About
Sara Gast has been designing exquisite floral designs for weddings, special events, and everyday pleasure for almost 20 years. Starting with a position as floral designer for the renowned Mohonk Mountain House in 1985, she has grown her business to serve satisfied clients throughout the Hudson Valley and down to New York City. The creativity and quality of her eye has been recognized in articles in Bridal Guide, Wellwed in New York and Hudson Valley Magazine.
She earned her Bachelors in Fine Arts Degree in 1978 as a potter and became an ardent gardener. Along the way, she found her love of flowers was her way to create art , and she began her work at the nursery at Mohonk. In 1987 she won Best In Show at the International Flower Show in Albany, which earned her a trip to Holland. It was at the flower markets in Holland that she developed connections that to this day are the source of many of the blooms found in her work.
Sara’s cutting gardens on the three lushly landscaped acres in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains where she lives and works with her husband, a ceramicist, her daughter and two beloved dogs, supplement fresh blooms from the wholesale flower market in New York City and help to set her designs apart. Her aesthetic is most often described asGarden Style — arrangements that look as though they are natural, as if growing in the garden, loose and open, not contrived.
From the first contact, Sara loves to work with each couple to create their own unique wedding or event . After listening carefully, she personally hand -picks the freshest blooms in the New York City flower market and from her garden, and arranges them to respond to her clients’special occasion. In a floral design industry that has become increasingly commercial, Sara offers, in contrast, an all-encompassing attention to detail for every event, large or small. She relishes the challenge of responding creatively to her clients’ desires, creating beautiful and lush, or spare arrangements. Come visit her studio and see the versatility of her work.
Sara’s floral arrangements have enriched special events at the Inn at Buttermilk Falls, Milton; Vassar Alumnae House, Poughkeepsie; Onteora Mountain House, Boiceville; and, Belvedere Mansion, Rhinebeck and numerous other venues. Sara especially loves working with couples in outside settings — gardens, meadows, parks and private residences.
While weddings are what Sara does most often, her work also includes corporate events, parties, bar and bat mitzvahs.
