at a sample sale, so there was a lot of minor issues that eventually added up to my already overwhelming sense of anxiety. Jenny took a look at my gown and reassured me that she would make it beautiful again. She quoted me $750 on added buttons, redoing the loops to the buttons, replacing the hook & eye as well as the zipper, and hem. She didn't pin anything on the gown, so I just had to trust her word - she did a great job on my reception dress after all. Jenny asked me if I wanted to bustle my ceremony dress since the train was so long. I told her not to since that's why I got a reception gown. Her response was "okay, I'll hem it to 6 inches." She told me she would take half of the total cost at this point then the rest at the first or second fitting.

When I came to the first fitting, my train was gone and I was in absolute shock. I asked her what happened to my train and Jenny told me that she cut the train to be only 6 inches from the back of my heel. I acknowledge that I had signed that scrap piece of paper as my approval of her alterations, but Jenny did not show me exactly what she meant. If I had known "hem to 6 inches" meant to hack off my train, then I wouldn't have agreed to it!

I'm in shock which then turned into sadness that my gorgeous train was gone. Jenny tried to reassure me that she could reattach what was left of the train and make it look seamless. As an after thought, she explained that she had to cut the train so that she could use the lace appliques to patch up the tears in the back. I would have understood that explanation if she had said so at our first meeting, but she had made no mention of that. I shouldn't have but I still trusted her to fix this, so I paid her the other half of the total cost.

I went to the second fitting about 3 weeks later where Jenny had reattached about 12 inches of the train - with a sloppy attempt of covering up the reattached seam with somewhat similar lace appliques. I was so upset that I just took my dress back as it was and asked for some sort of refund. Jenny looked me straight in the eye and asked if it was fair for her to take the blame for this mistake. I took the dress to another seamstress where we come to find that the zipper had not been replaced (it busted as soon as I tried it back on despite me not gaining or losing any weight), the buttons had not been replaced, the hemline was a hack job and would have been too short if Jenny had tidied it up, and the train was crooked which made it longer on one side.

Jenny had told me she would send me a check with my refund once she evaluated how much work had been put into my gown. Two weeks go by since my second fitting with Jenny, I had to text her to ask about my refund. She sends me check for $200. I argued with Jenny for over a month about why she believes the "work" she had put into my gown was worth $550. Her only response before completely ignoring me was that I took my dress back before she could finish it.
